Star Wars a remarkable phenomenon that has been spreading its positive thinking around the globe for over 36 years now. And we in this part of the world are contributing a significant part of that since fandom in in Germany is considered especially active and constant. Not least, this shows in the fact that the Official Star Wars Fan-Club Germany (OSWFC) is the longest-standing Star Wars fan club on the planet — a record that admittedly makes us more than a little proud, and one that would never have been possible without your enthusiasm for a galaxy far, far away.
Six long years ago the first Celebration Europe event took over the London Excel Centre. To help promote The Force in the Flesh: Star Wars Inspired Body Art, a coffee table book I released that same year, we brought some of the popular tattoo programming elements we’d established in previous stateside Celebrations along with us. Our presence in Europe was small and tucked away on the second floor that year, right next to the incredible Vader Projects helmet display, but we made the best of it and had a great time at the show selling the book, displaying some incredible paintings done by some wonderfully talented UK-based tattoo artists and helping to “tattoo” and decorate a full-sized set of Stormtrooper armor. We also held one of our now famous Star Wars tattoo competitions and saw a phenomenal amount of incredible tattoo art from our European collector friends!

After 11 months of scheming and planning the Caravan of the Force in association with Toys”R”Us, our trek swings into full force tomorrow morning as we leave north London at 7.00 a.m. Our first stop (of many) is to pick up Maureen and Jeremy Bulloch — Boba Fett in The Empire Strikes Back — and then head to a press conference at ExCeL London, home of the first Star Wars Celebration Europe back in July 2007. It’s all part of our journey to the second Celebration Europe, July 26-28 in Essen, Germany.
This year at San Diego Comic-Con International, we did a reset on our pavilion that I just love. To give it the feel of classic Star Wars movie fun, my boss Howard Roffman suggested iconic comic art. It’s perfect.
I pulled out my Star Wars: Panel to Panel books and scanned dynamic art that I loved, and pulled comic art from a number of time periods, then cropped it and created dummy layouts that were later rezzed-up, moved around, and perfected by people much more talented than I am.
San Diego Comic-Con International (July 18-21) is famous for its special merchandise available only at the show, and several Star Wars licensees have prepared some major exclusives for this year. Check them out after the jump…and happy hunting if you’re attending!
The annual Star Wars weekends at all Legolands around the world have become a nice tradition and regularly pull a record crowd. All major fan groups are represented including the 501st, Rebel Legion and the R2 Builders. Legoland Germany is situated in Günzburg in Bavaria.
This year, the Star Wars weekend was going to be a special one for the European R2 Builders, as it was going to be the final event before the epic Celebration Europe, which is coming July 26-28 in Essen, Germany.
The Bounty Hunt, a favorite event from previous Star Wars Celebrations, is coming to Celebration Europe — with a twist! Since Celebration IV in Los Angeles, I’ve been bringing puzzle-solving races for my fellow fans, and now the Star Wars faithful coming to Essen will get the chance to use their bounty hunting smarts to play in a fun challenge.
