WonderCon Recap: Star Wars Puppet Craft Tutorial

Bonnie Burton | April 14, 2011

There’s something magical about kids crafting puppets out of paper bags, construction paper, googly eyes and glitter…especially if they happen to be Star Wars puppets!

For the first time ever at WonderCon, I hosted a Star Wars Craft Tutorial on how to make Star Wars bag puppets. I did a similar Star Wars puppet tutorial at last year’s Bay Area Maker Faire, but this was a packed room of kids and their parents!

Armed with construction paper, scissors, glue, colored markers, glitter and of course, googly eyes — kids and adults alike made some very creative bag puppets of their favorite Star Wars characters including Yoda, Chewbacca, Princess Leia, Darth Vader, R2-D2, Admiral Ackbar, Rancor, Tauntaun, Clone trooper, the Emperor, and more!

You can learn how to make your own Admiral Sackbar bag puppet here.

Below are some of our favorite puppets! May the Craft Be With You!

MythBusters Grant Imahara Inducted into the 501st

StarWars.com Team | April 7, 2011

Amongst the cosplayers, droids, and comic book fans attending this year’s WonderCon in San Francisco, California, MythBusters Build Team member Grant Imahara was inducted as a 501st Legion Honorary Member by the Golden Gate Garrison (with special help from the Southern California Garrison.)

Grant is well-known on Discovery Channel’s hit show Mythbusters, but he started at THX then went on to make some amazing sets, droids and props at Industrial Light and Magic as a modelmaker. His robot-building skills are legendary — not only for his work on R2-D2 alongside ILM’s Don Bies, but for the lovable Energizer Bunny, his intimidating fighting robots, and his latest creation of first robotic talk show sidekick Geoff Petersen, for Craig Ferguson on The Late Late Show.

In 2004, the ILM rock stars were asked to compete in Junkyard Mega-Wars: At The Movies. Grant and his ILM team made a gigantic, flame-throwing R2-D2, and of course won the competition.

You can see that awesome R2-D2 in action here:

Grant has also been featured over the years on StarWars.com for Putting Star Wars to the MythBusters Test, for being a big fan of The Clone Wars and for his w00tstock spoken word performance about dressing up as C-3PO.

We chatted with Grant about his induction into one of the coolest Star Wars groups in the galaxy — The 501st Legion — and whether this means we can expect his droids to be moonlighting for the Empire…

Was it a complete surprise?
Actually yes! You kept hinting at a surprise during WonderCon, with a specific time and place that I needed to be. If you watch the video, I don’t actually realize what’s happening until they announce it! You know, I talk on camera all day long and I’ve done tons of public speaking, but I was so surprised and overwhelmed in that moment that I feel like I was a bit tongue-tied.

If you’re now in the 501st, does that mean all robots you build will be secretly working for Darth Vader?
Ha! I think all my robots secretly work for me! Think about it: the Energizer Bunny, Geoff Peterson (the robot skeleton sidekick from The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson), my combat robot Deadblow, and certain R2 units… that would be a pretty formidable army!

Why are you proud to be part of the 501st Legion?
It’s a real honor to be inducted into a group that not only strives for accuracy in representing these characters from a saga that I love, but also does volunteer community service and is considered a part of Lucasfilm’s “extended family.”

Back to Space-Con Premiere

Pete Vilmur | March 14, 2011

Anyone who’s followed my articles on StarWars.com knows that I’ve got a soft spot for Star Wars’ first fandom – that is, those early fans who pre-empted the official costumes, books, and other merchandise in the months following A New Hope’s May ’77 release and created their own homespun papier mache masks, fanzines, bumper stickers and buttons to share their enthusiasm for the newfound faraway galaxy.

The appeal of those often clumsy, awkward early days lead me to a small premiere screening at Michaan’s Theater in Alameda this weekend, a somewhat forgotten early century movie palace nestled along the edge of San Francisco Bay near Oakland, California. A new documentary was debuting on DVD celebrating the history of Space-Con, a series of Star Trek/science fiction conventions that got their start at a Bay Area high school in 1975 and made seven more successful runs through 1980, becoming a fondly-recalled facet of Bay Area fandom thereafter.

Krewe Of Chewbacchus!?

