Zac Efron Shows Off His Lightsaber Skills

Last year we reported about actor Zac Efron’s epic lightsaber battle in his new movie 17 Again. With the movie hitting theaters this weekend, Zac and his castmates have been talking in their round of press junkets about how much fun it was to wield a lightsaber in the film.

Here’s a selection of some interviews where Zac talks about his love for Star Wars and his Jedi training for the film.

In this video interview with AmericanSuperstarTV, Zac talks about wanting to do a lightsaber battle on film since he was a kid.

Did you ever think you’d be a Jedi Master?

Zac: (laughs) That was another fun thing in the movie. I’ve wanted to do a legit lightsaber fight since I was 10 years old. And finally at 21, we made it happen. That’s as close as I’m gonna get.

James Marsters the Stormtrooper?

Fans already know that actor James Marsters — who played Spike the vampire on Buffy and Angel — has a soft spot for Star Wars — (which is ironic considering his character’s eagerness to destroy a certain Mr. Boba Fett action figure.)

In fact, he played Captain Argyus in “Cloak of Darkness” on Star Wars: The Clone Wars animated series – which you can read all about in our interview with Marsters here.

In a recent Q&A where Marsters answers fan question on his official site, we were excited to learn that he would be interested in suiting up in stormtrooper armor for the next Dragon*Con.

We sure hope someone from the 501st is reading this, because we have a feeling seeing Marsters in trooper gear would make a lot of fans happy. HINT HINT.

SW Auction to Aid Aussie Bush Fire Victims

Star Wars fans in Australia have banded together to help victims of recent bush fires that ravaged the state of Victoria, posting several eBay auctions of items donated by actors from the saga, Lucasfilm, and others.

From the Victorian Bushfire Appeal 2009 website:

On February 7th 2009, the state of Victoria in Australia was ravaged by Bushfires.

These wildfires destroyed thousands upon thousands of hectares of native forests and laid waste to many townships.

Over 2000 homes were destroyed and over 7000 people were left homeless by these fires which burned out of control for many weeks. Over 200 people were reported to have lost their lives in what was to become known as Australia’s worst natural disaster.

The people of Australia however were not beaten by these events and they rallied together as one to help those in need. Countless donations of clothes and food flooded into relief centers and thousands of volunteers lined up to help. People donated their time, their homes and opened their hearts to help those effected by the fires.

Hey, Aren’t You Anakin’s Girl?

Once you star in a Star Wars film, you’re forever part of the legacy, meaning fans everywhere will instantly know who you are…or not. Recently, Star Wars prequels actress Natalie Portman was faced with a fan who knew her…or at least Amidala.

The 27-year-old star was rudely interrupted while shopping for groceries in LA, when a man shouted after recognizing her as the sci-fi trilogy star, but failed to remember her name.

“No one had noticed Natalie because she was dressed in a hoodie and was wearing sunglasses,” the Daily Express quoted an eyewitness as saying.

“But that changed when this busker started yelling, ‘It’s that girl from Star Wars. She played Queen Amidala. What is her name?’”

“Natalie promptly grabbed her radishes and scarpered,” the witness added.

Bill Hader Geeks Out with EW

Saturday Night Live cast member, comedian and actor Bill Hader does a mean tauntaun impression and he has the statue of thanks to prove it. Fans already know about his love for Star Wars, but Entertainment Weekly magazine decided to ask him every pop culture question imaginable to find out more about his geek cred regarding comics, sci-fi, ’80s movies, cancelled TV shows and more! And for the record, he doesn’t Twitter.

What is your geekiest possession?

In my office at SNL, I have a statue of a Tauntaun, which is a creature from Star Wars. The people at Lucasfilm saw an impression I did of one on Conan O’Brien, and they sent me it. Every time a host comes in to talk, they’re like, “What the hell is that?” “What do you mean what the hell is that? It’s a Tauntaun. Haven’t you seen The Empire Strikes Back? I guess you haven’t, or you wouldn’t have asked such a dumb question.”

Star Wars or Star Trek?

To be honest, and this sounds crazy, I didn’t really start getting into Star Trek until about six months ago. Ben Stiller is a huge Star Trek fan, and while we were doing Night at the Museum 2, he was like, “You’ve never seen an original Star Trek?” I just blindly bought three seasons of Star Trek, and I love ‘em. But I’m a Star Wars geek. I’m excited about the new J.J. Abrams movie, but if you asked me between Star Trek and The Twilight Zone, I think I would be even more of a Twilight Zone guy.

Baby’s First Wookiee Word

Award-winning author Cory Doctorow can now say he’s a proud father to a budding Star Wars fan. The author of the critically-acclaimed young adult novel Little Brother was surprised by his daughter’s first word, inspired by everyone’s favorite Wookiee.

Doctorow tweets:

The baby just said her first word: Chewbacca. SRSLY! She was having her bath with her Star Wars bath toy and staring intently at Chewy. I said, ‘That’s Chewbacca’ and she said ‘Joo-bak-ba!’ Lots!

WonderCon 2009: Celebrities

You don’t have to head to Los Angeles or New York to see your favorite comic book, movie and TV celebs. Thanks to conventions like WonderCon, they come to you. In fact, they sit at a table and wait for you to come by with things to sign. Sometimes they’ll even pose for photos or make small talk with you about their Twitter.

Here’s a selection of some of the famous folks you might have spotted at this year’s WonderCon.

Carrie Fisher:

Princess Leia herself met fans and signed posters, prints, photos and more. In the photo above, Fisher signs a Nagel-inspired print called “The Princess” presented by the artist himself Craig Drake.

Mark Hamill:
Luke Skywalker (or the voice of the Joker, depending on your fandom) signed everything from Star Wars posters to rare Corvette Summer memorabilia. Mark Hamill didn’t sing any verses of “Luke, Be a Jedi Tonight” but this rare appearance at WonderCon did make fans giddy with the Force.

Dave Filoni:
As the Supervising Director of Star Wars: The Clone Wars TV show, fans follow around Dave Filoni around like the Jedi Pied Piper. Filoni was one of the coolest interviews at the Star Wars presentation on Saturday as he talked about Cad Bane and the bounty hunters who will be invading the series soon. Another highlight for us included watching the 501st Legion induct Filoni as an Honorary Member at their annual WonderCon dinner. He was presented with the coveted badge, as well as one-of-a-kind art from Cynthia Cummens. Here he is posing with Ahsoka’s lightsaber that he signed for a special fan.
