Bonnie Burton | September 19, 2007

For all of you wanting to look like Natalie Portman in the Star Wars prequels, now’s your chance to discover which brand and color eyeshadow, eyeliner and lipstick were used to make Ms. Amidala extra fierce, as Tyra Banks would say.

Make-up by Nikki Gooley
Foundation: Make-Up Forever Face and Body foundation was applied in shade #03. Concealer: Gooley used Shu Uemura Mark Concealer with Yves St Laurent Touche Eclat Concealer in #03 under the eyes.
Powder: Gooley applied Visiora 003 Powder.
Eye shadow: Stila powder shadow in Barefoot Contessa #33 was applied all over the lids. Then it was worked it up into the socket and blended out with Stila in Moonlight #38. On the top lids, the lashline was lined with Stila shadow in Java #8. Gooley then dabbed her browbones with Calvin Klein Eye Gloss.
Brows: Brows were filled in with Stila Convertable Eye Color Liner in Teak.
Mascara: Gooley used a classic favorite, Maybelline Great Lash in Black.
Cheeks: Stila Convertable Cheek Color, a cream blush in Peony, was dabbed on the apples of the cheeks and blended up onto the cheek bone.
Lips: Stila Lipstick in Jo was applied, then blotted. Gooley then used Elizabeth Arden 8-Hour Cream over the top of the lips. Gooley says that although it’s usually used as a skin cream, she loves using it on lips because it gives them a nice, natural sheen.

Celebrating Elvis Star Wars Style

StarWars.com Team | August 14, 2007

August 16 marks the 30th anniversary of Elvis Presley’s death and while fans everywhere are celebrating his contributions to rock ‘n roll, Star Wars fans have their own way of feeling the King’s presence in the form of a very special stormtrooper.

Hailing from Merced, Calif., Ken the Elvis Trooper (TK-432) is one member of the 501st Legion that all fans can find easily in a convention crowd. Wearing sunglasses, a white cape and of course stormtrooper armor, you’ll find Elvis Trooper at cons wooing the ladies with his “Thankyaverymuch” drawl and taking endless photos with fans.

Recently this year, Gentle Giant Studios released a limited-edition mini-bust of Elvis Trooper as a collectible replica which made fandom history as this was the first time the company released a replica of a fan. Proceeds went to help the fight against cancer.

To quote the wise Master himself (Mojo Nixon, not Yoda): “Elvis is everywhere.”

Star Wars Exhibit #1 in London

StarWars.com Team | August 6, 2007

exhibit

Even though Star Wars: The Exhibition in London has been going for three months, it’s still extremely popular with European crowds – so popular, in fact, that it just landed the number one position in “The top 20 family days out this summer” posted at telegraph.co.uk. Here’s an excerpt:

It used to be Ken Livingstone who stalked the long corridors of County Hall; now (till December), it’s Darth Vader and gang. While not cheap, this exhibition does have the priceless stamp of authenticity; everything here is from the George Lucas archives. There’s R2D2, C-3PO, the Naboo N-1 Starfighter, along with costumes, props and vehicles from Tatooine, Coruscant, Mustafar and more; plus light-sabre tuition from a Jedi knight.

This exhibit is now running through December. You can check out the full story here, and the official Star Wars: The Exhibition site here.

Star Wars Party: It’s Do or Jedi!

StarWars.com Team | July 25, 2007

Entertainment Weekly magazine editor-at-large Dalton Ross reports about his 7-year-old son’s birthday which was all about Star Wars. He had games, temporary tattoos and even dressed up as Darth Maul to impress his son and his friends.

But before the game got under way, I had a little surprise for them. While they sat discussing what their team names would be (”Ooh! Ooh! Let’s be the Tusken Raiders!”), I snuck upstairs and slipped on a Darth Maul costume — yes, I own one, and no, you are not allowed to judge. I made my way down the stairs as stealthlike as possible, trying my best not to fall and kill myself, which was a distinct possibility, considering that seeing outside the mask was next to impossible. I felt a bit like Luke Skywalker in Episode 4 with his blast shield down, getting zapped by the lightsaber training droid. Only I was a lot less whiny.

The photo is one of a series taken at various conventions, starting in 2005. The first photo of 2007, taken at Star Wars Celebration IV in Los Angeles, was an overwhelming success, with media, fans, and photo-seekers clogging the aisles at the Los Angeles convention center. Jedi, Sith and Queens: CE Costume Pageant

Bonnie Burton | July 15, 2007

One of the best parts of attending a convention like Celebration Europe is to see all the fans wander around in costume. There’s Darth Vader eating some fish and chips on the entrance stairs. Tween Princess Leias are waiting in line to see the Vader Project. And look, Chewie just got some gum stuck in his fur!

And while many fans wear costumes for fun, a few dedicated folks put a lot of time and effort into their wardrobe so they can compete in the Celebration Europe Costume Pageant. Categories included Light Side and Dark Side for adults and kids.

Revenge of the Sith Creature and Makeup Supervisors Lou and Dave Elsey and Original Trilogy costume designer John Mollo acted as pageant judges, while surprise celebrity guests Darth Maul actor Ray Park and Original Trilogy Boba Fett Jeremy Bulloch did the honors of handing out the award prizes of various Star Wars collectibles. Wicket actor Warwick Davis presided over the pageant as host and read notes to the audience about the making of each costume.

The Peculiar Sci-fi Costumes of Dave T. Smith

StarWars.com Team | June 11, 2007

It’s never to early to start crafting your epic Star Wars Halloween costume now. In fact, you might glean a few tips and plenty of inspiration from artist Dave T. Smith who makes his own costumes which show entire scenes of science fiction and fantasy films including the Star Wars saga.

WFMU’s Beware of the Blog interviews the artist about his magnificent costumes and why he makes them.

When most people put on a costume, they feel empowered by the concealment, and fall into becoming (or commenting on) whatever the costumes represents. What do you become in these costumes?
Over-heated. Actually, there’s always a sense of freedom that comes from anonymity. Being masked allows for more risks and risque’ conversation with complete strangers. Usually, there’s a lot of ice for me to overcome, but these costumes overtly display my humor and creativity and provides the “street culture” (I define ’street culture’ as pop-culture-lite, knowing the big sci-fi movies that aren’t too obscure – Star Wars works where Brazil would not) a method of almost instant identification. It’s fun to watch people squint at me trying to figure it out, followed shortly by an expression of pleasant surprise.

Any funny stories?
While wearing Gotham, I remember one guy commenting that he “really liked my retaining walls,” of all things to notice. Another looked at me quite defiantly saying, “You can’t do this!” “Too late,” I replied, “I already did.” Also, one Halloween, as the Death Star, a friend of mine was playing drums in a Celtic folk-rock band at Irish pub and I arrived between songs. So he directed everyone’s attention toward me. I noticed the vocalist at the mic was dressed as Princess Leia so I pointed back and told her that I had a prison cell with her name on it, recalling the very first Star Wars movie.
