Dragon*Con Star Wars Costume Contest: Where do we go from here?

DCON2012-SWCC-9

If there’s one thing that’s central to the Dragon*Con experience, it’s costumes. You can’t wave a stick in any of the host hotels without whacking a costumed attendee. (Please, don’t wave sticks at cons with the intent of whacking people.) And because the con is so huge, most tracks have their own costume contests, in addition to the con-wide hall costume contest and the Dragon*Con Masquerade. Star Wars is no exception, but this year was unique because Dragon*Con fell right on the heels of Celebration VI. That meant that some people had opted to attend the less frequent Star Wars con instead of the annual con, and some people attended both, but were too wiped out from CVI to compete their costumes again. This resulted in a slightly smaller field for the Dragon*Con contest. Even with a smaller group, there was no shortage of variety and creativity.

SWCVI: Closing Ceremony

Closing Ceremony 1

The time has come to bid farewell to Celebration VI!  And what better way to start the closing ceremony than with a little dancing and singing?  In addition to a dance off between Jedi and Sith, Mark Daniel got the crowd to sing along to his Star Wars version of, “Feeling Hoth, Hoth, Hoth.”  Even though it was the end of our SWCVI experience, there was a lot of energy and excitement amongst the crowd.

Days Three & Four of Star Wars Celebration VI were literally filled from beginning to the very end of each day (and night) with action for members of the 501st Legion.  By day, the convention center floor saw our full attention; at night, everyone witnessed the firepower – the stamina – we bring to keep the celebrating going.

SWCVI: The Clone Wars with Dave Filoni and Joel Aron

The Clone Wars is such a big deal that there were two Season 5 preview panels, one on Saturday and one on Sunday, at Star Wars Celebration VI.  I love the show, so I went to both.  On Saturday attendees were treated to an amazing surprise.  GEORGE LUCAS SHOWED UP!  Yes, the creator himself briefly came out and talked some Clone Wars with Supervising Director Dave Filoni and VFX Supervisor Joel Aron.

SWCVI: The Maul Within

It was a no-brainer for Sam Witwer to agree to playing Darth Maul on Star Wars: The Clone Wars. He said yes to Dave Filoni even though he wasn’t entirely sure how he would play the character or even how the sliced and diced Sith Lord would make a realistic comeback.

Maul wasn’t Witwer’s first foray into the Star Wars universe. He voiced Starkiller and Palpatine in The Force Unleashed, and he dipped into the Dark side of the Force as the Son in the Mortis trilogy during season three of The Clone Wars. He actually tied some of the Son’s dialogue to the mad ravings and mutterings of Maul when he is first found in his cave.

SWCVI: Behind the Scenes of the Cantina

On Saturday at Star Wars Celebration Pablo Hidalgo and creature expert Tom Spina hosted a panel that focused on the aliens of the cantina seen in the original Star Wars movie.  They were joined on stage by Nick Maley who was part of the UK creature team and Jon Berg who was part of the US creature team.  Pablo said, “We conspired to create a panel that would be the ultimate panel that we would want to see if we were attending Celebration and I think we have come up with something special.”

SWCVI: Why We Love The Prequels Panel

I grew up with Star Wars, but unlike a lot of fans, I actually started with The Phantom Menace. I was eight years old in 1999, and the experience of seeing that movie did more to propel me into watching the Original Trilogy over and over again than any marketing campaign ever could. I was, quite simply, hooked. The releases of Episodes II and III completed my viewing experience, but before then, I had The Phantom Menace and its huge array of established plot lines to ponder. Starting from the beginning and then jumping ahead gave me a glimpse of the Empire and the Jedi-less galaxy that Palpatine would establish, but it wasn’t until first 2002 and finally 2005 that I would have my many “How did we get there?” questions answered.
