The Cinema Behind Star Wars: Jaws

Bryan Young | May 21, 2013

Steven Spielberg’s Jaws might be one of the most influential films in history. It set the stage as one of the first, true summer blockbusters in 1975, paving the way for the cultural hysteria Star Wars would cause just two years later. Add to the fact that it stands to this day as a fantastic, well-made film, and it’s no wonder that its influence has seeped into the world of film and has devotees among the elites of the entertainment industry. Bryan Singer’s production company is called “Bad Hat Harry” from a line on the beach in Jaws. Ain’t It Cool News’ best journalist, Quint, takes his name from Robert Shaw’s salty character. I once even accidentally proposed marriage to my wife in the middle of the USS Indianapolis speech. (True story, but one for a different time.)

Jaws is no less important to those who create Star Wars: The Clone Wars. The first time I realized there was a hardcore Jaws fan on the crew of The Clone Wars was watching the thirteenth episode of the third season. “Monster” served as our introduction to the now-iconic villain Savage Opress. The homage from Jaws was subtle and CG supervisor Joel Aron later told me that he thought I might have been the only person who noticed it. But in Jaws (and in a few other Spielberg pictures) there is a lovely shot of a night sky, a quiet moment, and a falling star streaks across the frame. The moment is repeated in loving memory in “Monster” and it brought a smile across the face of the film nerd inside of me.

Cut Lawquane: Clone. Farmer. Family Man. And Mandalorians!

Cut Lawquane
“The Deserter” (S210)
While searching for General Grievous on Saleucami, Rex meets a clone deserter.

  • We arrive on the surface of Saleucami, mentioned but not seen in “Grievous Intrigue” (S209).
  • This episode introduces Hardcase, Jesse, and Kix, clone troopers serving under Captain Rex in the 501st. They will have more prominent roles later in the series.
  • Cut Lawquane is just another example of a clone trooper expressing individuality. We first saw it in Season One with Slick being a traitor fighting for freedom for the clones.
  • As an expression of his own individuality, Captain Rex ultimately decides not to turn in Cut as a deserter.
  • Cut and Rex play dejarik, the holographic chess game seen in A New Hope.

Let Ahsoka Win!

Wow! I am so excited that Ahsoka made it to the Sixteen Strikes Back round! Thank you to everyone who voted last week but now she REALLY needs your help because this IS madness! The fact that Ahsoka is up against Chewbacca in this March Madness competition makes me a little mad because I LOVE Chewbacca! However, after having a chance to chat with Chewbacca at WonderCon this past weekend, we brokered a deal and agreed that Ahsoka should win this one ;o)

E-Mails Between Master & Padawan About Ahsoka’s Decision

By now, I’m sure you’ve all had a chance to digest what happened in the Season Five finale of Star Wars: The Clone Wars. It was very emotional and like I teased all season long, I’m sure you now have more questions than answers about what happened and what’s going to happen next.

Imagine being in my position, having to keep this a secret for so long! The suspense has been killing me! We recorded these last four episodes a year ago and I was definitely shocked when Dave Filoni told me that Ahsoka was going to walk away from the Jedi Order. It took me awhile to digest this news and I clearly remember, like it was yesterday, when it finally hit me that Ahsoka’s life and my life was changing forever. Dave Filoni sent me an email about recording the final scene with Matt Lanter. The word “final” hit me like a ton of bricks. We’ve been recording The Clone Wars for seven years now. I’ve grown extremely fond of my time in the recording studio, especially getting to record the scenes between Anakin and Ahsoka with Matt. They had become routine, commonplace and when I realized that the final scene of the season was the final scene with Ahsoka and Anakin, it broke my heart. I wasn’t sure if I was ready for that change.

Shining a Light on Shadow Conspiracy

About a year ago, Scholastic approached me with one of those offers you can’t refuse.

By then we knew Season Four of The Clone Wars would conclude with the return of Darth Maul, last seen tumbling — in halves, no less — into a pit on Naboo. But we didn’t know the tale would continue with Maul’s rescue by Savage Opress and his rematch with Obi-Wan Kenobi. Nor did we know Season Five would give us a four-episode arc in which Maul rallied the galactic underworld, recruiting Black Sun, Death Watch, the Hutts, and other criminals to his banner.

Scholastic’s question: Did I want to write a young-adult novelization of those episodes?
