Star Wars Tattoo Contest Winners at Celebration V

StarWars.com Team | August 31, 2010

As expected the Star Wars tattoo contest at Celebration V was a huge hit with fans who prefer to go under the buzz of the needle to prove their love for the saga. Fans competed in a skin art contest showing off some of the most impressive tattoos on this side of the galaxy.

StarWars.com chats with tattoo pavilion co-organizer and The Force in the Flesh author Shane Turgeon about the contest which has become a fan favorite at Celebrations past and present.

Out of all the tattoos in the contest which one were you most impressed by?

That’s a really hard question to answer! Jeff Menz had a killer Hildebrandt full back piece, Ron Stein’s leg was totally mind blowing, Jim Sharamitaro’s Vintage Free Boba Fett Offer tattoo was totally epic, and so many of the tattoos done over the course of the weekend were just to die for. There’s no way I could pick just one from such an overwhelming amount of quality work to choose from.

How was this tattoo competition different than other Celebrations?

This year we added the fifth category, Tattoo of the Weekend, which celebrated the work that the artists did at the show. I think it was one of the most interesting categories which allowed us to really help showcase the Tattoo Pavilion as well.

What was your favorite moment during the contest?

I think when one of the contestants, JP Morgan (no kidding, JP Morgan) was showing his tattoo to our host Dave Collins and referencing why R2-D2 was his favorite character — notably being that they’re both short and round, make funny noises and love to party.

Mondo Limited-Edition Yoda Print

StarWars.com Team | August 26, 2010

Collectors and fans who’d like to add something a little different to their Star Wars art collection should check out this new series of art prints from Mondo.

Mondo is the Alamo Drafthouse’s collectible art boutique, featuring designs from world famous artists based on licenses for popular TV and movie properties including Star Wars, Star Trek and Universal Monsters.

Here’s the most recent print “Great Warrior” by artist Todd Slater.

Slater says about his print:

From the first time that I saw Star Wars, I was captivated by the mystery of Yoda’s species and home world. For Yoda, Dagobah was a place to disappear, and I see him as being at one with the landscape. For this print I wanted to camouflage him as a part of this murky planet using leaves, sticks, ferns and other flora found in the swamps. The image is printed on black paper with a shiny black varnish layer in the background. The varnished layer reveals even more of Dagobah and is shown as a transparency through Yoda’s face.

The Kanji (Japanese characters) on the left side gives one word representations of the six stages I identified in Luke’s Jedi training: the meeting of a great warrior, the discovery of a Jedi’s strength, entering of a domain of evil, learning that size matters not, seeing the future and finally, the confrontation of Vader. The screen print is seven colors, which is the most I’ve done to date.

A Tattoo Tribute to The Clone Wars

StarWars.com Team | August 4, 2010

photos: courtesy of Shane Donnelly

Fans show off their Star Wars pride through costuming, droid building, gaming, writing fan fiction, making fan films and a zillion other ways. But it takes a certain level of dedication to get a tattoo of your favorite Star Wars character, vehicle, creature, droid or scene.

Star Wars fan Shane Donnelly recently payed tribute to The Clone Wars with this epic tattoo. StarWars.com chats with him about why he chose to give the animated series some permanent love.

Why did you go with The Clone Wars as a theme?

I went with The Clone Wars theme because, first I hadn’t seen any of the current series. (There is of course, Genndy Tartakovsky’s Clone Wars micro-series). And second, because I wanted to celebrate the continuation of the Star Wars story. After Ep. III none of us were really sure if or when we’d see new Star Wars other than books, comics, etc. And third, because it’s just too cool.

Describe all the cool stuff going on in your tattoo? Was there an overall theme?

There’s not much of a theme to it. Basically you have the hologram Sidious over shadowing everything with Obi-Wan and Anakin (the heroes of the Republic) on either side of him; which is kind of symbolic to the story.

I also wanted to have a strong female presence. Star Wars has always had strong female characters so I wanted to show that. That’s represented by Ventress, Ahsoka and Aayla. I also have Rex with another clone trooper because, well clone troopers are cool.

Mondo Limited-Edition Luke & Yoda Print

StarWars.com Team | July 29, 2010

Collectors and fans who’d like to add something a little different to their Star Wars art collection should check out this new series of art prints from Mondo.

Mondo is the Alamo Drafthouse’s collectible art boutique, featuring designs from world famous artists based on licenses for popular TV and movie properties including Star Wars, Star Trek and Universal Monsters.

Here’s the most recent print “Father: Encounter on Dagobah” by artist Tomer Hanuka.

