Executive Editor J.W. Rinzler Talks Star Wars Art: Comics
Star Wars Art: Comics, the second in a series from Abrams exploring artwork inspired by the Star Wars saga, reveals the best original artwork from the past three decades of Star Wars comic-book publishing. Lucasfilm Executive Editor J.W. Rinzler, who has worked closely with George Lucas in developing the Star Wars Art book series, offered some insights into Lucas’ affinity for comic book artwork:
First, what inspired Star Wars Art: Comics?
Well, the Star Wars Art series is George’s idea. The first one was Star Wars Art: Visions, and this is the second. In this one, George wanted to highlight the best of Star Wars comic art, including a few new commissioned pieces from top comic book artists, old and new. His main objective was to present this comic book art as fine art.

Star Wars Art: Comics Interview: Carlos Garzón

Star Wars Art: Comics, a new book from Abrams which showcases the best original artwork from the past three decades of Star Wars comic-book publishing, has just been released this week, much to the delight of Star Wars comic art aficionados. One of the artists prominently featured throughout the new book is comic legend Carlos Garzón, whose Star Wars illustrating career reaches all the way back to Marvel’s The Empire Strikes Back series in 1980. Friend, author, and StarWars.com contributor Ryder Windham caught up with Garzón during last year’s Celebration V to discuss his long and varied career in the world of comics —

Longtime fans of Star Wars comics will recognize the name Carlos Garzón as the artist who worked with writer Archie Goodwin and artist Al Williamson on the Marvel Comics adaptations of The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, and several episodes of the syndicated Star Wars comic strip. I had the great pleasure of meeting Garzón and seeing his portfolio of original art at Star Wars Celebration V, and he graciously answered many questions about his life and work.

Typographic Star Wars Posters to Benefit Children
UPDATE: These posters are now available for a limited time on eBay. Also, starting November 25, canvas editions will be available (10 of each) for 100 euros each. Sales for all the posters and canvas editions will end on December 31, 2011.
H-57 Creative Station, a boutique advertising agency and design studio based in Milan, Italy, had a small idea that blossomed into an Internet
phenomenon.
Its three principles, Matteo Civaschi, Gianmarco Milesi, and Sabrina Di Gregorio, all happen to be huge Star Wars fans and last November they decided to make a series of promotional posters of Star Wars characters exclusively through the use of existing—and mostly older—
type fonts. They printed some as gifts for customers to show H-57’s creativity. Then the images of Darth Vader, Yoda, and a Stormtrooper—using typefaces with names like Bodoni Bold and Helvetica Light Condensed—were posted online and within days went viral. The agency received hundreds of emails from new fans all over the world.

New Art from Upcoming Star Wars Art: Comics Book
Artist JH Williams III posted a new image from the upcoming Star Wars Art: Comics book (due out October 1, 2011) on his blog today.
From the artist’s blog:
I had been told that George was a longtime comics fan. So I also wanted to go for this classic giant monster versus hero idea, like stuff you might see in old Kirby comics, but here it needed to be a mechanical weapon that looked like a creature, giving a sense of story beyond fighting a giant monster.

Star Wars Fail Whale
When Twitter goes down for maintenance or unexpected outages, many a social media addict frantically tries to refresh their screen to see something other than the dreaded Fail Whale.
But artist and Star Wars fan Le Kemp did a different take on the Fail Whale which makes the whole wait more tolerable. Nothing beats TIE fighters on Twitter! tweet tweet!

Boba Loves Bunnies?
Artist Kelly Kerrigan shows off a soft spot of Boba Fett that we don’t normally see. Makes you wonder if the Slave I has a rabbit hutch. StarWars.com chats with Kelly about her Star Wars bounty hunter bunny art.
Why did you decide to pair up bunnies with Star Wars characters?
This new series of artwork is how my creativity has responded to the death of my husband, Paul. He died on December 18, 2010 after finding out in August the he had a rare cancer. We both loved Star Wars and he had a particular connection to rabbits as they are portrayed in movies, books and gaming.
He would often dress as a Pooka for LARP events. I started painting about 2 weeks after he died and the ideas for new work keep coming. I have always been a painter, but I think this is the best work I have ever done. I am certain that He is the inspiration for all of this and the reason I feel so good about what I am painting.
What is it about bunnies that make even the most ruthless bounty hunter look like a softy?
I think therein lies the answer. The softening of the ruthless: The unlikely care and cuddling that a hardened clone warrior would have to undertake to handle a delicate bunny seems as it would be an act of extreme patience on his psyche. Perhaps his trainers are putting him through an exercise to engage those parts of his brain that define the opposite of his purpose.

Dark Lord of the Board
Indonesian artist Abell Octovan recently showed his custom “Lord on Board” figure (8″) + a prototype of his upcoming Boycott resin figure in the Plastic Culture booth at the Jakarta Toys and Comics Fair.
Vinyl Pulse reports:
The deep blue shreddin’ figure is a follow-up of sorts to his wave cravin’ Lord on Vacation. The Lord figures are great — iconic culture mash-ups executed with minimal sculpting and paint which increases the power of the imagery.

Baby Star Wars Adidas Posters
Hong Kong artist Dorothy Tang created these whimsical posters to celebrate the launch of the Star Wars x adidas Originals Collection.
Done in the Chinese propaganda poster art style of “Nianhua” (New Year prints) these chubby babies called “pang wa wa” sure would have made the Star Wars saga extra-cuddly.
