Holiday Special Filk Song

StarWars.com Team | November 19, 2008

With the 30th anniversary of the Star Wars Holiday Special, it seems some fans have a few things to sing about when it comes to Lumpy, Malla, Bea Arthur, Art Carney and the rest of the cast. Singer/songwriter Shawn Moynihan from the band Save Pluto wrote this musical tribute to the special, to be sung to the tune of “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Heart’s Club Band.”

It was 30 years ago today
We didn’t have a VCR to play
George had given in to CBS
Who tried to do Star Wars with less.

But it didn’t take too long to see
What a horror it would come to be
Holiday Special, aww, you were so bad.

Wookiees talking with a Shriiwook sound
No subtitles to be found
Everything was going awfully wrong
Bea Arthur singing cantina songs.

But that night they introduced you to
A bounty hunter in green and blue
Holiday Special, aww, you were so bad.

Malla cooking with a bantha stew
Art Carney brought a gift or two
Itchy fantasies to kids’ dismay
Diahann Carroll, where are you today?

Lumpy watching animated Fett
Harvey Korman took one in the head
Holiday Special, aww, you were so bad.

Now Chewie made it home in time
For a Life Day chorus line
And people, if we’ve learned a thing,
Don’t let Carrie Fisher sing
Thank the Force that you will never see
A Lucasfilm release on DVD
Holiday Special, aww, you were so bad.

Simon Pegg’s Star Wars Fan Fic

Bonnie Burton | November 13, 2008

Star Wars fan fiction is fairly easy to to find online, but fan fiction written by celebrities is even rarer. Recently, actor and Original Trilogy Star Wars fan Simon Pegg writes this tale featuring Bail Organa, Shaak Ti, Mon Mothma, Kazdan Paratus, Rahm Kota, Obi-Wan Kenobi and a holo-transmission of Yoda, among others chat about Anakin’s new role as Darth Vader and what to do with those twins.

Tina Fey as Princess Leia?

Bonnie Burton | November 7, 2008

Next time you want to get excused from jury duty, try dressing like Princess Leia. In this week’s episode of the hit show 30 Rock (Season 3: Episode 2 – “Believe in the Stars”), Liz Lemon (played by Tina Fey) gets out of jury duty in Chicago by doing just that.

“I never get put on a jury. I wear my Princess Leia costume and they dismiss me immediately.”

Sure enough, she wears the classic A New Hope garb to jury duty and says in a rather bizarre accent: “I don’t think it’s really fair for me to be on a jury because I can read thoughts.” “DISMISSED!”

Did the shoes give me away?

We thought we’d start highlighting some of the cooler Star Wars finds making their way to eBay these days, beginning with this obscure unlicensed toy from Amico in 1978.

This silver stormtrooper toy knock-off apparently came in black, too, sans the shiny red shoes. Maybe the designers were going for a Tin Man/Dorothy/Stormtrooper hybrid? In any case, we’re keeping an eye out for one of these babies…

In honor of Election Day, here’s some of our favorite Star Wars-related political links from Starwars.com and the Official Starwars.com Blog. Whether you’re Democrat, Republican or Green (we don’t mean Yoda’s party), get out there and vote. May the Force be with your ballot box!

Ben Kenobi, Private Jedeye

Bonnie Burton | November 3, 2008

Finally, a Star Wars fan film worthy of Dashiell Hammett. If you like hard-boiled detective movies like the Maltese Falcon, then you’ll appreciate this fan film-noir featuring Ben Kenobi as the Private Ete… er Jedeye actually. Lots of witty fast-talking dialog and one-liners and filmed in black and white, of course.

ILM Halloween Invites Retrospective

Pete Vilmur | October 29, 2008

Slashfilm.com recently posted a short retrospective of some of the cooler ILM Halloween Party invitations released over the last 10 years, several of which give more than a slight nod to Star Wars. These are often prized by Star Wars collectors for their fun spin on the property and their insider appeal. This year’s “Leia Vamp” may top them all.

And just for kicks, here’s a mock-up design I threw out there a couple years ago that didn’t take — Grievous as Jack Skellington was just too good to pass up. Enjoy…
