“We Are Jedi” T-shirts for Japanese Earthquake Relief

StarWars.com Team | April 29, 2011

In the wake of the recent earthquake disaster in Japan, fans from across the Pacific have received authorization from Lucasfilm to create Jedi-themed t-shirts to aid in the relief effort — a cool “We Are Jedi” banner with the country’s signature hook-shape forming the “J”. From the “We Are Jedi Project” website:

While many charity activities were made around the world, we, Japanese Star Wars fans were thinking what we could do. And then we decided to start our fundraising project. The 1st mission is to make “We are JEDI” T-shirts.

While our T-shirt project is not sponsored by Lucasfilm Ltd., we got authorization and cooperation to use some Star Wars phrases and images.

These T-shirts will be developed under the supervision of Lucasfilm and all the profits that we got from the sale of them will be contributed to the Japan Red Cross Society.

Payments can easily be made through Paypal so head on over and count yourself among the Jedi in Japan!

Shogun Stormtrooper Travels Back to the ‘70s

Pete Vilmur | December 22, 2010

Wired.com recently posted a great set of photos that magically capture the retro-inspired Super Shogun Stormtrooper toy in settings decades before its release. Well, “magically” if you’ve never heard of Photoshop.

From Wired:

In Super7’s Christmas-themed ad campaign, the 2-foot-tall toy — which is a mashup of classic Star Wars action figures and vintage Japanese Shogun Warriors robots — makes an appearance in a series of warm-and-fuzzy photos supplied by Star Wars fans. The images pack the same vintage vibe as the “lost” ’70s-style Stormtrooper Super Shogun TV commercial that Super7 produced earlier this year.

For the postcard series, photographer D. Martin Myatt, who also works at RebelScum.com, asked fans from the collectibles site to donate actual ’70s and ’80s photos of themselves holding Star Wars toys. (The names used on the cards are the names of people in the pictures.) With a little Photoshop magic, the Stormtrooper Super Shogun became a part of the memories.

Check out the pseudo-retro Shogun goodness at wired.com.

Super 7 is also hosting a charity auction that will award the winning bidder a SUPER SHOGUN STORMTROOPER Engineering Test Prototype – get the details here.

Stache Wars for Charity!

StarWars.com Team | November 19, 2010

Clone Wars Producer Cary Silver’s mustache!Lando Calrissian isn’t the only one with a righteous mustache! Lucasfilm Animation and Skywalker Sound are on a mustache mission of the best kind — to fight cancer in kids!

The Mustaches VS Cancer is a 2-month mustache-a-thon where each participant brings in donations to help fight cancer, benefiting Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC).

Lucasfilm Animation and Skywalker Sound are in a friendly competition to see which team can raise the most money during the mustache-a-thon. Donate money to support your favorite team below.

Lucasfilm Animation Team Name:
Landos Disciples

Skywalker Sound Team Name:
Sound People… or Worse

The idea behind Mustaches vs. Cancer is to have an event in which many people can participate with a minimal amount of commitment (a mustache in no way hinders your daily life, it can only enhance it). Essentially all anyone needs to do is grow a mustache and take a picture of it every week (or everyday if you’re really enthusiastic) and upload it on our web site to track your progress and your Magnum P.I. likeness. All the donors need to do, is pick their favorite mustachioed face(s) via our web site, and sponsor their efforts.

So, if you can convince one of your nearly-facial-hairless friends to get started, you can make sure that the seven surprisingly colored hairs on his upper lip grow to a surprisingly disgusting length by donating to their efforts and encouraging them to keep going. What happens if they shave even though their bringing in money? They will no longer have any friends, family, or pets that like them. Because that’s just crazy.

Kids Can’t Grow Mustaches and They Shouldn’t Have Cancer Either

The Empire Skates Back Art Show at Celebration V

StarWars.com Team | August 31, 2010

Photos: Shane Turgeon & Jenny Elwick

Fans who attended Celebration V this year were not only treated to a Star Wars Tattoo Contest, but also had the chance to check out skateboard decks painted by exceptional tattoo artists. The decks were auctioned off during the Make-A-Wish Auction

The Force in the Flesh author Shane Turgeon, who organized the event called “The Empire Skates Back,” contacted some incredible talent to transform the decks into one-of-a-kind works of art for a good cause.

StarWars.com chats with Turgeon about the artistic decks.

Can you describe the gist of the Star Wars Tattoo Art show for fans who didn’t get a chance to see it?

The show was called “The Empire Skates Back.” In celebration of the 30th anniversary of The Empire Strikes Back, 30 tattooers were each given a blank skateboard deck to paint, sculpt, or build their homage, rendition or interpretation of this amazing film. Unfortunately, only 22 decks arrived in time for the show, but they were all unbelievable works of art.

Why did you decide to have a tattoo art show at Celebration this year?

What many people don’t know is that many tattoo artists are accomplished fine artists as well, and their canvas ranges from the skin to more traditional art mediums. After seeing The Vader Project at CIV and CE, I thought it would be a great idea to involve tattoo artists in a similar project. As skateboarding and tattooing as still somewhat underground, it seemed only natural to combine the two.

Exclusive PSWCS Medallions at Celebration V

Pete Vilmur | July 20, 2010

For those fans attending Celebration V and keeping a list of cool exclusives to pick up at the show, here’s one you’ll definitely want to add:

The Pennsylvania Star Wars Collecting Society will be selling Lucasfilm approved, 1.75” medallions featuring an image of Chewbacca for $10 each at their booth at Celebraion V with all proceeds benefiting Canine Corps.

Canine Corps is an organization that cares for the dogs of US military personnel deployed overseas in Iraq, Afghanistan or Africa. They provide this service free of charge to soldiers who would otherwise be forced to give up their companions for adoption. PSWCS is thrilled to have the opportunity to support our American servicemen through this worthy charity.

This medallion is the second PSWCS has produced and sold for charitable efforts. In 2009 PSWCS sold medallions featuring an image of Obi-Wan Kenobi to benefit Operation Ward 57.

The medallions are a one-time, limited run of 1000.
