Galactic Senate on 30 Rock

StarWars.com Team | January 9, 2009

If you caught this week’s episode “Senor Macho Solo” in Season 3 of 30 Rock, then you may have noticed some awesome flirting saturated with Star Wars references between Liz Lemon (played by Tina Fey) and a possible love interest Stuart played by actor Peter Dinklage.

Stuart: It’s my fault for wanting to hear all about your job, it’s just so much more interesting than the UN.

Liz Lemon: Oh come on, really? You have all those different languages and the costumes and that big meeting room; it must be like working in the Galactic Senate in Star Wars.

Stuart: They are similar. We are also very concerned about the growing influence of the Sith lords.

Vote for Fett, Indy and Vader for Toughest List

Bonnie Burton | January 6, 2009

For the next several weeks MTV.com will be fully exploring the toughest of the tough, all in the name of crowning the Greatest Badass of All Time. Through lists, your votes and analysis, they’ll whittle down the contenders, leading up to the big announcement at New York’s upcoming Comic-Con. As usual, Boba Fett, Indiana Jones, Han Solo and Darth Vader make the list.

EXCERPT:

Boba Fett: A one-man band of badassness, this mysterious Star Wars bounty hunter wasn’t so much about what we saw him do, as the damage he had the potential to inflict. A carbine rifle, a rocket pack, a grenade launcher, armed-to-the-gills wrist gauntlets and so much more, all crammed into a suit of Mandalorian armor that makes Captain America’s shield look like Silly Putty. Will George Lucas’ repeated need to demystify Fett (the prequels, the special editions) come back to haunt Han Solo’s hunter? Or will he return to his ’80s heyday?

Indiana Jones, Han Solo, Rick Deckard: It’s the ultimate Harrison Ford face-off, and since our survey will also include the ’90s, we’ll throw Jack Ryan into the mix later. When Reaganomics reigned, however, it was Ford’s characters from Blade Runner and the Star Wars and Indiana Jones films that gave us hope for a better, more badass existence. Decades later, we now know that Han dances with Ewoks, Deckard was likely a replicant, and Indy was escaping nuclear bombs in refrigerators well into his 60s. Will such blemishes hinder their badass campaigns?

Actor Brian Blessed — best known for his role as Prince Vultan in the camp classic movie Flash Gordon — also voiced The Phantom Menace character Boss Nass. In his current events celebrity game show Have I Got News For You, Blessed treated his audience and guests with a rather amusing Boss Nass impression as he explained how to save gas while driving.

For those fans who can never get enough Star Wars gags in Adult Swim’s hit TV show Robot Chicken, here’s another. Colbert Urges Nation to Buy Lightsabers

Bonnie Burton | December 3, 2008

Not to be out-geeked by The Daily Show host Jon Stewart, on the Dec. 1 episode of The Colbert Report, host Stephen Colbert wagged his finger at the National Toy Hall of Fame curator Christopher Bench for inducting the stick into the museum and called it “all natural, the perfect price.”

Colbert says of Bench:

Wrong! Free is never the perfect price! Retailers depend on holiday toy sales but thanks to Mr. Bench here, parents are gonna realize that sticks literally grow on trees. He makes me so mad I want to poke him in the eye, with not a stick, but a Star Wars Force FX authentic replica lightsaber. (Waves lightsaber around.) Just $79.99!

Agent Olivia “Han Solo” Dunham?

Bonnie Burton | December 3, 2008

It’s no secret that director J.J. Abrams is a lifelong Star Wars fan. Star Wars references have popped up on his show Lost, so it was only a matter of time before they appeared in his latest endeavor, Fringe.

In this week’s episode called “Safe,” F.B.I. agent Olivia Dunham reveals to the character Peter Bishop the nickname she had in boarding school.

Olivia: “I guess I’ve always just enjoyed being on my own. Even when I was in boarding school they used to call me Han.”

Peter: “As in Solo? That’s cute. At least you had a nickname.”

Jon Stewart and His C-3PO Bobblehead

Bonnie Burton | December 2, 2008

Last night on The Daily Show, show host Jon Stewart did his share to talk about Black Friday by rubbing it in our faces that he beat out holiday shoppers to a C-3PO bobblehead.

He’s also a tad worried about the recession, now that he claims to have bought a lifesize Millennium Falcon made of LEGOs.

Droid Billboard Art Promotes Nutrition

StarWars.com Team | December 2, 2008

(photo from San Francisco Bay Area Murals: Communities Create Their Muses 1904-1997 by Timothy W. Drescher)

When Star Wars debuted in theaters everywhere in 1977, fans everywhere couldn’t get enough of Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, Chewbacca, Han Solo, Darth Vader and the droid duo of C-3PO and R2-D2. Fans paid tribute to their favorite characters with filk songs, comics, fanzines and street art.

During this time, San Francisco artist and muralist Xavier Viramontes joined other artists from the Galeria de la Raza to send positive messages to neighboor kids living in the Mission District. They had become frustrated with all the billboards promoting cigarettes and liquor, so they “appropriated” one of the street-level billboards on Bryant Street by painting over it with positive messages for the community. Over the years the billboard has been home to murals painted by both local and guest artists.

In 1977, Viramontes painted his “Avoid Junk Food” billboard which featured none other than the helpful droids C-3PO and R2-D2 as they explained which healthy foods are good sources of minerals and vitamins.

The billboard has since be repainted, but you can learn more about it and other murals in the book San Francisco Bay Area Murals: Communities Create Their Muses 1904-1997 by Timothy W. Drescher, published by Pogo Press.

Clone Wars Thanksgiving Special? Nope.

StarWars.com Team | November 24, 2008

Whenever I think about my favorite shows and their seasonal specials, I always smile to myself that I’m not the only one who has the holiday spirit. Who can forget the Native American ghost invasion plot of the Thanksgiving episode of Buffy: The Vampire Slayer? Or the Christmas Special of The Venture Bros. where everything that could go wrong at a cocktail party — when you invite super villains — does?

So leave it up to io9.com’s columnist Graeme McMillan to pitch Thanksgiving specials not only for Star Wars: The Clone Wars, but also for Heroes, Knight Rider, Lost, and Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles.

EXCERPT:

Star Wars: The Clone Wars
We journey to Kashyyyk, where the Wookiees are celebrating their annual Life Day. Planning to convince the Wookiees to join the Republic in their struggles against the evil Count Dooku and his seperatists, Padme gets captured and has to be rescued by Anakin, Ahsoka and a brand new Jedi that we’ve never seen before. Who looks like a turkey. After a brave and ferocious battle, Padme is rescued, but the turkey Jedi sacrifices himself in the process. The end of the episode sees the Wookiees and our heroes gathered around a great feast, as Yoda reminds everyone about the brave sacrifices that have been made so that everyone could be there that day, and says something about “Thanks, we must be giving on this day.” And then R2 makes that farting noise and everyone laughs.
