The Cinema Behind Star Wars: Indiana Jones and The Lost Missions

Bryan Young | March 18, 2014

Like most people reading this, I spent a whole Saturday binge-watching the Netflix premiere of the Lost Missions of Star Wars: The Clone Wars. We were rewarded for our patience with 13 episodes of a show we loved, which might have been 13 of the best produced. They were action packed, beautifully animated, thrilling, and, at times, heartbreaking.

But for some reason I really, really wanted to watch the Indiana Jones movies after this batch of episodes. It should come as no surprise that the Indiana Jones films might creep their influence into Star Wars projects as they have George Lucas in common, but there were three episodes of The Lost Missions that paid pretty blatant homage to everyone’s favorite archeologist.

Sunday in the Park with George…and Yoda and Indy, Too

Stephen Sondheim’s musical Sunday in the Park with George was inspired by the concept and the painting of Georges Seurat’s pointillist masterpiece, “A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte.” But here I’m referring to another George — Lucas, of course — and another park, this one being built in George Lucas’ longtime hometown, San Anselmo, California.

Drew Struzan Doc Panel at NYCC

Pete Vilmur | September 29, 2011

Drew Struzan, the artist responsible for many of the iconic poster images used throughout the Star Wars and Indiana Jones movie sagas, will soon be featured in an upcoming documentary which examines his life, craft and expansive portfolio of film posters.

To celebrate the near completion of Drew: The Man Behind The Poster, a portion of the documentary feature film will screen at the New York Comic Con on October 15, 2011. The presentation will be followed by a discussion with the film’s creators and special guests from the documentary itself, and audience members will be given a limited edition Drew Struzan poster (while supplies last)!

The NYCC screening will take place October 15th at 9pm at the Jacob Javitz Center, Room 1A24.

Drew: The Man Behind The Poster delves into some of Struzan’s most memorable works, including the Back To The Future, Indiana Jones and Star Wars film series, as well as The Thing, Harry Potter, E.T., along with much of the original artwork for the early Muppet films. Stories are told via an impressive lineup of Hollywood talents, including exclusive interviews with, among many others, George Lucas, Harrison Ford, Guillermo del Toro, Frank Darabont, Michael J. Fox, Alice Cooper, Michael Uslan, Thomas Jane, Sam Witwer, Bob Gale, Leonard Maltin, Carroll Spinney, Greg Hildebrant, Steven Spielberg and, of course, Drew Struzan.

The full feature, which is expected to be completed next month, will premiere at a film festival this coming year.

Read more about Drew: The Man Behind The Poster at the official New York Comic Con website or visit the official movie website.

Harrison Ford Compares Han to Indy Team | April 17, 2008

USA Today briefly chats with actor Harrison Ford about the start of his film career and how he thinks Han Solo and Indy differ as characters.

He gives “no credit to the culture for embracing (Han) as a hero. He’s dumb as a stump! He’s certainly got a good heart, but I think he’s certainly a much less interesting character than Indiana Jones. The breadth of his story utility was never extensive. He was the foil between the other more compelling elements of the film. There’s not breadth of character to explore beyond what we got out of him.”

ShoWest: The Clone Wars, Indy and More!

Bonnie Burton | March 13, 2008

Arriving in Las Vegas is always a surreal experience, especially during the day. So as I walked through the Paris Hotel checking out all the posters and displays for upcoming films at the ShoWest movie trade convention, I felt a glowing sense of pride when I spotted style guide art for The Clone Wars display and the poster for Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.

It’s a bit humorous to see where the posters are placed next to each other. As precise marketing folks can be about which movies they want to release their trailers before, it’s funny to see which movie posters are placed next to each other. For example, there’s something comforting knowing that Jedi Knights probably could help Harold & Kumar in their escape from Guantanamo Bay, or that the ladies of Sex and the City would be more than happy to show Indiana Jones a thing or two about running from the bad guys in high heels meant for the catwalk.
