From Han to Thrawn: Celebrating the Force-Free Characters of Star Wars

Star Wars: Legacy Vol. 2 - Prisoner of the Floating World

In an earlier blog post I pointed to our new Legacy comic book series as an example of a story that I believe has all the classic elements of Star Wars. But there’s something else that I love about the series, too, that I didn’t mention at the time: the main protagonist, Ania Solo, is not a Force user.

Don’t get me wrong, the Force is an integral part of the Star Wars mythos, and I like the Jedi as much as anyone. But there’s an important role to be played in the galaxy far, far away by regular folks who get by without the help of mysterious powers. Not just because those characters bring their own set of skills to the table, but because they are the characters it’s often easier for us to relate to.

So What the Heck Are Midi-Chlorians?

J.W. Rinzler | June 24, 2013

When Episode I came out a few people were upset by the role midi-chlorians played in the Force — particularly when a drop of Anakin’s blood revealed an unusually high number of them in his system. As Lucas explained in a talk with author Terry Brooks, who was about to start writing the novelization of the film, “In Anakin’s case, there are, instead of one or two or three midi-chlorians in each cell, there’s like a thousand. It’s unbelievable how many midi-chlorians are in there.”

So…what are they? Lucas expounded: “I’m assuming that the midi-chlorians are a race that everybody knows about [in the world of Star Wars]. The way you interact and interface with this larger energy field [the Force] is through the midi-chlorians, which are sensitive to the energy. They are at the core of your life, which is the cell, the living cell. They are in a symbiotic relationship with the cell. And then, because they’re all interconnected as one, they can communicate with the larger Force field. That’s how you deal with the Force.”

Star Wars fans love to eat. Or, at least it looks like it, according to all these pizza slices, green pea piles, and whipped dessert toppings found in the scenes submitted for The Empire Strikes Back Uncut.

The Empire Strikes Back‘s many planets give fans ample reason to dig into their scene-setting skills: Hoth, Cloud City, that pesky space slug. As more people are re-imagining scenes for The Empire Strikes Back Uncut, it’s pretty clear that a lot of people paint in a palette of awesome-looking food groups.
