Dragon*Con: Steampunk Star Wars Costumes

We’re a big fans of the Steampunk Star Wars art by Eric Poulton, as well as the customized action figures by Sillof, so it was only a matter of time before fans created their own Steampunk Star Wars costumes to show off at thie year’s Dragon*Con.

Fans from the costuming group Outland Armour wowed Dragon*Con attendees with their costumes of Queen Amidala, Padme Amidala,
Luke Skywalker, Mara Jade, Princess Leia Organa, Slave Leia, Han Solo, Chewbacca, Darth Vader, Boba Fett, and Aurra Sing!

Laura, the Events Coordinator and Webmistress for Outland Armour, writes:

The Outland Armour crew participated in the steampunk fashion show on Friday, one of many wonderful events presented by the brand new Alternate History Track at Dragon*Con. We modeled our newly created Steampunk Star Wars designs, and they seemed to be a pretty big hit with the crowd. It was a lot of fun! All of the models and designers in the fashion show did a great job and there were some really beautiful designs from everyone involved. Excellent stuff.

Earlier on Friday, Lindsay and I were representatives for Outland Armour on the Steampunk Maker’s Panel, and then Sunday the whole crew presented our Steampunk Costuming with Outland Armour panel. Both panels went well, but we especially had a great time hanging out with the crowd and answering questions at our Sunday panel. Thanks again to everyone who came out to see us, and our apologies to anyone who didn’t get in. Hopefully the con will see fit to give the track a bigger room next year!

Dragon*Con: Love AT-AT-ctually

One of the best reasons to go to the Atlanta-based sci-fi/fantasy convention Dragon*Con is to see all the fans dress up as their favorite film, TV, gaming and comic book characters.

One of our favorites was this adorkable costume of an AT-AT by this lovely couple. Not sure if flip-flops are the best choice of footwear to stomp on Rebel scum in the snow, but I have to admit their look like their ready to have some fun.

Chewbacca at Outside Lands Festival

If you happened to attend the Outside Lands Music Festival in San Francisco last weekend, you would have caught great performances from Pearl Jam, Dave Matthew Band, Ween, Modest Mouse, Tenacious D, Silversun Pickups, TV on the Radio, M.I.A., Band of Horses and Mastodon.

But we loved to hear from music fans that they had a Wookiee among them. We’ve read a few reviews of the festival and each time we keep getting reports of a fan who dressed as Chewbacca at the festival who wandered around enjoying the Ewok-free tunes.

Noise: SFBG Blog’s Kimberly Chun reports:

Never mind the Weather — Kristy and I are distracted by a guy wearing a Chewbacca costume in the crowd. I want to poke the tags at the back of his neck back into the fake Wookiee fur. Gotta run before I lose a digit.

SFWeekly.com reports:

Ween played for nearly two hours on Sunday evening, playing nearly every song from their most popular album, “The Mollusk” — the enthusiastic crowd of loyal Ween fans pumped it up the notch it needed to reach greatness. For instance, you know it’s going to be a great show when Chewbacca shows up. Or when, during the song, “Bananas and Blow,” an audience member clad in blue sequins whips out a couple of bananas and starts dancing with them.

NBCBayArea.com reports:

A garishly clad M.I.A. played one of the few shows she’s done since giving birth last winter. One of my favorite scenes of the afternoon was watching a man in full Chewbacca costume dancing with a woman dressed as a baboon.

Now I Am the Math-ter

Ah, the pre-501st days of Star Wars costuming. Back in the ’70s and ’80s, fans with a bent for donning the duds of their favorite Star Wars denizen often scrounged the local Army surplus and thrift stores to cobble together a complete costume. This guy, captured in a ’70s-era photo we recently found on eBay, gets our vote for coolest Star Wars costume to incorporate an electrical appliance — yep, that’s a ’70s-era 10-key calculator strapped around his chest, along with some strangely metallic shinguards and one “massive jock” (in the words of Lucas Online’s Craig Drake) codpiece.

Dark Lord of the galaxy? Not so much. But if you need to figure out how long it will take a TIE fighter and asteroid travelling toward eachother at 565 and 2,655 miles per hour respectively from a starting distance of 26,254 miles to collide, this Sith’s your man.

Cheap Cantina Aliens Look Awesome

One of the most beloved scenes of A New Hope is when Luke Skywalker and Ben Kenobi look around the Cantina for a suitable pilot and we all get an eye-full of crazy-looking aliens enjoying their ale.

io9.com recently blogged about their favorite non-CGI aliens. Of course, Greedo and Cantina aliens make the list!

