For members of the 501st and Rebel Legions, membership means celebrating Star Wars and contributing to local community and charitable causes. Virtually every week somewhere in the world, an event featuring members dressed as characters from the Galactic Empire or the Old Republic or the Rebel Alliance may be found helping out their neighbors and bringing smiles to everyone they encounter.

So with the once every two-years interstellar party that is a Star Wars Celebration kicking off with fans coming from all over (the galaxy…) to Orlando, Florida, one group in particular plays a very prominent, recurring, all-volunteer role in helping to make Star Wars come to life.   Among all the featured events, guests, panels, and fan-experiences, any major Star Wars fan knows they have to keep their eyes open for representatives from Lord Vader’s personal detachment of Imperial Troops: the 501st Legion.

Plastic Space Men Need Love Too

Albin Johnson | July 17, 2012

dcon2001_210

Greetings, nerf-herders. I thought I’d start with a little intro to the 501st Legion club I started back in 1997. You may ask, ‘what is the 501st’? The formal answer is a worldwide costuming club that dresses in the costumes of the Galactic Empire and associated ‘bad guy’ characters. We’re part of a large fan community that includes the Rebel Legion (name says it all), the Jedi Assembly (again, the name tells you what they dress up as), the R2 Builders, Galactic Academy (costuming kids), Mando Mercs, and many others. But as someone who’s watched the Legion grow from two guys to a zillion worldwide, let me tell you the Legion isn’t so much a club as it is an experience.

Introducing… Albin Johnson

Albin Johnson | July 16, 2012

al-trooper-biopic

Hello to all my fellow Star Wars fans! My name is Albin Johnson and I’ve been a fan since I was eight years old when I saw it in a grimy theater in 1977. It was such an amazing beacon of hope and adventure that I went back thirty more times! Twenty years later in 1997 I bought a set of Stormtrooper armor and started a website called Detention Block 2551, where I posted pictures of me in armor and hinted at a unit that served Lord Vader personally. In no time other Stormtroopers joined and it quickly grew to become the 501st Legion costuming group, featuring all the bad guys we’ve come to love.

Lucas, Filoni and Others Sign Clone Wars Poster for Charity

StarWars.com Team | January 26, 2012

Clone Wars Supervising Director Dave Filoni

In an effort to support the Aids and Breast Cancer Emergency Fund of San Francisco, Lucasfilm Animation has just posted a 3-day auction at eBay for a rare Clone Wars artwork poster by Dave Filoni, supervising director of The Clone Wars. In addition to the striking artwork, what makes this poster exceptionally cool are the signatures that grace it — here’s the auction description:

This is an extremely rare poster that was only made available to select pass-holders at Star Wars Celebration V (2010). The artwork was done by Dave Filoni, Supervising Director of the hit series Star Wars: The Clone Wars and features fan-favorite characters – Cad Bane and Boba Fett.

The poster includes original signatures from George Lucas, Dave Filoni, Daniel Logan (“Boba Fett” in Star Wars: Episode II Attack of the Clones and Star Wars: The Clone Wars) and Corey Burton (“Cad Bane,” “Count Dooku,” and “Ziro the Hutt” in Star Wars: The Clone Wars).

Opportunities to pick up any officially-sanctioned, multiple-signature posters from Lucasfilm don’t come up too often, and this one’s window will be closing in less than 3 days — head on over now and place your bid!

Typographic Star Wars Posters to Benefit Children

UPDATE: These posters are now available for a limited time on eBay. Also, starting November 25, canvas editions will be available (10 of each) for 100 euros each. Sales for all the posters and canvas editions will end on December 31, 2011.

H-57 Creative Station, a boutique advertising agency and design studio based in Milan, Italy, had a small idea that blossomed into an Internet
phenomenon.

Its three principles, Matteo Civaschi, Gianmarco Milesi, and Sabrina Di Gregorio, all happen to be huge Star Wars fans and last November they decided to make a series of promotional posters of Star Wars characters exclusively through the use of existing—and mostly older—
type fonts. They printed some as gifts for customers to show H-57’s creativity. Then the images of Darth Vader, Yoda, and a Stormtrooper—using typefaces with names like Bodoni Bold and Helvetica Light Condensed—were posted online and within days went viral. The agency received hundreds of emails from new fans all over the world.

The “As You Wish” Charity Project Announced

StarWars.com Team | September 27, 2011

The official Celebration VI site just posted an announcement for the “As You Wish” charity art helmet project, which will present scores of artist-designed Boba Fett and Stormtrooper helmets to be auctioned off online after the show.

Art Andrews from The Dented Helmet costuming group, and Chris Romines from the 501st Legion are heading up the effort with support from eFx.

“Some of the artists involved in this project include Joe Johnston (the original designer/painter for Boba Fett and the director of Captain America); Weta Workshop (New Zealand FX Studio: Lord of the Rings and District 9); and Jim Lee (DC Comic Artist),” says Andrews.

Check out the full announcement at the CVI site and get updates on the project at Facebook.

1977 Star Wars Celica: Have You Seen This Car?

Pete Vilmur | September 23, 2011

With today’s auction for the 2012 Star Wars Volkswagen Passat ending soon, another legendary auto will soon join the ranks of Star Wars custom cars, which already includes a 1997 Special Edition Hummer and 2005 Vader Viper. And so the time feels right to once more question the whereabouts of the first officially-sanctioned Star Wars custom car, one 1977 Star Wars Celica Liftback GT awarded in a sweepstakes a few months after Star Wars‘ release that same year.
