You Can Draw: Star Wars – Vol. 2 DVD

Bonnie Burton | July 7, 2008

As a follow-up to the original series of tutorial videos that found limited release on DVD in 2007, Lucasfilm Ltd. has authorized a new DVD from DK Publishing: You Can Draw: Star Wars – Vol. 2. Hosted by artist Matt Busch, the DVD will collect all 7 episodes from Season 2 released this year.

The first series chronicled the entire creation of a 30th Anniversary poster, whereas Season 2 includes the creation of the Revenge of the Sith Style D One Sheet, but also spreads focus to areas such as drawing on the road, storyboarding for film and animation, and comic books. Each chapter includes comical skits, including a few where Busch parodies Indiana Jones.

The tutorials began as a side promotion for the book of the same name from DK Publishing, written by Lucasfilm’s Bonnie Burton and to which Busch produced nearly 400 illustrations along with fellow artist Tom Hodges. Before released on DVD, all videos can first be seen on StarWars.com and KidDK.com.

Kristen Bell: “I Love Nerds”

The former “Veronica Mars” actress Kristen Bell talks with Entertainment Weekly about her upcoming role in “Heroes,” Judd Apatow’s Forgetting Sarah Marshall and the Star Wars cinematic love letter Fanboys.

So tell us about Fanboys.
These Star Wars nerds drive cross-country to break into George Lucas’ ranch and steal a print of [The Phantom Menace] so that their friend with a terminal illness can see it before it comes out.

You sort of have fanboys of your own. Are you happy about that?
I’m really flattered. I love nerds. Comic-Con junkies are the tastemakers of tomorrow. Isn’t that funny? The tables have turned. They’re a fiercely intelligent audience, which makes filmmakers want to please them. But I’m looking for the fangirl to come out of her shell a little, to be more accepted.

All right, you’ve held out long enough: What’s up with “Heroes?”
I’m on a sugar high, to be totally honest. For me, starting a new project is kind of like switching high schools — that feeling of excitement and nerves. And because everyone is so nice and I know so many people involved, I feel like I’m switching high schools — but one that a lot of my friends have already transferred to.

Publishing Horizon
Keith Clayton began with a quick tour of the publishing horizon from Del Rey. The Legacy of the Force series continues with the sixth installment, Inferno in September, with Fury following up in December. The last two books in the series come out in Spring and Summer of 2008. “It’s going to be a strong, powerful finish with Invincible,” said Clayton.

In October, the Death Star novel by Steve Perry and Michael Reaves tells “the ongoing politics of its creation, and everything leading up to its destruction.” In November, Karen Traviss’ third Republic Commando, True Colors comes out, with a fourth one — yet untitled — in the summer of 2008.

Today as even more fans filter into the convention center, it’s obvious which droid is getting the most love — R2-KT (named “KT” after Katie Johnson, a very special Star Wars fan who tragically passed away from brain cancer in 2005 at the age of seven).

Other popular displays getting plenty of traffic today include Hasbro’s Star Wars Transformers mashup toys, The Vader Project, the impressive LEGO Death Star display, Wii fun at the LucasArts booth and so much more.

So stay tuned for daily coverage on this blog, as well as exciting Comic-Con snapshots here.

The Vader Project Invades Comic-Con

Bonnie Burton | July 24, 2007

Since The Vader Project debuted at Celebration IV, and with additional UK-based artists on board travelling to Celebration Europe, it only made sense for popular exhibit to show at San Diego Comic-Con International.

“Comic-Con is just such a great venue that it seemed a shame to miss out on the opportunity,” The Vader Project curator Dov Kelemer says. “With the main show on its way back from a very successful show in the UK we just took the opportunity to add a few more to the show.”
