“Cargo of Doom” (S202)
Anakin and Ahsoka intercept Cad Bane’s warship, hoping to recover the stolen Jedi Holocron.

There’s a simple rule to most movies: Amputees are bad guys.
Almost without fail, if there’s a guy with a hook for a hand or one who walks with a limp or has a glass eye, then he’s a bad dude. It’s an easy metaphor to slide into movies and it extends past just amputated limbs. A character wears some disfiguring mark or bears the burden of some horrible malady, and you leave the viewer with the idea that there’s a dark past explaining it or some bad moral compass that led to it.
Tattoos and robot limbs make for a strong reputation.

In fact, his common appreciation for Star Wars led him to working with his regular collaborator Damon Lindelof, not to mention the endless homages to the films in his various projects such as Lost and Fringe.

Behind The Scenes, In Pop Culture, Lucasfilm, The Movies | Permalink
Just about everyone reading this knows how innovative Lucasfilm has been since its founding in 1971. And much of that innovation was spurred by George Lucas’ desire to do and show things onscreen — specifically in his Star Wars movies — that had never been done before. In fact, he’s long been one of the leaders in cinema’s digital revolution.
But that’s not what I had in mind here. I want to talk about the stuff, the merchandise. Has that same sense of innovation carried through to at least some of the hundreds of thousands of items that have been produced worldwide over more than three decades?
Of course, in the toy businesses innovation means something a lot different than devising ways to film spaceship battles or digital picture and sound editing systems. There are problems of size, pricing, and scale, for example. Trying to take the latest cutting-edge technology developed for military or industrial use and making it “toyetic,” could be hazardous to a company’s health. Adapting proven technology through clever adaptation and design, however, is another matter.

As a voice on Star Wars: The Clone Wars, I’ve recorded several episodes about keeping the peace and fighting for the Republic. I pretend to be a character — a hero — fighting in a war and protecting the innocent from the Sith.
The key word in all of this is “pretend,” because the cast of The Clone Wars recently had the honor and privilege to do a USO tour last week at MCAS Miramar in San Diego, California, where we got to meet real-life heroes who are fighting to keep us safe everyday. The amazing staff for the USO and MCAS Miramar hosted us on-base where we got to stay and tour the facilities. We even got to go inside a real life Osprey!

What I’d like to write about I can’t. Two of the more interesting projects I’m working on still haven’t been announced. One should be announced in May; the other…who knows, but later than May. Stay tuned…
What I can say is that our video/doc crew is starting work on a sizzle piece for Jeffrey Brown’s heart-warming and funny Vader’s Little Princess; the Prequel Trilogy Storyboard book is nearly done — and set for a May release — and looks great; the next book in the Star Wars Art series is approaching final stage and I’ll show the designed pages to George Lucas in a couple of weeks; and the first designed pass of The Making of Return of the Jedi is also due in a couple of weeks. First pass is my favorite stage: images, captions, and text are all together and designed for the first time — but we can still make changes, correct errors, improve.