Weirdly, later live-action Star Wars movies have never featured aliens that felt as interesting and lively as the first glimpse we got in that Cantina scene. Of course, we’ve already exposited about our love for Greedo, but all of the quick glimpses of aliens in this scene have a liveliness that makes you feel like they’re each the star of a cool story. Not bad for an underdog film with a tiny $8.5 million budget (not much even in 1977) whose crew was busy trashing the set and making fun of the Wookiee costume.

Comic-Con 2009: Best Costumes

(Superman says, “See you next year!”)

What makes San Diego Comic-Con International so much fun is seeing all the fans come out every year dressed up as their favorite superheroes, video game characters, TV show characters, and a bunch of weird mashup costumes you’d be lucky to see at Halloween.

We’ve already profiled our favorite Star Wars costumes this year, but here’s a list of some of the other costumes we loved.


Star Trek:
As much as my allegiance is to Star Wars, I have to admit this was a great year for Star Trek. The new Star Trek movie re-ignited that Vulcan pride many of us had buried deep inside. Plus fans seem to be embracing the retro love for Star Trek characters and uniforms. Live long and prosper indeed!


Lady Deadpool:
The Merc with the Mouth just got sassier! Various Deadpool costumes were roaming around Comic-Con, but it was Lady Deadpool who got the most attention. Stormtroopers, Batman, and even Darth Vader kept looking her way. No word on what Wolverine thought, but we have a feeling that he might rethink his issues with Marvel’s only Bea Arthur-loving mercenary.

Comic-Con 2009: Best Star Wars Costumes

You can’t walk through San Diego Comic-Con without running into a stormtrooper, Jedi or bounty hunter. As usual, the 501st Legion and Rebel Legion were out in full force, as were the lovely Slave Leias, and some rather unusual and new Star Wars characters.

Here’s a recap of some of the best Star Wars costumes we spotted.

Lounge Lords:
There’s something rather satisfying about seeing two of the biddest baddies in Star Wars dressed up in their leisure wear, ready for a cocktail and a good time. These two characters roamed Comic-Con with a certain swagger that only Darth Vader and Boba Fett could pull off. Bravo, gentlemen. Bravo!

Fan in Carbonite:
Wearing full stormtrooper armor is constraining. Slave Leia costumes are drafty. But this Fan in Carbonite costume wins for most likely the hardest Star Wars costume ever to navigate through swarms of Comic-Con goers. Color us impressed.

A Lotta Leias at Comic-Con 2009

One of the best parts of being at San Diego Comic-Con is seeing all the costumes — whether it’s a ’70s disco Boba Fett or Star Trek ladies with ’60s bouffants, there’s always something worthy of a Twitpic.

This year, as every year, the Slave Leia Photo Op took center stage. When they weren’t making fanboys drool over at the Gentle Giant booth, they could be spotted gathering together in the Star Wars Pavilion. Luckily for you, Starwars.com was there making sure this get-together wouldn’t be missed.

Seth Green: Guide to Comic-Con Costumes

Entertainment Weekly/Popwatch Guest Blogger and Robot Chicken co-creator Seth Green gives a few tips on how to dress like a costume pro at San Diego Comic-Con.

So before you double up your brown bathrobe as a Jedi costume, read advice by Seth and the Robot Chicken staff: Mike Fasolo, Douglas Goldstein, Tom Root, Matthew Senreich, Kevin Shinick, Hugh Sterbakov, Zeb Wells.

Some of our fave tips:

SITH LORD: All the weight-hiding benefits of a robe with the slimming power of black. A go-to if you tend to Force-choke Hot Pockets more often than mouthy Admirals.

DOCTOR DOOM: Your cape gets smaller, but you still have full body coverage. If you can fit in the armor, the sculpted muscles will take care of the rest.

SPIDER-MAN: Now we’ve entered Spandex territory and are building a house there. We shouldn’t have to say this, but every crack and crevice will be visible. Proceed with caution.

The Force is Strong with Pete Wentz

Fall Out Boy’s Pete Wentz has been Force sensitive for some time. He’s tweeted about Star Wars Day, his recent trip to Skywalker Ranch, pondered about R2-D2 while on tour, and then bragged that R2-D2 was his new housemate. You can spot Pete’s beloved astromech here.

This year for his birthday, the rocker celebrated in Star Wars style. Pete Wentz dressed up as Han Solo, while his wife — singer Ashlee Simpson — went as Princess Leia (or is it Amidala?)

This isn’t the first time he’s celebrated his birthday with a Star Wars theme. In 2007, Ashlee bought Pete a Revenge of the Jedi poster as a birthday present.
