Heeding the Call: Rise of the Mandalorian Mercs

Tom Hutchens | October 2, 2013

The Mandalorian Mercs

Very few Mandalorian fans ever start out without being an aficionado of the first Mandalorian: Boba Fett. That’s where this story begins, with the “WOOSH” of a 7-year-old boy who’s lifting his Boba Fett figure out of a haphazardly made Sarlacc pit in 1985. Long before novels would bring him back in the Expanded Universe, Boba was very much alive for me.

For members of the 501st and Rebel Legions, virtually every week means another opportunity somewhere in the world to put on our outfits, giving back to our local communities and helping raise donations for worthwhile causes. But it also means having FUN bringing Star Wars to life for fellow fans (and really, for ourselves, too), watching fans getting excited about interacting with their favorite Star Wars characters, and seeing the big smiles that come over everyone’s faces.

Nothing makes Star Wars fans happier than a chance to suit up and show off their costumes. Whether it’s Stormtrooper armor or Jedi robes or even a big box decorated like a Gonk droid, Star Wars costumes have always been popular. Fans my age will remember a day long ago when the only real option at Halloween was building Vader armor out of cardboard. Or wearing the sad little Saran Wrap gowns that said “Star Wars” on it when what you wanted was a faithful recreation of C-3P0’s torso.

Ewoks & Wookiees & Droids, Oh My! A Halloween Tale of Star Wars’ Vinyl Past

Steve Sansweet | October 22, 2012

Assortment photo by Pete VIlmur

How strong was the Star Wars frenzy in 1977? That year a stylized version of the Star Wars movie poster blew past the top-selling poster of all time, that of Charlie’s Angels star and blond sex symbol Farrah Fawcett (look her up in Wikipedia, kids!). So is it any wonder that everyone wanted to be a character from a far-away galaxy that Halloween?

A Nearly-Instant Leia Costume

Holly Frey | October 18, 2012

11-Quick-Leia

Halloween approaches! You’re rushed for time, but want to show your Star Wars love. I have a super-quick Leia project just for you! Leia’s A New Hope look is so iconic that it’s easy to make an instantly-recognizable homage to every Star Wars fan’s favorite princess. This isn’t going to be a screen accurate version, but it’s perfect for those times when you get a last-minute invitation to a costume party, or if you just want to add a little Rebel chic to your wardrobe. You will need some basic sewing skills, but this is all fairly simple stuff. Best of all, it will only take you an hour or two.
