Kaiser Chiefs Use the Force on Set

October 5, 2009

Behind the scenes hi-jinks on a music video set are always fun when you add a few Star Wars fanboy moments. Here the lads from the Kaiser Chiefs have a laugh while making their music video “Good Days Bad Days.” Watch them throw virtual logs and large prop rocks at each other while doing their best Ben Kenobi impressions. Bravo boys, bravo!

Force is Strong with Robbie Williams

September 16, 2009

It’s not every day you see a rock star walk around in his PJs carrying a lightsaber. Granted, that’s how I like to envision all my favorite celebs battling with lightsabers in their spare time.

So when the paparazzi caught British singer Robbie Williams walking around with a lightsaber I was pretty thrilled.

Now I just need to find him a Sith Lord to fight off.

The Daily Mail reports:

Robbie Williams appears to be relying on help from a higher Jedi power, as he makes his pop comeback. The singer channeled the force by carrying a Stars Wars style lightsaber, as he left the Meurice Hotel in Paris – commonly known as the City Of Lights – dressed in silk pyjamas and dressing gown. Wearing RayBan sunglasses and carrying a laptop it was a bizarre exit for the singer, who seems to have an unhealthy interest in all things science fiction or in his case science fact.

Lightsaber Opera?

April 24, 2009

If you prefer your opera to be less classical and more like Fifth Element, you might appreciate LA Opera’s production of Richard Wagner’s Die Walküre. This unique production uses props made of neon tubes which end up looking a lot like lightsabers.

Here’s a sum-up from a review by BeautifulDecay.com:

As you can see, this rendition of the opera kinda looks like what would happen if Clive Barker and George Lucas joined Heavens Gate. Neon, crazy costumes, smoke machines, these are all the makings of an entertaining night at the opera. There was even a mesh screen covering the stage that displayed projections during the performance.

The great thing about this show was that the reason people attended this show, for the timeless score and story of the Valkyrie, remained untouched, and is just as phenomenal as it must’ve been at its 1870 inception.

I Wanna Be Your Sith Lord? Sci-Fi Disco!

April 24, 2009

What is it about sci-fi and disco/techno that make them go so well together? In this 1981 video to “I Wanna Be Your Lover (Discoring)” by Italian disco sensation La Bionda — brothers Carmelo and Michelangelo play dueling keyboards while wearing matching glowy white outfits.

However, the real gem of this video is the animated film playing in the background featuring the brothers battling flying space cats and a certain villian who looks like a giant robotic Darth Vader wielding a lightsaber — all so they can catch the eye of a ghostly lady in white. Plus, the song is downright catchy. I have a feeling Gary Neuman would be proud.

George Lucas Wants You to Rock

January 12, 2009

Itching to start up your own awesome band? Maybe buying a brand new Gibson guitar signed by George Lucas will motivate you to become a rock god. Lucky for you, George Lucas joins other icons, artists, and musicians to raise money with a special upcoming Guitar Gala to help keep the legendary Phoenix building stay standing and offering music and art programs to the citizens of Petaluma, Calif.

The Guitar Gala will feature approximately 20 guitars (donated by the Gibson Foundation), each designed and customized by local and nationally recognized visual artists.

In additon to filmmaker George Lucas, other artists committed to the program include Devo, Seth Green of Robot Chicken, Stan Lee of Marvel Comics, Les Claypool of Primus, Jack Haye, Chris Clark (of Motown fame), Michael Garlington, Chris Jehly, Anna Oneglia, Lia May-Bird, Ricky Watts, Jared Powell, Josh Staples of the New Trust, and Jason Jenkins. The event will feature a live Internet auction of the guitars as well as a silent auction.

The entire proceeds from the Guitar Gala will be dedicated to supporting the free-of-charge after-school music, theater and arts programs for at-risk youth of the North Bay — as well as to help preserve the historic Phoenix Theater, which has served as an important performing arts venue for over 100 years — hosting a diverse group of artists ranging from Enrico Caruso to Louis Armstrong, from Carlos Santana, Sublime, and Metallica to Green Day and Hilary Duff.

The gala takes place Feb. 27-28, 2009 at the Petaluma Phoenix Center in Petaluma, Calif.

Holiday Special Filk Song

November 19, 2008

With the 30th anniversary of the Star Wars Holiday Special, it seems some fans have a few things to sing about when it comes to Lumpy, Malla, Bea Arthur, Art Carney and the rest of the cast. Singer/songwriter Shawn Moynihan from the band Save Pluto wrote this musical tribute to the special, to be sung to the tune of “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Heart’s Club Band.”

It was 30 years ago today
We didn’t have a VCR to play
George had given in to CBS
Who tried to do Star Wars with less.

But it didn’t take too long to see
What a horror it would come to be
Holiday Special, aww, you were so bad.

Wookiees talking with a Shriiwook sound
No subtitles to be found
Everything was going awfully wrong
Bea Arthur singing cantina songs.

But that night they introduced you to
A bounty hunter in green and blue
Holiday Special, aww, you were so bad.

Malla cooking with a bantha stew
Art Carney brought a gift or two
Itchy fantasies to kids’ dismay
Diahann Carroll, where are you today?

Lumpy watching animated Fett
Harvey Korman took one in the head
Holiday Special, aww, you were so bad.

Now Chewie made it home in time
For a Life Day chorus line
And people, if we’ve learned a thing,
Don’t let Carrie Fisher sing
Thank the Force that you will never see
A Lucasfilm release on DVD
Holiday Special, aww, you were so bad.