Hanuka says about his print:

“The central idea going into this image was depicting planet Dagobah itself as a portrait of Luke’s subconscious in it’s most interesting and unformed phase. In a nightmarish sequence, Luke runs into the mist where he thinks he saw Vader. Luke finds him and a lightsaber duel ends with Vader’s decapitation . The mask cracks open on the severed head, exposing the frozen face of a dead Luke Skywalker.

The suggestion here is that somewhere within Luke’s psyche there is a potential for ultimate evil. Luke’s greatest challenge isn’t the Galactic Empire and it’s endless, faceless troopers, but the magnetism of the dark side; the seductive idea of choosing his own potential for power over everything else.”

Previous prints include “Scrap Yard Power Droid” by artist Jeff Soto and “Raider” by artist Dave Kinsey. The posters are limited edition and screen printed. The posters sell out at AMAZING speed (sometimes within minutes). The recent release of the 2nd poster in Mondo’s Star Wars series, “Raider,” sold out within 25 minutes.

Chewie Rides a Giant Squirrel Artist Revealed

Bonnie Burton | July 28, 2010

art: Tyler Edlin

When I first came across this epic piece of fan art of Chewbacca riding a giant squirrel into battle against the Nazis all I could think was “This is Wookiee-tastic!”

I tracked down the artist Tyler Edlin to chat about his masterpiece and its back story.

What is your art background?

I attended a 2 year certificate program at the Art Institute of Boston At Lesley University. I also have experience in photography and hold a Bachelors degree in design.

What is the story behind that awesome piece of art depicting Chewbacca riding a giant squirrel into battle against Nazi soldiers?

I asked my friend Gary what he would like a for a wedding present. At first he said Chewbacca riding a giant squirrel into battle against an unseen force living in the shadows.

He added, “give him long flowing fur and his mount should look adorable. He should be riding to expected death on a last charge.”

Eventually he settled on him battling Nazis. So there is the finished a product a wedding commission.

The Droid Art You’re Looking For By Jeff Soto

StarWars.com Team | June 25, 2010

If you love Gonk the Power Droid, and dig artists like Jeff Soto, and collect Star Wars art — you’re in luck! Well, you were in luck. This awesome print called “Scrap Yard Power Droid” by Jeff Soto is a hand-numbered 24″ x 36″ screen print; printed by D&L Screen Printing; and limited to 350. And SOLD OUT! Doh!

But don’t worry, more awesome Star Wars prints from Mondo are on the way!

Mondo Creative Director Justin Ishmael writes:

Mondo is pleased to announce that we have teamed up with Lucasfilm LTD for a completely licensed and official Star Wars poster series. We have been secretly working on this for over a year, but we are finally ready to unveil the first in a series of original, limited-edition screen-printed posters.

First up in the series is Jeff Soto with a GNK Power Droid or, as he is known to most people, Gonk.

The print is now sold out! Thanks to everyone who ordered one. We are very excited about this new series. This is just the beginning. If you missed out on the poster today, we will have some for sale tonight at the Mondo shop at 1120 S. Lamar Blvd. in Austin, TX. Super-limited quantities.

This is what artist Jeff Soto said about his print:

Star Wars was a pretty big deal for me as a kid. I was only 2 when the movie came out, and I can’t even remember if I saw it or not in the theater. The characters and story were known to many of us mainly from the toys! The toys! Oh they were wonderful, and we played with them for hours (and wore out the BEST and Sears catalogue)!

One of my favorite action figures was the Power Droid, and I didn’t really know much about the little guy, but for some reason he (I pictured it being male for some reason) captivated my imagination. I realized at some time that he’s barely even in the movie, which added to his mystique.

Over the years he functioned as the worn out, floppy-legged power supply for numerous Transformers, GI Joe’s and Construx. He is small and cute, and found a place in my childhood heart. I still have the little guy. This piece is an ode to the Power Droid!

Dignified C-3PO & Chewbacca Portraits!

Bonnie Burton | June 22, 2010

Whenever I watch that scene in A New Hope where C-3PO and R2-D2 get kicked out of the Mos Eisley Cantina, and I wonder if C-3PO was wearing a derby hat if he would have gotten a Blue Milk?

If Chewbacca wore a monocle, would Leia really rather kiss a dapper Wookiee? (I know I would!)

I’m not the only one who wonders these things. Luckily, artist Greg Peliz put these ponderings into rather dignified Star Wars character portraits of C-3PO, Chewbacca (based on the original dapper Chewie painting by artist Robert Mackenzie), and Boba Fett.
