Star Wars in Save Pinball movie

StarWars.com Team | April 8, 2008

Long before first-person shooters, Wii and arcade games, there was a little coin-eating game called pinball. For those of us who fancied ourselves as the next pinball wizard a new documentary about its decline in popularity (and sales) is an interesting look at a lost segment of gaming.

IGN reviews TILT: The Battle to Save Pinball which chronicles America’s largest manufacturer of pinball games — Williams — and its last ditch attempt to save the company with “Pinball 2000.” As the tale unfolds, TILT makes a mention of the role the Star Wars franchise played during the last moments of pinball.

Insider interviews with some of Williams’ designers give insight into the design process and technology behind “Pinball 2000″ as well as the classic models of the past several decades. The most interesting part comes during the final section, discussing Williams’ deal with Lucasfilm to distribute Star Wars: Episode 1 themed Pinball 2000 cabinets and how executive and creative interfere affected the quality of the final product and quite possibly the fate of the company in general.

Bonnie Burton | March 21, 2008

Wired magazine interviews George Lucas, Whitley Streiber, Harlan Ellison, Cory Doctorow and others about how Arthur C. Clarke influenced their own sci-fi books, comics and films.

Here’s what George Lucas had to say:

George Lucas, filmmaker
Arthur C. Clarke was a great inspiration to me. The breadth of his imagination has yet to be equaled. He will be missed, but I’m grateful that his legacy will live on through his visionary novels and his groundbreaking work on 2001.

Ray Park as Snake Eyes

StarWars.com Team | March 21, 2008

USA Today and /film update today with the first images of Ray “Darth Maul” Park as Snake Eyes in the upcoming G.I. Joe live action movie. As part of a generation essentially sculpted by the ’80s toylines of Hasbro, you’ll excuse me if I spend the rest of my morning on the floor of my office playing with my toys. Congrats, Ray!

ShoWest: Get Smart

Bonnie Burton | March 14, 2008

Our Starwars.com ShoWest coverage of the Warner Bros. “Big Picture” presentation continues with a funny introduction of the upcoming Get Smart comedy, directed by Peter Segal. In the film Steve Carell plays Maxwell Smart, AKA Agent 86 for CONTROL, who battles the forces of KAOS with the more-competent Agent 99 played by Anne Hathaway at his side. The stellar cast also includes Masi Oka, Dwayne “Don’t Call Him The Rock” Johnson, Alan Arkin, Bill Murray and Terence Stamp.

Director Peter Segal and actors Steve Carell and Anne Hathaway introduced a short clip of the film in which Maxwell Smart manages to be mistaken for a terrorist on a plane while on a mission, only to misuse a rather cool gadget in order to escape. Not to give too much away, but the segment serves as a rather hilarious PSA on why you shouldn’t try new James Bond-esque weapons in a tiny airplane bathroom.

StarWars.com Team | February 4, 2008

Word out of Variety this weekend is that Star Wars-alum Joe Johnston has been picked to replace Mark Romanek as director of the forthcoming Wolfman, slated for a 2009 release from Universal. Benicio Del Toro, Anthony Hopkins and Emily Blunt will star.

Star Wars fans should know Johnston as one of the key concept designers for the original Star Wars trilogy, serving as Visual Effects Art Director at Industrial Light & Magic for the three films and other classics such as Raiders of the Lost Ark. Among his often cited Star Wars creds is the development of Boba Fett. Lesser known, for some reason, is his Adventures of Teebo storybook.

He’s also directed Honey I Shrunk the Kids, Jumanji, Hidalgo, October Skies, and the Princeton episode of The Adventures of Young Indiana Jones.
