Celebration Europe Momentum Builds

John "Dak" Morton | March 4, 2013

Everybody knows Obi-Wan Kenobi’s line in A New Hope in reference to the destruction of Alderaan: “I felt a great disturbance in the Force.”  I’d be interested in hearing from anyone with examples in the Expanded Universe where Force-sensitive beings express feelings of great joy in the Force. You know, as if millions of voices suddenly cried out in celebration and were suddenly expressing joy that something marvelous has happened…or will.

In this galaxy, some of us creatures who surf or body surf know the feeling of a wave mounting behind us that enables us to fly down its face and onto the shoulder. The art is in sensing the force of the wave well before it breaks and where one is in relation to it so as to be in tune with it. You gotta feel its momentum.

And so it is with the momentum that is building for organizers, celebrity guests, and fans in the run-up to Celebration Europe in Messe Essen, Germany.

10 Essential German Phrases for Star Wars Celebration Europe

Star Wars Celebration Team | January 16, 2013

Star Wars Celebration Europe is coming up fast. The full site has been launched, tickets go on sale tomorrow, a bevy of guests are in the hopper, and — from what we’ve seen on Twitter, Tumblr, and Instagram — fans are already hard at work on assembling collections and costumes for the first ever Star Wars Celebration in Germany. On this note, we’d like to take today to recommend that in between gathering together your pins, patches, and vintage action figure and/or knitting, sewing, or vacuum forming your duds for the costume contest, you also brush up on your German.

Hang On to Your Helmet — The Holidays Are Over!

Mary Franklin | January 8, 2013

cvi

For roughly the past month it’s been the same:

  • “We can rethink that floorplan after the holidays.”
  • “I can have the answers you need after the holidays.”
  • “We’ll send those links after the holidays.”
  • “After the holidays we’ll be ready to revisit this.”
  • “The document will be completed for you after the holidays.”
  • Etc. etc. etc. “after the holidays.”

Honestly, it’s a good tradition that people in the world disconnect and focus on something other than work for a few weeks each winter. Family, friends, travel, avoiding cliffs, a few good books and movies — whatever it is that refuels us, it’s probably healthy for humankind.

Holidays On Ice

Mary Franklin | December 24, 2012

140_WalkingOut

December 25th – provided that the world has not ended per the Mayan calendar – I’ll be flying to Hoth.

More specifically, I’ll be flying to Cordova, Alaska for the holidays, where I used to live before I came to work at Lucasfilm. It will be dark and cold and icy, and some of my dearest friends will be there. Somehow my Alaska friends carry on at full speed no matter how far the mercury drops down or the snow piles up. I used to be president of ye old Star Wars Online Fan Club when I lived there – a long time ago before StarWars.com was even born yet.

Celebration Europe: The Great Building Game Begins!

Mary Franklin | November 13, 2012

Unknown

Yesterday, for a good part of the day, I took over one of our big conference room tables here at Lucasfilm and started playing a big puzzle game with the floorplan of the Messe Essen in Germany.

My task: To look over all kinds of different ways to pack as much fun and excitement into our space as possible. Star Wars Celebration Europe next summer will be the biggest Star Wars event ever in Germany, and we want to make sure all the very best in Star Wars fits in the best possible way.

Report from the Star Wars Celebration Europe II Tour

Mary Franklin | October 30, 2012

Belgians_ForBlog

After meeting with Star Wars fans in London, Germany, and Belgium over the past two weeks, I’m once again awed and inspired by the creativity (and organization!) of the fan community.

In prepping for Celebration Europe II, I was also able to spend quality time in the Essen convention center (Messe Essen) with some colleagues from Lucasfilm and our counterparts at ReedPOP. We considered possible floor plans, went over the audio/visual and other technical details, and eyed up some spaces for possible evening events.

This solid planning, plus the fact that tickets will go on sale very soon at www.starwarscelebration.eu, makes me feel like we are well underway to an exciting event next July.

The 30th anniversary of Star Wars: Episode VI Return of the Jedi is a landmark too big to go un-celebrated, and if there’s one thing Star Wars fans know how to do better than anyone, it’s how to celebrate and party.

But five long years have passed since the summer of 2007, which saw the dual hit of Celebration IV in May and Celebration Europe, held at the Excel in London over the weekend of July 13-15. Bringing the saga to the country where the majority of the first four movies were filmed, UK and European fans were treated to appearances by Mark Hamill, Ian McDiarmid, Anthony Daniels, Peter Mayhew, and a plethora of galactic stars, as well as the premiere of Fanboys, Charles Ross and the One Man Star Wars Trilogy, the Palitoy 2007 Archive, talks, signings, parties, and much, much more. There was even the infamous Jedi versus Sith battle on the bridge!

Celebration Europe: A True Force of Fans

Mary Franklin | October 16, 2012

Celebration_Europe_Final_LogoI’ve been back in the States from my Namibia trip barely one week, and tomorrow morning I’m taking off to work at Brand Licensing Europe in London. I’ll be in London for the week, then will travel on to Essen, Germany for Celebration Europe meetings, then finally take a too-quick trip to Belgium and the fabled fan-built Star Wars prop warehouse.
