Comic-Con 2011: The Rebel Base Experience

Starting off San Diego Comic-Con International with a bang… quite literally the biggest bang in a galaxy far, far away! Fans got a first look at the Star Wars Saga on Blu-ray in The Rebel Base Experience. Inside the mysterious giant box, fans got to experience one of the Saga’s most iconic moments — the destruction of the Death Star — from a unique, in-universe vantage point at booth #3528.

Helen Mirren Wants to Wear R2-D2 Costume

Helen Mirren recently appeared at San Diego Comic-Con to promote her upcoming action film Red but told the press she would have dressed up more to blend in with fans if she thought ahead.

After seeing other celebrities who showed up to Comic-Con in costume, such as Will Ferrell who painted his face blue and wore a cape to look like his character Megamind, Mirren confessed she wished she had dressed up as none other than R2-D2.

“I wish I had dressed up now,” she said. “I could have come as R2-D2 because I liked him. He was cute. Or maybe I could dress as Harrison Ford — but that maybe isn’t the done thing,” she pondered.

Now THAT’S the droid we’re looking for!

Comic-Con 2010 Recap: Best Star Wars Costumes

It seems you can’t go five steps without running into a stormtrooper at San Diego Comic-Con, and that’s fine by us. Celebs Geek Out at Comic-Con

While most of us go to San Diego Comic-Con in search of the coveted comic book or writer/artist autograph, more and more fans brave the overcrowded convention thanks to the promise of seeing exclusive trailers and footage of upcoming films and TV shows buzzing in our head.

Of course, that means every year, a growing number of celebrities attend the pop culture convention to promote their latest project to the masses. It also means that a few celebs who happen to be comic book fans risk going on the show floor itself just to take in the madness like a bonafide geek.

Here’s a selection of some of the celebs we saw at Comic-Con this year, whether they were on the G4-Lucasfilm party red carpet, posing for photos for fans, or just being fangirls & boys themselves.

Comic-Con: Adrianne Curry & the Slave Leias

It wouldn’t be San Diego Comic-Con without Slave Leias. Of course, this year at the annual Slave Leia photo op, the usual mayhem occurred. Who needs red carpet celebrities when you can see all the Slave Leias at the convention all in one spot?

The lovely ladies were out in full Force this year, complete with a supermodel addition of America’s Next Top Model winner and reality TV star Adrianne Curry.

StarWars.com chats with Adrianne about her Comic-Con adventures dressed as Slave Leia.

What was it like being part of the official Slave Leia group photo at this year’s Comic-Con?

I had a lot of fun. The ladies were all beautiful and sweet. I had a personal armed Mando escort to meet the ladies. It was surreal to be surrounded by 4 or 5 of them, pounding our way through the crowd to the Gentle Giant booth. No one stopped me for the first time that day. They kinda just looked on in awe. My friend Eliot led the pack and had me by my chain. Then all the Leias were escorted by the Mandos to our shoot. I think it’s funny how the most overplayed costume for girls at a con hasn’t even begun to lose its luster. Sadly, I had to bow out early, but for good reason. My panel was about to start. Again, I had an armored guard to my panel. Now I know if I ever want to be left alone, rely on a squadron of Mandos!

What’s it like wearing the costume around the convention? Is it uncomfortable? Drafty?

Well, I didn’t get to shop, or do much of anything other than take pictures with people. Of all my costumes, I got recognized the most in Slave Leia. I have worked non stop in the gym to ensure I could hold my head up high while walking in Carrie Fisher’s boots. The metal bikini is not comfortable. Drafty doesn’t even begin to describe it. I ended up wearing it to the Dusk Till Con party and into the wee hours of the night. I think I must have posed for over 3,000 photos all day!

Comic-Con 2010: Kids Draw Star Wars Panel

Every year at Comic-Con, we end our Star Wars programming with the “How to Draw Star Wars for Kids” panel. Star Wars artist Katie Cook and myself show kids (and adults) how to draw uber-cute versions of their favorite characters. It’s a great way for parents to sit down and relax with their younglings as they learn to draw and have some fun showing off their Star Wars knowledge.

Ashley Eckstein Hosts Her Universe Panel at Comic-Con

One of the fastest growing demographics in the Science Fiction genre is the female audience. Thanks to an entertainment landscape which is growing more and more female-friendly, the foundation for fangirls in the Sci-Fi/pop culture world is getting stronger every year and they are rapidly becoming a Force to be reckoned with.

