“Tatooine” Tune Has Strong Influence on the Geek-Minded

| October 6, 2010

Boingboing updates today with a catchy little ditty called “Tatooine” by Jeremy Messersmith — a short two-and-a-half-minute piece which recounts the entire original trilogy in a Paul Simon-like song illustrated with paper cut-out animation.

Be warned — you might find yourself whistling this one all afternoon.

Check it out here.

UPDATE: Wired has just posted an interview with Messersmith that you can read here.

Star Wars Shout Outs in “G33k & G4M3R Girls” Music Video Team | September 10, 2010

Move over fellas, the geek gals & gamer girls are in the house! The ladies of the award-winning Star Wars fan film Saber are back with a few of their friends including actor Seth Green, comics legend Stan Lee and Starbuck herself Katee Sackhoff — in a music video to celebrate geek girls everywhere.

“G33k & G4M3R Girls” — sung to the same tune as the hit song “California Girls” by Katy Perry — features Team Unicorn which includes actresses Michele Boyd (The Guild, How I Met Your Mother, Cold Case, Sons of Anarchy), Clare Grant (Walk the Line, $5 Cover, Black Snake Moan, Saber), Milynn Sarley (EA, TheGamerChick, LTA, Street Fighter High School), Rileah Vanderbilt (Hatchet, Frozen, Saber), and actor Seth Green (Robot Chicken, Family Guy) remind us all why geek girls rule!

There’s plenty of shout outs to Star Wars, Doctor Who, Marvel comics, Halo and more!

WATCH VIDEO: “G33k & G4M3R Girls Song” chats with the ladies of Team Unicorn (they answer as a single unit cause that’s how they roll) about their awesome music tribute to geek goddesses everywhere!

(Milynn Sarley as Psylocke, Clare Grant as Lara Croft, Rileah Vanderbilt as The Baroness and Michele Boyd as Han Solo)Why did you decide to do such an awesome remake of Katy Perry’s song “California Girls” but as “Geeks and Gamers?”

We’d all become friends because of our shared love for geeky stuff and bonded even more cosplaying as Sailor Scouts during Comic-Con this year. Milynn, Rileah and Michele actually all play in the same guild in World of Warcraft!

Milynn and Michele were on the way back from the beach when they started singing along to the Katy Perry song and had the idea for the parody! We all know geekery the best, so it seemed a natural idea for the new version. They started coming up with lyrics in the car and then got Rileah and Clare involved, and it all snowballed from there!

Steve Jobs Lightsaber Battle in Antennagate! Team | July 19, 2010

Apple founder Steve Jobs has been busy defending the iPhone 4, which has been mired in problems since before its launch. The latest scandal to crop up, dubbed “Antennagate,” is so-named because the phone’s antenna gets poor reception if the phone is held the wrong way.

Check out this awesome animation from NMANews explain Antennagate, while showing an epic lightsaber battle between Steve Jobs and Microsoft’s Bill Gates. Jobs also has some rather impressive Force lightning skills.

Improv Everywhere: Star Wars Subway Car Team | July 14, 2010

Star Wars is everywhere so it was only a matter of time before Improv Everywhere took their own stab at bringing their favorite scenes to the masses. Since 2001, Improv Everywhere has entertained the public at random in New York City. Some of their 100 improv stunts include Frozen Grand Central, the Food Court Musical, and the famous No Pants Subway Ride, and now Star Wars Subway.

For their latest mission, the group staged a reenactment of the first Princess Leia and Darth Vader scene from Star Wars on a New York City subway car.

The white walls and sliding doors on the train reminded us of the Rebel ship from the movie, and we thought it would be fun to see how people would react to a surprise appearance by the iconic characters. We spread out the actors along the train line, staging it so they would enter the right car at the right time.

The people on the train went crazy for Vader. I think they thought the joke was over once the Stormtroopers got on, but Vader just topped it so well. One thing we learned is that almost every human will immediately take out their camera when they see Darth Vader. We’ve done lots of crazy missions on the subway over the years, but I have never seen so many people taking photographs of our performance. How can you not take a photo of Darth Vader? It’s impossible to resist!

The Ultimate R2-D2 College Prank Team | June 2, 2010

Now THAT’S the droid we’re looking for! Granted, it is hard to miss.

Carleton’s Goodsell Observatory gets turned into R2-D2 by an unknown group of enterprising students — complete with sound effects. All the “decorations” appear to have been draped or taped onto the dome; there was no defacing with spray paint, etc.
