Cheney Doesn’t Mind Vader Nickname

StarWars.com Team | October 22, 2007

This from the Wall Street Journal Online:

[Vice President Dick Cheney] displayed a flash of humor in acknowledging that his imperious manner has earned him the nickname “Darth Vader” in some quarters. “I’ve been asked if that nickname bothers me, and the answer is, no,” he said. “After all, Darth Vader is one of the nicer things I’ve been called recently.”

Tina Fey as Princess Leia?

StarWars.com Team | October 19, 2007

As previously reported, Tina Fey — former SNL head writer, and currently the star and creator of the hit comedy “30 Rock” — is a Star Wars fan.

In the October 2007 issue of Geek Monthly magazine (available at newsstands and online), Fey mentions her brief stint as Princess Leia on “Saturday Night Live.”

“I was C-3PO for Halloween a couple of times. Once when I was nine. I’ll do it again when I’m 40. One time I did a sketch that got cut from SNL where I was going to play Princess Leia, my dream come true. That was the funniest thing ever just because putting that costume on — and I didn’t look like her or anything — but you put that costume and that wig on and nerds go bananikers. People were just staring at me in the hall, all these extras and background people and nerds wanted to talk to me all the sudden. Guys have a real weird thing for that outfit.”

In fact Princess Leia herself — Carrie Fisher — will guest star on “30 Rock” as writer Rosemary Howard for an upcoming episode that will air Oct. 25, 2007.

Darth Vader Gift on “The Daily Show”

StarWars.com Team | October 11, 2007

Lynne Cheney, the wife of Vice President Dick Cheney, appeared on “The Daily Show,” Oct. 10. to talk about her new memoir, Blue Sky, No Fences and about life in the White House. But before the interview got started, she brought with her a special gift for host Jon Stewart — a Darth Vader doll.

“It’s a special present for you…it’s an old family heirloom,” Cheney laughs.
“Is there a microphone in it?” Stewart jokes.
“No, but it’s signed on the bottom…” Cheney says.
“Is that true?” Stewart asks.
“… in invisible ink,” Cheney continues.
“It’s lovely, thank you very much,” Stewart says. “I’ll keep that….”
“As a nice reminder,” Cheney answers.
“Yes!” Stewart laughs.

Wil Wheaton Talks Star Wars Toys

StarWars.com Team | October 10, 2007

Actor, blogger and author Wil Wheaton chats with Xeni Jardin on BoingBoingTV about his love for all things geeky. In his latest book The Happiest Days of Our Lives, Wheaton talks about his favorite Star Wars action figures in the chapter “Blue Light Special.”

“It’s a story about going to K-Mart with my mom when I was 8 or 9. I was very, very young. My mom took my sister to the cosmetics department and my brother and I got to go to the toy department. Back then I remember staring at this infinite wall of action figures and this particular story is this dilemma I think a lot of us had when we were that age — should I save my money for something really cool like the Millennium Falcon or should I buy something right now because I could have it. And the story is about how I’m not able to make a smart choice and save my money and I end up getting something that I really regret.”

Obi-Wan Honors Bomb Expert in Basra

StarWars.com Team | October 9, 2007

Star Wars actor Ewan McGregor arrived in Basra, southern Iraq, to present a Pride of Britain award — given by the Record’s sister paper, the Mirror –to Staff Sergeant Michelle Cunningham. Despite the risks, Ewan was so impressed by the bravery of Britain’s only female bomb disposal officer in Iraq that he was determined to present the award to her himself.

Michelle, 32, was nominated for the Mirror award by the Army for “displaying complete disregard for her personal safety” by single-handedly extinguishing a fire at an explosives factory in Middle Wallop, Hampshire, last year. Firefighters had decided it was too dangerous to go inside.

Ewan, 36, said: “I’m just so amazed by Michelle and her unit’s courage. “She’s fantastic. I would never have the guts to do what she does. Most people, and I’m one of them, would run a million miles from a bomb. But Michelle actually walks towards them and makes them safe. Amazing.”

Vader Manages Rock Band

StarWars.com Team | October 9, 2007

While the Sex Pistols had Malcolm McLaren to keep Johnny Rotten and Sid Vicious in line, looks like Welsh rock band Losing Sun has Darth Vader to contend with on the tour bus.

Actor David Prowse (who played Darth Vader in the Original Trilogy), has agreed to manage the band.

“If my friends had said to me years ago that Darth Vader is going to manage our band I would have never believed it,” laughed drummer Jayce Lewis. “He’s brought stacks of experience and enthusiasm to the band and is so driven,” he added.
