Obama More Powerful than Skywalker?

Bonnie Burton | February 13, 2009

President Barack Obama has achieved superstar status complete with a comic book cover hanging out with Spider-Man. But is he an actual hero? George Lucas thinks so. Darth Vader better watch his back.

Yahoo News reports:

Star Wars creator George Lucas was in Washington Wednesday night for the Ford’s Theatre reopening celebration where both he and screen legend Sidney Poitier were being honored with the Ford Theatre Society’s Lincoln medal in a ceremony attended by President Barack Obama, a Lincoln aficionado.

Lucas says that, in a contest between Luke Skywalker and Obama, our 44th president wins hands down — even without the lightsaber.

Yoda to De-stress Returning Soldiers

StarWars.com Team | February 13, 2009

Soldiers returning from their time fighting overseas may be looking toward a tiny, green Jedi for guidance. Ottawa is turning to the wisdom enshrined in Jedi master Yoda in counselling its soldiers on how to overcome war-related stress.

The green, pint-sized character’s advice is part of the video script the Canadian government is currently studying, through which soldiers returning from Afghanistan will be given tips on coping with combat zone stress, reports The Globe and Mail, Toronto.

Like Yoda did in the George Lucas production, Canadian soldiers will be told to reach deep within themselves and reclaim their mental health. “Yoda was right, if you believe you will achieve,” the script counsels the soldiers.

The video is currently being shot at the Canadian Forces’ base of Valcartier, and will feature different techniques for de-stressing, including “disidentification.” Under the latter, the script has a soldier saying: “There is anger in me but I am not that anger, I am more than that.”

The Force Unleashed Wins WGA Award for Best Writing!

StarWars.com Team | February 8, 2009

When LucasArts set out on the trailblazing journey of creating The Force Unleashed, they had multiple objectives in mind. One of the key ones was to tell a compelling story worthy of the Star Wars saga in the hitherto unexplored territory between Episode III and Episode IV. This story — the epic saga of Darth Vader’s  Secret Apprentice, was recognized for excellence yesterday.

New Mustafar-like Planet Discovered?

Bonnie Burton | February 4, 2009

Astronomers using the COROT space telescope have discovered what may be the smallest extrasolar planet (measuring less than twice the size of Earth) orbiting a sun-like star. The planet (seen as that block dot in the above photo) sounds a little like Mustafar, minus the Jedi duel.

One big difference in the newfound planet compared to Earth: COROT-Exo-7b is located very close to its star, orbiting once every 20 hours. Its temperature is so high, ranging from 1,832 to 2,732 degrees Fahrenheit that the researchers say the exoplanet could be covered in lava or water vapor.

The density of the planet is still under investigation, though scientists say it may be rocky like Earth and covered in liquid lava. COROT-Exo-7b may also belong to a class of planets that are thought to be made up of water and rock in almost equal amounts. Given the high temperatures measured, the planet would likely be a very hot and humid place.

TFU Gets WGA Writing Nods; QFT, BRB, BBQ.

StarWars.com Team | January 13, 2009

When people think of video games, they usually think of button-mashy, time-draining bits of visual flair. Usually, the writing does not live up the fun of the game. I mean, really, stomping turtles isn’t exactly a brilliant metaphor for world suffering or the trials of a hard life. It’s just stomping turtles, Freud.

But some video games can have those deep undertones. Gamers sat up and took notice with Bioshock in 2007, amazed at the story within the game. They weren’t alone. The Writers Guild of America were so moved that in 2008 they created an award for Best Writing within a Video Game. Dead Head Fred won for the 2007 span of releases – deservedly so, in my humble opinion. For the 2008 year, things hit a bit closer to home.

LucasArts is quite proud to have received praise from the Writer’s Guild. Regardless of what the critics said about The Force Unleashed, they all agreed the story is brilliant. And why not? Expanding the storyline of our beloved mythology, blazing ahead into previously unexplored dark times – who wouldn’t love that – gamers were hooked by the story as well as the brilliantly-crafted voicework and well-directed cinematics.

So, we extend congratulations to our friends Haden Blackman, Shawn Pitman, John Stafford, and Cameron Suey. Give them some love – they worked incredibly hard on the game and deserve every bit of honor they are given.

Chewbacca the Pug Saves the Day

Bonnie Burton | January 5, 2009

Just as Chewbacca showed his bravery throughout the Star Wars, a pet pug with the same name saved his family from a dangerous fire this holiday season.

The fire started in the basement at about 8 a.m. Christmas morning and thanks to Chewbacca, a 10-week old Pug everyone was able to get out of the house unharmed.
