Day 1: Celebration Japan Begins!

Pablo Hidalgo | July 18, 2008

Star Wars Celebration Japan has begun! It’s Saturday morning in Japan right now, and at the Makuhari Messe convention center, crowds gathered early despite the oppressively humid heat, filling the hall outside the doors before Steve Sansweet, Head of Fan Relations, arrived in a dapper Rebel-sigil-printed robe to begin the ceremonies.

The Vader Project in Japan

Bonnie Burton | July 18, 2008

The Vader Project, an exhibit featuring the reimagined visions of the iconic Darth Vader helmet by some of today’s hottest pop and underground artists, is currently on display July 19-21, 2008 at Star Wars Celebration Japan — at Makuhari-Messe in Chiba just outside Tokyo to celebrate the 30th Anniversary of Star Wars.

The Vader Project is curated by Dov Kelemer and Sarah Jo Marks of DKE Toys. Kelemer and Marks gathered close to 100 of the hottest underground and pop surrealist painters, artists and toy designers to participate. Each artist was given a 1:1 scale authentic prop replica of the actual Darth Vader helmet used in the Star Wars films. Each helmet served as a blank canvas for each artist to paint, design, mash up, and customize.

To kick off Celebration Japan’s display of The Vader Project, I chatted with curator Dov Kelemer about the new additions to the lineup.

Why did you decide to bring The Vader Project to Celebration Japan?
Another Celebration was planned in Japan and based on its past popularity Lucasfilm and the show promoters asked Sarah Jo and I to take the show over to Japan.

Celebration Japan: Arcade Fun Team | July 17, 2008

(Star Wars swag at the local Chiba video arcade)

Spending 9 hours inside a airplane watching Batman Begins over and over again made me one jetlagged blogger, but I couldn’t resist checking out the nearby arcades next to the convention center that will be host to Celebration Japan here in Chiba.

So without any rest, I went straight from the Lotteria food court right to the arcade and found some rather cool games including this one with some awesome Star Wars swag that includes cool bathroom rugs, Vader helmets and Laser Savers?

You can see all of the photos from the arcade here:

Sorry About the Mess!

Bonnie Burton | July 7, 2008

Official Star Wars artist Spencer Brinkerhoff III not only made this awesome print of Han and Greedo in the Cantina for his limited-edition Celebration Japan print called “Sorry About the Mess,” but he went a step further to make this cool animation of his art in action!

VIDEO: Sorry About the Mess

I briefly chatted with Spencer to find out what inspired him to create both the print and the animation.
