Smugglers Gambit

There was a lot of speculation as to what Smuggler’s Gambit would be about.  As one fan told me, “all I know is it’s a radio show written by Kyle Newman so you know it’s gonna be awesome.”  And indeed it was!  Kyle Newman began the evening by telling us a little bit about how Smuggler’s Gambit came about.  Newman said that what we were about to see was a, “Han Solo (original trilogy era) radio drama for all ages.”

Untitled-3

It was the late 80’s and Star Wars was officially dead.  Bantha Tracks had vanished in the sand and Star Wars quickly turning into a fading franchise.  During those dark days of fandom I was desperate to get my hands on anything Star Wars to keep the magic alive.  Thankfully I discovered the Star Wars NPR Radio Dramas by Brian Daley!

Happy Wookiee Life Day!

StarWars.com Team | November 17, 2009

November 17 marks the anniversary of the Star Wars Holiday Special, which some fans like to celebrate as Wookiee Life Day!

More info from Wookieepedia.com:

Note that Life Day most likely was originally intended as a stand-in for the American holiday of Thanksgiving, as the Holiday Special was originally aired on November 17, the day after Thanksgiving that year.

However, over time the term “holiday special” has caused most fans to misinterpret Life Day as a stand-in for Christmas instead, leading to games like Star Wars Galaxies and Star Wars Battlefront: Renegade Squadron to place Life Day on December 25. This is partly because after the initial US airing in November, the Holiday Special aired in December in other countries, where Thanksgiving is not observed and Christmas is the closest equivalent.

The canonical date for the observance of Life Day has, nevertheless, been established in what sources there are as December 25, or the equivalent thereof in the Wookiee calendar. Whether this means that Life Day actually is intended to be understood as a solstice festival akin to Christmas as opposed to a harvest festival akin to Thanksgiving is unknown.

Neither concept seems to hold much relevance on Kashyyyk, which appears to have temperate weather throughout the year (including on the Life Day we see in the Holiday Special) and where agriculture seems to be little practiced.

In honor of Life Day, here’s some of our favorite photos of celeb fans hanging out with Chewie.

In addition to the 501st Legion uniting Star Wars fans worldwide, the group also recognizes those special people who contribute their time and talents to the Star Wars community. These people who support of the 501st and Star Wars fandom are called “Friends of the 501st Legion.”

During San Diego Comic-Con International 2009, the Southern California Garrison recognized Fanboys director Kyle Newman for his continual support of the 501st Legion as well as for his undying love for all things Star Wars.

Southern California Garrison XO Lesley Farquhar had this to say about their newest Friend of the 501st:

“We wanted Kyle Newman to be in the Legion for the simple fact that he’s as much of a fan as we are! His work on Fanboys shows his dedication to the Star Wars genre, and of course — by asking us to help out with various aspects of the film, he definitely made fans of us!”

Sponsored by garrison members Dan Wolsey and Kit Sovine, Kyle was presented a custom plaque, coin and custom name badge commemorating his “Friend of the 501st” relationship with the 501st Legion. The induction was a complete surprise to Kyle who was there just to take a fun photo with his favorite troopers.

Starwars.com chats with Kyle about his induction and why he’s honored to be officially part of the 501st Legion.

Later that night, the first 300 attendees of the Fan Movie Challenge Awards attended an exclusive screening of Fanboys.

What follows is a transcript of the Fanboys portion of the Fan Movies presentation, hosted by Steve Sansweet, Head of Fan Relations.
