As many fans of the Star Wars universe know, 501st and Rebel Legion members across the globe dedicate time and effort year-round in support of local community and charitable organizations to help raise funds and bring smiles to Star Wars fans of all ages. And with spring just around the corner, that means “con season” is back! Officially kicking things off for everyone on the West Coast, Comic-Con International presented WonderCon 2013 with three days of convention fun.

SWCVI: Where I Know Everybody’s Name

Here’s my confession, and my no longer secret shame: I am a niche geek, a jack of very few trades.

I love Comic-Con because there are about a billion things to see, and because even though it gets insanely crowded, the jammed-up throng is nearly always remarkably cheerful and patient about being stuck somewhere while someone takes pictures or gawks at rare graphic novels or stops to buttonhole an author, artist or fellow fan. Comic-Con is a collection of crazy enthusiast tribes, whose members rub elbows (quite literally) with good humor.

The ties that bind: Why Comic-Con and Lucasfilm are soul mates

Darth who -- Star Wars at Comic Con 1976

Geek Nation has left the building and San Diego Comic-Con International is but a jumble of memories… or an expensive reality as the boxes of goodies you shipped to yourself start arriving in the next few days.

If you’ve only experienced SDCC from afar, it’s more like preparing for combat duty than a normal convention. Just the sheer size—the exhibit hall alone is 525,000-square-feet—and the crush of the crowd—tickets are capped at 125,000—make it a somewhat daunting experience, but one definitely not to be missed. And for Star Wars fans, there is an unbreakable link between the saga and the convention—one that helped both grow.

The Quotable Clone Wars Panel: Report from San Diego Comic-Con

TCW S5 Panel

My Comic-Con commitments wrapped on Saturday, the biggest day of the event, and I’ve finally had time to collect my thoughts and my notes on the Star Wars: The Clone Wars panel held this Saturday afternoon. I welcomed to the stage supervising director Dave Filoni and head writer Matt Michnovetz – who were escorted by a “security detail” of clone troopers, courtesy of the 501st Legion – and for the next hour we reflected on Season 4, peeked at Season 5, and answered fan questions from the audience. We also revealed that the season premiere will be screened for fans at Celebration VI.

New Star Wars Books and Comics Revealed at San Diego Comic-Con

Pablo Hidalgo | July 13, 2012

At San Diego Comic-Con, I got to host a pair of panels this Star Wars Day that looked ahead into some of the publishing projects for the remainder of 2012 and into 2013. They revealed, among other things, that the chronicles of Vader’s fatherhood will continue, a pop-up acklay is a real showstopper, the classic heroes return to comics in all new adventures with an old school feel, and the Big Three return to a landmark novel that could perhaps be called postapocalyptic (see what I did there?) …

Counting Down to Star Wars at Comic-Con

San Diego Comic-Con International begins today, and I’ll be moderating a trio of panels this weekend. As I rush to make sure that we’re all clear on what we’ll be talking about, and all the video and visuals are good to go, I’m thinking back to my first Comic-Con, back in the summer of 2001. It was a very different animal back then.
