Star Wars Halloween at the White House

This Halloween, President Obama and the First Lady hung out with Chewbacca, Ahsoka Tano, and the 501st stormtroopers as they handed out candy to 2,000 trick-or-treaters and military families who were invited to the festive party.

An odd cast of figures wandered around the North Lawn, including skeletons playing musical instruments, walking trees and Star Wars characters.

The president, dressed in casual clothes, was one of the few not in costume. Even Obama’s press secretary, Robert Gibbs, was dressed as Darth Vader, the Star Wars villain.

President Obama-Wan Kenobi!

We’ve blogged before about how many Star Wars fans think President Obama is secretly a Jedi Knight. But this is the first time we’ve been handed photographic proof of Obama showing off his Force powers.

Sith Lords and bounty hunters beware!

According to Newsweek:

Here’s President Obama dueling with, yes, a Star Wars lightsaber at an event held this afternoon at the White House to promote Chicago’s bid for the 2016 Olympics.

Darth Biden? Chewie Cookie Wookiee?

We’ve seen President Obama as Admiral Ackbar, as Chewbacca and as a Jedi Knight, but this is the first we’ve seen Vice President Joe Biden as Darth Maul.

Starwars.com chats with artist Toby Lunchbreath about his portrait of Darth Biden, as well as the Cookie Monster as Chewbacca.

What was the back story about your Darth Biden art piece?

Darth Biden is a part of a series of cartoon poster concepts intended to help out the struggling right-wing street art movement. I don’t share their politics but I really hate to see bad art, so I thought they could use some suggestions.

So does that make President Obama — Count Dooku?

Well this was all precipitated by the Obama-as-Joker street “art” that got posted up around LA and then mimicked elsewhere, so it appears that Barack’s evil twin has already been defined. Dooku is tall and well-groomed though, so it’s really not that bad of a comparison.

Why do you think Star Wars and politics mix so well in satire?

Star Wars represents the dominant cultural myth of our generation, with clear themes of good, evil, and furry cuteness. Those images are easy to work with because we’ve already got the emotional triggers hardwired into our heads.

Conservatives Want to Talk Star Wars

The love for science fiction isn’t limited to political affiliation. Conservatives love to talk about Star Wars, Star Trek, Doctor Who and more; and now they can read all the sci-fi news and rumors without any liberal bias with Republibot.

Republibot describes itself as “the science fiction site for people who aren’t Drooling Kneejerk Liberals!”

Why a conservative SF website? Because pretty much all the ones out there right now are extremely hard left. In fact, as a genre Science Fiction itself is generally rather leftist, which is not something we here at Republibot take issue with. In our minds, Science Fiction is all about asking questions and being open minded to the answers. Sometimes the answers are reassuring, sometimes they’re disturbing, and sometimes there are no answers at all, but the point is to keep asking the questions.

Are Conservatives the New Rebel Scum?

When you think of the Rebels fighting against the evil Empire of Star Wars, you might be quick to compare liberal Democrats as the Rebels and conservative Republicans in the role of Darth Vader, the Emperor and the rest of the Empire.

However, the Conservative website American Daily Review thinks we all have it backwards. Dr. Tony Magana suggests that it’s the Republicans who best represent the ideals of the Rebel Alliance.

Dr. Magana writes:

The 1977 classic movie, Star Wars, portrayed an epic struggle between a righteous outnumbered few (Rebel Alliance) against a much stronger dominant government (Empire). The now well known story tells how a small group of activists can effect change by adhering to their principals as a source of power and focusing their efforts on the identifiable vulnerability of their adversary. A useful analogy may be drawn to the current situation of contemporary conservative activism.

Obama More Powerful than Skywalker?

President Barack Obama has achieved superstar status complete with a comic book cover hanging out with Spider-Man. But is he an actual hero? George Lucas thinks so. Darth Vader better watch his back.

Yahoo News reports:

Star Wars creator George Lucas was in Washington Wednesday night for the Ford’s Theatre reopening celebration where both he and screen legend Sidney Poitier were being honored with the Ford Theatre Society’s Lincoln medal in a ceremony attended by President Barack Obama, a Lincoln aficionado.

Lucas says that, in a contest between Luke Skywalker and Obama, our 44th president wins hands down — even without the lightsaber.

Obama Action Figure Duels Vader

We’re not exactly sure if this is an officially-licensed Presidential action figure or not, but the fact that it’s posed with none other than Darth Vader makes it too irresistible — not to mention timely — not to mention here. Lucas must have been on to something when he singled out Obama as a modern-day hero-in-the-making last June.

Hologram News Coverage from CNN

November 5, 2008

During last night’s election CNN unveiled their hologram technology to beam in correspondents Star Wars-style. Think of Anderson Cooper as R2-D2 and Obama supporter and musician Wil.I.Am as Princess Leia (minus the hair buns) and you get the idea. As Wil.I.Am says, “I’m being beamed to you like it’s Star Wars and stuff.”

Cooper and Wil.I.Am weren’t the only ones using the holograms to chit chat about the election. CNN new correspondent Wolf Blitzer also gave it a go.
