The Best Holidays and Celebrations in the Galaxy…and Empire Day, Too

Coruscant celebration from Return of the Jedi

It’s not because the word “wars” can be found in the saga’s title that the people of the galaxy never made time for a proper holiday or celebration. Holidays were a part of everyday life to the average Barada or Wedge, if they were lucky enough to live in freedom or on a planet where government didn’t suppress celebrations. But then again, even the Hutts gave their slaves a holiday that “rewarded” their servants with festivities.

The heroes of the saga took part in several celebrations that happened after important victories over the forces of evil. When the Trade Federation was defeated, Queen Amidala handed Boss Rugor Nass the Globe of Peace in the city of Theed, and united the Gungans and the Naboo after many years of uneasy relationships. After the destruction of the Death Star Princess Leia Organa bestowed Luke Skywalker and Han Solo, the new poster boys of the Rebel Alliance, with Medals of Bravery (which was later also given to Chewbacca). The biggest celebration probably took place after the second Death Star had been destroyed and Emperor Palpatine had been killed. Not just on Endor, but throughout the galaxy, supporters of the Rebel Alliance and the ideals of the Republic and democracy, cheered, danced, and toppled statues.

When it Comes to Christmas Music, Is There Anything Better Than Christmas in the Stars? (Trick Question!)

Christmas in the Stars 1980 LP cover

What can you get a Wookiee for Christmas when he already owns a comb? No, not a hairbrush. And if you don’t immediately get what I’m talking about, you’re probably not as much of a Star Wars trivia expert as you think.

Actually, despite the festiveness of the season, I’m perturbed. I’ve heard “Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer” at least four or five times on the radio already, but not once have I heard “R2-D2 We Wish You a Merry Christmas.” And what about “The Odds Against Christmas?” Those, along with “What Can You Get a Wookiee…” are three of the nine tunes on Christmas in the Stars: The Star Wars Christmas Album, which originally came out as an LP (remember vinyl records?) in 1980 from RSO Records — and fairly quickly went out of print.

The Star Wars Holiday Special Cantina: Who’s Who

Bea Arthur in the Star Wars Holiday Special

The Star Wars Holiday Special celebrates its 35th anniversary this year. The show aired in the US on November 17, 1978, on CBS for the first and only time. The 97-minute special would also air in other countries. It’s safe to assume that it probably wasn’t what most fans had expected it to be. It featured Leia singing lyrics to the Star Wars Main Theme, it featured Luke who apparently hadn’t visited a Sullustan Barber (and with a lot of make-up), and it showed a bunch of strange (musical) intermezzo’s that were more than awkward. Since its initial release, there hasn’t been much love and appraisal for the Holiday Special. Therefore it has never been officially released on any medium by Lucasfilm.

Rare “Holiday Special” Backstage Photo Found

Pete Vilmur | January 4, 2011

AP Photo by George Brich

As someone always on the lookout for rare old Star Wars photos, I was pleased to discover Forbes.com’s Geek Beat columnist David M. Ewalt had unearthed a cool old gem from the vaguely-documented “Star Wars Holiday Special” of 1978, which we actually lent a bit of coverage to a couple years ago.

Articles from Nov 17, 1978

While researching a couple of those pieces, I came across a rare Associated Press image of Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher in photocopied articles from 1978, but couldn’t locate the original in Lucasfilm’s expansive Image Archives (apparently, wire photos were not automatically sent to LFL for approval and/or cataloging). Enter Ewalt’s Geek Beat column, which appears to have located the original shot of Ford and Fisher in a rare backstage moment captured by AP photographer George Brich.

Ah, to be a fly on the wall to hear what Ford is sharing with Fisher before their next Holiday Special take…

Happy Wookiee Life Day!

StarWars.com Team | November 17, 2009

November 17 marks the anniversary of the Star Wars Holiday Special, which some fans like to celebrate as Wookiee Life Day!

More info from Wookieepedia.com:

Note that Life Day most likely was originally intended as a stand-in for the American holiday of Thanksgiving, as the Holiday Special was originally aired on November 17, the day after Thanksgiving that year.

However, over time the term “holiday special” has caused most fans to misinterpret Life Day as a stand-in for Christmas instead, leading to games like Star Wars Galaxies and Star Wars Battlefront: Renegade Squadron to place Life Day on December 25. This is partly because after the initial US airing in November, the Holiday Special aired in December in other countries, where Thanksgiving is not observed and Christmas is the closest equivalent.

The canonical date for the observance of Life Day has, nevertheless, been established in what sources there are as December 25, or the equivalent thereof in the Wookiee calendar. Whether this means that Life Day actually is intended to be understood as a solstice festival akin to Christmas as opposed to a harvest festival akin to Thanksgiving is unknown.

Neither concept seems to hold much relevance on Kashyyyk, which appears to have temperate weather throughout the year (including on the Life Day we see in the Holiday Special) and where agriculture seems to be little practiced.

In honor of Life Day, here’s some of our favorite photos of celeb fans hanging out with Chewie.