Realizing this incredibly important and increasing segment of the Sci-Fi audience, Ashley Eckstein, the voice of Ahsoka Tano on the television series Star Wars: The Clone Wars, has teamed up with The Araca Group, the co-producers & merchandising company behind the Broadway sensation, Wicked, to launch Her Universe — a line of merchandise designed exclusively for female fans. Beginning with a license for Star Wars, Her Universe focuses on authentic and high-quality licensed Sci Fi/Fantasy fashion apparel and merchandise.

Eckstein’s new endeavor, however, is not just about selling merchandise. She hopes to start a movement within the Sci-Fi community to equally acknowledge the female fan base. Her first step will be coordinating and hosting a special panel at San Diego Comic-Con on Saturday, July 24 from 6:30pm to 7:30pm in Room 24ABC, entitled “Her Universe: Shining the Spotlight on Female Fans — the Past, Present and Future of Science Fiction Through Female Eyes.”

It’s another comic pack with two exclusive figures. The real kind of “ah ha” for me in this pack is Darth Maul with bionic legs. So Darth Maul comes back and what would he look like if he was put back together again?

Blair:
It’s this crazy roided out Darth Maul after he got chopped in half by Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon, and he’s back and has little spider legs, right?

Chad:
He does have spider legs. And the unexpected hero that comes along with him in this pack is Own Lars.

Fan Movie Winner Profile: Family Dysfunction

As the winner for the Best Comedy Award presented by Lucasfilm and Atom at this year’s Star Wars Fan Movie Challenge at San Diego Comic-Con International, Family Dysfunction shows the story of Darth Vader’s illegitimate son who idolizes him as a child, hates him as a teen and thinks he’s an old, washed-up Sith Lord as he enters his twenties.

Starwars.com chats with Arizona-based filmmaker Rich Scheirmann about his fan movie.

What is your background in film?

I made my first film at the age of eight or nine. It was an 8mm stop-animation short staring Star Wars action figures. Since then, my love of film and video has matured. In college, I received three degrees all in the cinema realm. Performance wise, I’ve done everything from stand-up comedy to stage performances and television hosting. Over the years, I’ve participated or created well over a hundred videos.

What prompted you to make a Star Wars fan film? Have you made a fan film before?

I remember being a kid and watching a documentary on Star Wars. The one thing that has stuck with me over all the years was Mr. Lucas’ tenacity. Over the last few decades, his aversion to complacency has brought about the largest technical advancements in film. Where would we be without THX, ILM and Lucasfilm’s digital evolution? I know I’d still be making 8mm stop animation flicks.

Where did you get your idea for your film?

The Skywalker family is the poster child for dysfunction. My original idea was a mock reality show that would explore the inadequacies of the Vader clan. I wanted it to be The Osbournes in space — only with lightsabers. This was a test run.

Fan Movie Winner Profile: Star Wars: Cinemagic

As the winner for the Spirit of Fandom Award presented by Lucasfilm and Atom at this year’s Star Wars Fan Movie Challenge at San Diego Comic-Con International, Star Wars: Cinemagic takes a look at the Star Wars saga as an exciting ride through cinematic history.

Starwars.com chats with Texas-based filmmaker Joseph T. Presswood III.

What is your background in film? Did you make films as a youngster/teen?

I started back into film about six years ago, I had wanted to study film in college but the cost of getting a degree and the chances of getting a job didn’t balance out in my mind. I ended up getting my degree in Advertising from Texas State. Later, I would take film classes at night at Houston Community College (HCC). As a child I played a lot with the camera. One of the first videos my parents have is of me opening one of my gifts and getting excited when I see it’s a plastic film camera. I looked at Dad and said, “Santa gave me a movie ejector!”

What prompted you to make a Star Wars fan film? Have you made a fan film before?

I made Star Wars: Cinemagic three years ago for the 2007 Fan Movie Challenge but missed the deadline that year. The idea was to have something for the 30th anniversary of A New Hope. I thought it was a cool idea to do a short film that takes the audience on a trip through memory lane of the Star Wars universe.

I made a short called Pinball Wars back in 2004. The main difference is back then I didn’t make the short for the competition. I did Pinball Wars after I tried to make a film based on a George Carlin monologue for our class final at HCC. I spent a lot of time on that script and it didn’t work. The camera operator and lighting technician didn’t show and it was a disaster. So not to be embarrassed, I grabbed my brother and my dad’s camera and started filming Dave playing a pinball machine. I was watching a lot of Twilight Zone at the time and thought the man vs. machine angle on a Star Wars pinball machine was cool. My teacher liked it and told me about the competition. Was an amazing experience and I met a lot of talented directors at Comic-Con that year. Had a wonderful time!
