Star Wars Celebration Europe: Your Favorite Memory Photo Book, Part 3

Mary Franklin | November 1, 2013

Not long ago on Twitter I asked for your favorite Star Wars Celebration Europe memories and photographs for Bantha Tracks, the Star Wars fan newsletter. You sent some beauties, and we thank you for that!

This “photo book,” the final installment of a three-part online series, is a great teaser for what will appear in the December edition of Bantha Tracks in Star Wars Insider.

Star Wars Celebration Europe: Your Favorite Memory Photo Book

Not long ago on Twitter I asked for your favorite Star Wars Celebration Europe memories and photographs for Bantha Tracks, the Star Wars fan newsletter. You sent some beauties, and we thank you for that!

This “photo book” is a great teaser for what will appear in the December edition of Bantha Tracks in Star Wars Insider. If you have read Bantha Tracks for more than five minutes you know that Star Wars Celebrations are my very favorite event to work on in my job at Lucasfilm. I started working on the Celebrations for Attack of the Clones (CII in 2002). Each has been exciting and memorable in different ways, but honestly, after we shut off the lights on Celebration III for Revenge of the Sith in 2005, I believed I would never produce another Celebration for a new Star Wars movie.

I love being wrong.

My Star Wars Celebration Europe Photo Scrapbook

Mary Franklin | September 3, 2013

Star Wars Celebrations are by far my most favorite, and all-consuming, work that I do as head of events for Lucasfilm. During the shows I’m usually running around from point A to point B to get something done, but sometimes I just must stop and take a picture of what’s going on at the show.

Celebration Europe was a joyful event. So many fans and families and people from all over Germany and beyond were smiling and having a wonderful time. I am very lucky to be a part of making the show happen. There were thousands of memories I wish I had captured, but of the photographs I did take, these are some of my favorites.

Fully Operational Fandom: Celebration Memories

Amy Ratcliffe | July 15, 2013

Attending a Star Wars Celebration isn’t like going to your average comic convention. It’s something special to be surrounded by so many people who are present for a single purpose. In a way, it’s like coming home. Don’t get me wrong — getting to see cool exhibits, exciting panels, and exclusive sneak peeks contributes to making the experience all the more memorable, but connecting with fellow fans is a huge part of it for me. You never forget your first Celebration.

Since Celebration Europe is just around the corner, it seemed like an ideal time to talk with people about their memories of their first times at a Celebration.

A Celebration Europe Must-See: Star Warriors and Deleted Scenes Screening

Back in the spring of 2006, George Lucas decided he would love to bring Star Wars fans from all over the world to march in the Tournament of Roses Parade on New Year’s Day 2007.

As I recall, our head of marketing at the time assumed that we would bring costumed characters only from the areas closest to Pasadena, California, where the parade is held. George, however, wanted to bring them from all over to say “thank you” for their support of Star Wars over the years, and to recognize the dedication of groups like the 501st and Rebel Legions for their community and charity service.

We ended up with literally blocks of marching Stormtroopers, Rebels, Imperials, Ewoks, droids, princesses, Darth Vader, and a spare Vader tracking the parade route on a side street in a van. The path of the troops to the Rose Parade was documented in Star Warriors, which is scheduled to be shown at Star Wars Celebration Europe on Pablo Hidalgo’s Behind-The-Scenes Stage in Halle 5.

Celebration Europe: Fitting In Nine Feet of Awesome

Mary Franklin | May 28, 2013

About a year ago, one of my first tweets on @MaryLFL was a snapshot I took in my office one weekend, where I had printed out and taped together the first major draft of the overall schedule for Star Wars Celebration VI, which would take place in Orlando in August. I measured it, and included in my tweet that it was over nine feet long, printed in Tahoma 10- and 11-point.

It made me smile over and over again, in the months to come, that fans started to refer to the Celebration schedule as the “Nine Feet of Awesome.” Loved that name then, and I still do now.

Fast forward to last weekend, when I was working on an overall schedule spreadsheet again, this time for Celebration Europe, coming this July 26-28 in Essen, Germany. I have not printed this one yet, so I don’t know how many feet it will be, but I do know it’s a really big show once again.

When my colleague Matt Martin asked if I would reach out to fans all over the world and ask them to submit pictures with their local landmarks as part of our May the 4th festivities, I knew the results would be good.

But I had no idea just how good!

Great Moments Behind the Scenes at Celebration, Part II

“C-3PO is on the run without security.”

“Mary, your boyfriend is in the next aisle.”

“Hide him with a Stormtrooper helmet.”

As my blog of January 22 states, there are always moments at Celebrations that sound not of this universe, or else completely unlikely, as in “You are going to serve cake to 7,000 people.” (For more on the Great Celebration Cake Adventure see Celebration IV: The Entertainment Capital of the Star Wars World.)

Star Wars Celebration III: Welcome to the (Surprising) Star Wars Party of a Lifetime

We were back in Indianapolis. We were celebrating the release of another Star Wars movie with tens of thousands of fans. We were working with many of the same staff and crew. What could surprise us? What could possibly go wrong?

Heh. Honestly, I’m both an event production person and a naturally suspicious person, so I would never think for a moment that I could not be surprised, nor that nothing could go wrong. If you ever get the pleasure of speaking with Este or Kristen from my events team, they will vouch that I am all about backups and backup plans and Plan B and even Plan C.
