Bantha Tracks: Art Galaxy, Holiday Edition

Mary Franklin | December 20, 2013

Not long ago on my Twitter I was bemoaning the fact that I rarely receive art envelopes in snail mail anymore. (Got one? Send it to me at Mary Franklin/Bantha Tracks/Lucasfilm/1110 Gorgas Avenue/San Francisco, CA 94129!)

However, even though I don’t find the art in the mailbox that I used to, Bantha Tracks still gets beautiful and creative holiday cards each year. Thank you to all who send them. Your creativity is inspiring!

Here are a few of my favorites.

Darth Maul by Dave Filoni

As a fan of Star Wars and just as a person I am so fortunate to count Dave Filoni and his wife Anne as friends. This brilliant Darth Maul/evil reindeer card, an original piece by Dave, was sent in 2010.

When it Comes to Christmas Music, Is There Anything Better Than Christmas in the Stars? (Trick Question!)

Christmas in the Stars 1980 LP cover

What can you get a Wookiee for Christmas when he already owns a comb? No, not a hairbrush. And if you don’t immediately get what I’m talking about, you’re probably not as much of a Star Wars trivia expert as you think.

Actually, despite the festiveness of the season, I’m perturbed. I’ve heard “Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer” at least four or five times on the radio already, but not once have I heard “R2-D2 We Wish You a Merry Christmas.” And what about “The Odds Against Christmas?” Those, along with “What Can You Get a Wookiee…” are three of the nine tunes on Christmas in the Stars: The Star Wars Christmas Album, which originally came out as an LP (remember vinyl records?) in 1980 from RSO Records — and fairly quickly went out of print.

Star Wars, Christmas, and Droidels!

Steve Sansweet | December 21, 2012

1_UK comic cover

If you take a moment to think about it, Star Wars and Christmas make very strange bedfellows, as this 1983 U.K. comic cover shows. There’s nothing in the movies themselves that comes close to a festive holiday except for the spontaneous galaxy-wide victory celebration at the end of Episode VI. The infamous 1978 Star Wars Holiday Special and its depiction of Life Day is nothing more than a botched attempt to create a Christmas simulacrum.

Now I may have missed them, but I don’t recall seeing sets of Mr. Spock and Captain Kirk holiday lights. Dr. Who tree toppers are probably stored away on the Tardis. And while there may be festive nutcrackers of Planet of the Apes‘ Cornelius and Dr. Zaius, I’ve never seen them.

So why Star Wars and Christmas? It’s just one more indication that Star Wars quickly became an all-encompassing, once-in-a-generation phenomenon — that kind of singular sensation that can’t be created by publicity, advertising, or marketing muscle. And as a long-lived, multi-generational phenomenon, we’ll still have Star Wars when Honey Boo Boo is in her 40s and people will be asking “Honey who?”

It’s the holiday season, and you’re running out of time to buy gifts — much like the Rebel Alliance was running out of time as the Death Star closed in on its base at the end of A New Hope. (Not exactly, but you get the picture.) Still, fear not — the Official Star Wars Blog has assembled a guide filled with gifts of all kinds, perfect for your Star Wars-loving friends and family (and yourself). Think of it as your proton torpedo in destroying the Death Star of holiday disappointment. (Or something like that.)