StarWars.com Team | February 7, 2011

Heading to Mardi Gras in New Orleans this year? Be sure to party with other Star Wars fans at Krewe Of Chewbacchus!

The krewe will start at the Big Top, 1638 Clio St., and travel through the Central Business District on March 6 at around 6 p.m. Mad scientist pedicabs will carry the celebrity royalty. Brass bands playing funky renditions of science fiction theme songs (”The Imperial March” on tuba?) will set the pace.

Inspired by Zulu and then Muses, who created the much-sought-after throws of decorated coconuts and shoes, respectively, the Chewbacchus will create and then toss to the crowds furry, homemade wookiee bandleros, such as those worn by the huge, furry Star Wars creature who inspired the krewe’s name and theme.

Clone Wars Screening Recap: San Francisco

StarWars.com Team | December 15, 2010

A clone trooper checks in at Lucasfilm HQ.

Last week fans flocked to digital theaters for a very exclusive screening on the big screen of an all-new Clone Wars villain –- the monstrous Savage Opress!

The Clone Wars screenings began in Los Angeles at the Egyptian Theatre with the voice actors, director Dave Filoni and writer Katie Lucas in attendance, along with celeb Clone Wars fans.

Screenings continued in Seattle, NYC, Philly, Dallas, Chicago, Boston, Phoenix, Atlanta, Washington D.C. and San Francisco, among others.

Cast, crew and fans alike came out in full Force at Lucasfilm’s Presidio headquarters in the San Francisco to watch this epic screening of The Clone Wars introducing Savage Opress.

StarWars.com was there to report and live tweet the event. Check out the article below for quotes from Clone Wars actor Daniel Logan, CG/FX/Lighting Supervisor Joel Aron, and more!

Joel Aron has some fun with the 501st.

Why is this story arc amazing to see on a big screen?

Joel Aron: We work on it cinematically. When you’re watching it on television you’re actually seeing just a crop of what we’re doing. Every little inch of the screen we think about — the lighting, the composition, the balance, the shapes, etc. To see it on a big screen you actually feel the cinematic pulse of the show. It’s very different when you watch it at home.

Supervising Director Dave Filoni, voice actor/sound editor Matthew Wood, and CG/FX/Lighting Supervisor Joel Aron.

Why do you think fans will get a kick out of this story arc in particular?

Joel Aron: We’re introducing a character that hasn’t been seen on the show before, and it’s a direct tie to the feature films. When that happens people automatically start to associate. There’s something connecting us to Star Wars here. And you’re seeing a long thread. In the past on the show, we’ve had just little segments, but now we’re getting an entire story arc. We have three episodes that are so seamless, you don’t even realize they’re separate episodes.

Why is it important for you to watch something like this with the fans?

Joel Aron: You get to hear what they really like, and what they react to. What Dave [Filoni] and I both do is we listen to what everybody tells us and we put it back into the show. Everything that happened at Celebration V — all the conversations — the fans really drive us to do more.

“May The Force Be With Katie” Day

StarWars.com Team | December 10, 2010

Katie “Star Wars” Girl shows off her Jedi skills.

When we reported about a little girl named Katie being bullied at school liking Star Wars, we knew that our fans would rally to her cause.

Not only did Katie get hundreds of positive comments on her mom’s blog entry about the incident, we got over 500 comments (and they’re still coming) from fans on our own blog entry about why Star Wars is for everyone, not just the fellas.

We asked fans to show support of Katie liking Star Wars with the hashtag #MayTheForceBeWithKatie on Twitter, and thousands of both male and female fans did just that. #MayTheForceBeWithKatie went viral, showing that sometimes the best part of social networking sites is the positive outcome that develops from millions of fans showing a little girl why it’s cool for her to dig Jedi, stormtroopers, droids and everything else awesome from a galaxy far, far away.

The fans took it a step further and decided to turn Dec. 10, 2010 into “Support Star Wars and Geek Pride for Katie Day” on Facebook. On this day, fans (both guys and girls) vowed to wear a Star Wars shirt in support of Katie and other little girls who love Star Wars. In addition to the T-shirt support, Katie’s mom also asked that, in light of the season, those with the means donate a Star Wars toy to needy children.
