When you become a parent, your whole life changes.
I know — that’s the understatement of the century, right? But I’m constantly surprised at how becoming a mother changed my filter of the world around me, and especially changed the way I view media now.
For example, as a relatively new mom, (my daughter is three and a half years old), I now see the Star Wars trilogies in a completely different light, and wonder about things I never ever considered in a million previous viewings.

This Is Madness: The Star Wars Character Tournament has featured many intriguing storylines, and with today’s start of Duel of the Eights, the conference semi-finals, more epic battles are coming.
Vaunted Jedi Master Yoda takes on Obi-Wan Kenobi today, but has already defeated two tough opponents, including his pupil, Luke Skywalker, a.k.a. the galaxy’s new hope. The Emperor’s “little green friend” is very satisfied with his victory, it seems.

Director J.J. Abrams will be directing Star Wars: Episode VII, but he’s been a lifelong fan of the saga. In fact, his common appreciation for Star Wars led him to working with his regular collaborator Damon Lindelof, not to mention the endless homages to the films in his various projects such as Lost and Fringe.

Thirty years ago today, Variety magazine posted a full-page advertisement from George Lucas congratulating Steven Spielberg for surpassing Star Wars at the box office with E.T. the Extraterrestrial. The ad, featuring an illustration by artist Kazo Sano, is a fitting tribute from one friend to another — playful, honest, celebratory. Everything that makes E.T. and Star Wars special.
Many years later, after both films had been re-released theatrically, Star Wars would once again surpass E.T.. Today, Star Wars holds the number two all-time domestic box office gross record (adjusted for inflation) and E.T. ranks fourth. Whatever their ranks, both films continue to endure as classics.
Please join all of us here at Lucasfilm in saluting E.T. the Extraterrestrial, a true masterpiece.
