George Takei Talks Clone Wars

Bonnie Burton | January 20, 2009

Starting this Friday, George Takei will be the voice of a new villain, Lok Durd, on Star Wars: Clone Wars. Takei recently chatted with Newsarama about his role on the animated series and how his voice hold some serious weight.

“They seem to think my voice is ‘fat.’ That it sounds ‘obese.’ In fact, grotesquely obese,” Takei laughed. “They showed me a drawing of the character I was supposed to voice and the first thing I thought was ‘Oh no! Not again!’ because I had done the voice of the First Ancestor in Disney’s Mulan. That was also a huge, enormously obese character. Lok Durd is also immensely obese.”

“Then when I saw the finished product I couldn’t help but realize it was amazingly well done. He’s just extremely flabby and loose he is. It made me wonder why I do all the sit ups, push ups and other exercises I really do when they think of that kind of character for my voice. I mean when Lok Durd moves, you can see his stomach, arms and legs, all his flesh, just jiggle. The animation is just amazing! Oh, the vanity of an actor!”

Jaime King Shows Off Her Clone Cred

Bonnie Burton | January 14, 2009

While promoting her new horror film My Bloody Valentine 3-D, actress Jaime King is quick to point out to the press that she’s not only a real geek, but she’s a big Star Wars fan as well. Here’s an excerpt from a recent interview she gave FEAR.net.

I heard you are a Star Wars geek.
I am. I am actually doing the new Clone Wars animated series right now. I’m excited about that.

Which voice are you?
I can’t tell you yet, but I play a few voices. I harassed [Clone Wars director] Dave Filoni until he gave me a part. I sent him emails, and I followed him around Comic-Con saying “Hire me. Hire me. Hire me. Hire me.”

You have been to Skywalker Ranch, right?
Yes, I have. That was the best. I have gone a few times – every excuse I can find to go there, I use. And then I cry when I have to go. It’s utopia for me. The idea of being out in nature, then having all these guys there, doing what they do creatively… being in that environment…. I feel like George Lucas has created something so universal, that speaks everyone’s language, that transcends time and age. It’s something everyone can relate to. I just think George Lucas is awesome.

Matt Wood Talks Clone Wars

StarWars.com Team | January 9, 2009

IF Film chatted recently with supervising sound editor and voice actor Matthew Wood about his sound design work on The Clone Wars TV series.

Talk about the process, who does what for sound?
We still divide the labor: One persona does dialogue. Another does foley, which is all the sound effects which as too specific to be found in our library, like footsteps and clothing movement and utensils and things like that. And then we have a sound effects person and a music editor. I think you have a lot more opportunities to create better sound design with the computers, ’cause you have everything data-based at your fingertips and also the manipulation of the process.

Falling in Love with Karen Traviss’ Clones

Bonnie Burton | October 31, 2008

It’s no secret that our friends over at the sci-fi blog io9.com dig Star Wars, but this is the first time one of them openly admitted to falling in love with clones — mainly from the books written by author Karen Traviss.

io9.com blogger Charlie Jane Anders writes:

I’ve watched a fair bit of the new Clone Wars TV show, but the world of the clones hasn’t ever felt as real to me as it has reading Traviss’ novels. In particular, her Republic Commando novels (which recently continued with Order 66) and her novelization of the Clone Wars movie are must-reads.

It’s her Republic Commando novels where Traviss really shines, showing clones having complex lives — complex in the sense of getting married, having kids, making plans, but also in the sense of having inner conflicts and problems. Based loosely on a first-person shooter game, Traviss’ novels build a set of characters that stay with you, including two lapsed (or lapsing) Jedi, who join up with a group of clone troopers that realizes the Republic and the Separatists are getting harder and harder to tell apart.

Why I Fell In Love With Karen Traviss’ Clones (io9.com)

Hey guys, look! It’s videogame news on the blog!

Brooks Brown | October 30, 2008

And it’s about time, isn’t it? To introduce myself, I go by Jedi Mudkip on here and around the forums. I’ll be keeping the blog up to date with the latest news around the web when it comes to Star Wars videogaming and any news related to that at all. Basically, you’ll be seeing a mish-mash of two types of info from me, and the two types I give you today!

First off, our beloved friends at io9.com decided to sing high praises of our soon to be released Clone Wars: Lightsaber Duels for the Nintendo Wii. Apparently, they believe it’ll be a must have, since they title the article
“New Clone Wars Game Shows You What Your Wii Was Made For”. That is what I would call a bit of high praise. They even post the latest trailer up, so be sure to check it out!

Secondly, I’ve got more of a call-to-arms then any news. With the recent releases of LittleBigPlanet, Spore, and other titles that thrive on user-generated content, it’s fairly certain that Star Wars will get caught up in the mix. As the first levels appear around the web from LittleBigPlanet, I’d love to get ahold of more. If you see one, be sure to toss it onto the LucasArts Forums, and we will get them posted up here. After all, they deserve the recognition!
