Virtual Twitter Podrace Recap

StarWars.com Team | January 23, 2012

To celebrate the release of The Phantom Menace in 3D (out in theaters Feb. 10, 2012), we asked some of our favorite Star Wars fan groups, celebs and Clone Wars actors to rev their engines for our first ever Virtual Podrace on Twitter!

On Jan. 14, 2012, fans gathered together to watch and have fun participating in our virtual podrace. While some tweeted at their favorite racers, other fans went a step further and joined the virtual pit droid crew!

The Podracers included:
Cyborgturkey AKA Robot Chicken, TheForce.net, Darth Vader, Ben Quadinaros, Deathstar PR, 501st Legion, Fanboys director Kyle Newman, Boba Fett actor Daniel Logan, The Clone Wars actor James Arnold Taylor, and Team Unicorn members: Clare Grant, Michele Boyd, and Milynn Sarley. Plus special guest sniper, bounty hunter Aurra Sing voice actor from The Clone WarsJaime King!

Podracers tweeted as themselves, or as the characters they play in The Clone Wars. The @StarWars Twitter served as the commentator who called out play by play action by rolling dice to determine who went forward, who had engine problems, who got shot at by a bounty hunter, who sped ahead and who got sideswiped.

As the @StarWars Twitter tweeted play by play actions, the Podracers tweeted what was happening to them and the racers around them.

Everyone used the hashtag #Podrace at the end of their tweets so the Podrace could be followed by fans on Twitter who wanted to see the action.

There were a lot of explosions on the racetrack, surprise sniping from none other than Jaime King as Aurra Sing, a surprising romance with Darth Vader and plenty of hilarious comments from the racers!

And in the end, none other than The 501st Legion won the Podrace!

Our Virtual race was so popular that we even got the hashtag #Podrace to trend on Twitter! Yay us!

For those of you who missed all the action, here’s the play by play for you below. READ THE TWEETS FROM BOTTOM TO TOP to follow the race in its entirety.

Happy New Year 2012!

StarWars.com Team | December 31, 2011

The characters of Episode I get into the spirit of New Year’s courtesy of artist Stephen Hayford and DJ Jar Jar. Shall old acquaintances be forgot? Padmé — and Darth Maul, we think — certainly don’t appear to think so.

Happy New Year!

Star Wars Frugal Finds for 2011

Pete Vilmur | December 19, 2011

If you’re a Star Wars collector, there’s a pretty good chance you’ve had to pare back some of your hobby purchases in these economically challenging times. But there is still a great way to get that collecting fix on a budget – if you’re willing to explore the world of vintage collecting!

Not the world of mint-sealed-on-card vintage collecting, but the eccentric, exotic, eclectic world of ticket stubs, disco singles, foreign paperbacks and iron-on transfers from the ‘70s to ‘90s. Treasures abound in the under-$10 category of collecting, if you know where to look – and what to look for.

As an exercise in budget collecting – and a way to relive some great finds of the last year — I thought I’d go back through my collectible purchases of 2011 to find those pieces I felt were exceptionally good deals, even if they’re not what some would categorize as mainstream (which frankly makes them even more appealing!). Most of the following – with a few exceptions – were had for under $10, and required just a little bit of adventuring beyond the usual Star Wars collecting categories on eBay:

Jan 10: British Jar Jar Binks Pencil Case (£3.97)

Yeah, I know, first one out of the gate and it’s a Jar Jar collectible. This was actually the fourth piece I picked up after the new year, and just couldn’t resist those cool retro-style graphics that just scream galactic-groovy.

(See more 2011 frugal finds after the jump!)

Ewoks Photobomb Vacation Photos!

Bonnie Burton | September 26, 2011

While most of our parents let us believe in Santa, the Easter Bunny, Hanukkah Harry and the Tooth Fairy for as long as they could, not every many of them would photoshop them into your family vacation photos.

So when awesome “Dad of the Year” Anthony Herrera photoshopped imagines of Ewoks into his family’s vacation photos so his kids could continue believing that the beloved inhabitants of Endor really existed.

You can check out all his Yub Nubtastic photos here:
This is What Happens When Your Dad’s A Graphic Designer: Ewoks!

Anthony Herrera writes on his blog:

Being the Star Wars geek that I am (so is she), I told her that this is where the Ewoks live. She spent a good chuck of our time hiking keeping a lookout for any Ewoks. Coming home I can’t say that she wasn’t disappointed that we didn’t find any. I had to explain that they are extremely shy and hardly ever let anyone see them. After we got home, and after I had a little time alone with the photos, I told her I thought I saw something strange in a few pictures.

We viewed them on the TV to get a larger image. You can imagine how surprised and excited she was when we discovered that we didn’t see any Ewoks, but they saw us, and had certainly taken an interest in her and her little brother. Maybe I’m a little wrong for lying to her and falsifying the pictures, but I don’t care. She’ll never forget the time she spent in the big woods with Ewoks.

It’s A Water Stain!

UK Celebrates Star Wars Blu-Ray Release

StarWars.com Team | September 14, 2011

As the UK becomes the first country in the world to release Star Wars: The Complete Saga on Blu-ray, London will feel the Force like never before as droids, Stormtroopers, Jedi and the Sith invade the city in a week-long Star Wars spectacular culminating in the galactic transformation of the BT Tower into the World’s Largest Lightsaber.

The week commenced with a rude awakening from the Dark Side, as Darth Vader and a sinister fleet of Stormtroopers took to the streets in an Imperial March that will sent shivers down the spines of Londoners. The march began at St. James’ Park where they joined Changing of the Guards activities, before proceeding to HMV on Oxford Street to meet shoppers as they queued to get their hands on the highly anticipated Blu-ray release.

Star Wars actor Anthony Daniels (C-3PO in all six episodes) provided a lighter touch on Tuesday 13 September as he met fans at the grand opening of the HMV at the new Westfield Shopping Centre in Stratford, signing copies of Star Wars: The Complete Saga on Blu-ray.

On Thursday 15 September, from inside the exclusive star-studded launch party at the top of the BT Tower, Daniels will press a button lighting up the London skyline for one night only as it morphs into a Jedi Knight’s elegant weapon of choice, projecting a giant ‘blue ray’ of light from the top of the tower.

In the words of Darth Vader himself, “This will be a day long remembered” by Star Wars fans in the UK and across the world.

Be sure to follow more international news on the UK Facebook Page.
