PVC Lightsaber Craft

Bonnie Burton | November 12, 2009

Using a swimming pool foam noodle, PVC pipe and an end cap and an electrical tape, you too can make this crafty lightsaber for younglings to act out their favorite Jedi battles.

Do your kids (boys in particular) love swords and/or lightsabers? Mine do. In fact everything at our house can be turned into a sword with a little imagination. We saw some of these swords at a craft fair a few years ago and decided to make some on our own. They are super easy.

We have a outdoor use only policy and strict rules about not hitting one another with them. The swords can only touch swords. They are only to be used in pretend combat as they could do some serious damage. My boys have also used them as baseball bats to hit tennis balls around our backyard.

Kid’s Stormtrooper Costume Craft

Bonnie Burton | November 5, 2009

Using foam sheets, glue, Velcro strips, spray paint and a few other inexpensive items you can make these impressive stormtrooper costumes for your little ones, just like this crafty fan did.

This is my cheap attempt at stormtrooper costumes for my 4 and 6 year -olds. It’s made to be lightweight and flexible for comfort but still hold true to the movie armor and look cooler than the store-bought stuff out there. Because of the materials used, these costumes won’t hold up to rough play or prolonged wear. Actually, they got pretty beat up after simply trick or treating.

Within the steps I’ll tell you how I did certain things and what I would do differently. My son’s costume was my first attempt and spent about 18 hours on it, not including drying time for paint and glue.

My daughter’s costume took less time because I based it on my son’s templates just smaller and I gave it a little less detail (and I was less careful with cutting and gluing). Anyway, hope you find the instructions helpful. The result was a ton of fun and the kids got a lot of attention. Cheers!

Darth Vader Paper Lantern Craft

Bonnie Burton | October 29, 2009

Star Wars artist and crafty gal Cynthia Narcisi made this awesome Darth Vader Paper Lantern to help make your Halloween extra-spooky.

IMPORTANT SAFETY PRECAUTION!!! Please ONLY use a candle votive inside a glass jar so that glass prevents the candle from getting too close to the paper! Or better yet, a glow stick instead! Vader would be most displeased if you didn’t!

Carving Yoda for Halloween

Bonnie Burton | October 29, 2009

Texan artist Scott Cummins celebrates Halloween by creating amazingly intricate 3-D versions of famous faces — including Yoda — on pumpkins.

Using photographs as a reference he then transforms each squash with tools ranging from craft knives to spoons and potato peelers. The finished product is then illuminated with a 30 watt bulb, instead of the traditional candle, to reveal the sculpture in all its glory.

Star Wars‘ Yoda, Tubaka and a stormtrooper are just a few of the film characters in Mr Cummins’ expansive collection.

“As one might expect, there is also a lot of appeal with the Star Wars-inspired carvings. I did Star Wars because it is so popular with so many people like me who had grown up watching the movie.”

Yoda Costume for Kids Craft

Bonnie Burton | October 15, 2009

Crafty gal and Star Wars fan Susan Beal made this awesomely adorable Yoda costume for her 18-month-old daughter Pearl, and was sweet enough to post all the instruction on how she did it in case others would like to make one for their younglings.

Susan Beal writes:

I used an Empire Strikes Back Yoda action figure for inspiration, and carried him around the fabric store to loosely match fabric colors to him and his outfit. The central piece, a simple brown robe, is altered from an adult T-shirt, and the other elements (a hat, snake, belt, and walking stick) are all quick sewing projects using basic templates.

Star Wars Felt Finger Puppets

Bonnie Burton | August 10, 2009

We’re a big fan of Star Wars finger puppet crafts. So when we spotted these adorkable finger puppets made by Heather Mann from Make and Takes blog, we had to blog it!

Heather writes:

Tips: If you have specific characters in mind (like these Star Wars guys), I recommend doing a quick sketch in your sketchbook so you know what pieces to cut out. I glued additional pieces to the backs of the heads to reinforce the puppets, since regular craft felt is not very stiff.

Not confident in your drawing skills? No worries – just use basic shapes like triangles (body), ovals and circles (heads). You can always pre-cut shapes out to trace to make it easier. Don’t get too detailed in extra body parts (see how I simplified the faces and the arms/feet?).

Also, don’t be too critical of your art skills!! This is very important. Your child won’t care if everything looks perfect, and will learn a lot from seeing you create without criticizing yourself! This will not be graded!
