Darth Plagueis Exclusive Excerpt

In anticipation of tomorrow’s (January 10) release of Star Wars: Darth Plagueis by James Luceno, we are posting this exclusive excerpt of an exchange between Dooku (still a Jedi Knight) and Palpatine. The scene resonates as a prelude to Episode II and The Clone Wars…

Behind each of the Rotunda’s hover platform docking stations extended wedge-shaped office complexes more than half a kilometer in length, where Senators met with one another, entertained guests, and, on rare occasions, carried out the work they had been elected or appointed to perform. Some of the offices were sealed environments, in which the atmospheres of member worlds were replicated; others, especially those belonging to hive species, were staffed by hundreds of beings who performed their duties in cubicles that resembled nectarcomb cells. By comparison, Naboo’s was rather prosaic in design and adornment, and yet unrivaled in terms of the number of high-profile visitors it received.

“I’m giving thought to leaving the Order,” Master Dooku told Palpatine in the windowless room that was the Senator’s private study. “I can no longer abide the decisions of the Council, and I have to be free to speak my mind about the wretched state of the Republic.”

Palpatine didn’t reply, but thought: Finally.

The Complete Vader Author Interviews

Star Wars: The Complete Vader – a 192-page tome that explores the history, costume, merchandise and cultural impact of cinema’s most iconic villain — finally hits the street October 18th, and we’ve got the low-down on this all-things-Vader tribute directly from authors Ryder Windham and Pete Vilmur (click here for a preview of several spreads from The Complete Vader).

Who conceived The Complete Vader, and when did you begin working on it?

Ryder Windham: Kjersti Egerdahl, an associate editor at becker&mayer!, first contacted me about the project in the fall of 2007. I eventually learned that the idea for a big non-fiction book about Darth Vader came from J. W. Rinzler at Lucasfilm, who conceived it as a natural follow-up to becker&mayer!’s previous project, The Star Wars Vault by Steve Sansweet and Pete Vilmur. After talking with Kjersti, I realized how much I wanted a Darth Vader “coffee-table book” of my own, so the opportunity to write the book was quite a thrill. Because I’m not an expert on Star Wars merchandise, I knew the book needed a co-author. I was both glad and relieved when I found out Pete Vilmur had signed on.

Keep Current with Crosscurrent: Paul Kemp Drops a Dramatis Personae

Paul Kemp, author of the forthcoming Star Wars novel Crosscurrent, has just posted the dramatis personae for that book on his blog. A smattering of new names to become familiar with, along with the already known quantity of Jaden Korr, featured character from the Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy game from 2003.

Del Rey & LucasBooks announce Novels Based on Star Wars: The Clone Wars Feature Film and Animated Series

This just in from the wire:

NEW YORK, NY – June 25, 2008 – LucasBooks and Del Rey, an imprint of Ballantine Books at the Random House Publishing Group, announced today that Del Rey will publish five novels to tie-in with the upcoming Star Wars: The Clone Wars feature film, premiering on August 15, and the animated TV series that will air in fall of 2008 on Cartoon Network and TNT.

The first novel – Star Wars: The Clone Wars – is written by fan-favorite Star Wars author Karen Traviss, and will go on sale July 26, 2008. Popular science-fiction/fantasy author Karen Miller will write the second novel, to be published in December 2008. Both books will add depth, color and background to the screen stories and characters, making them must-reads for every Star Wars fan.

Dave Seeley Talks: Mindor’s Got Back

Oh sure, you’ve seen the front cover to Luke Skywalker and the Shadows of Mindor. Everyone has. Dave Seeley’s great artwork showcasing Luke Skywalker. (The book, by the way, has swapped places on the publication calendar with Jim Luceno’s Millennium Falcon. So expect Mindor in hardcover in December ‘08, while Falcon is due out in October from Del Rey Books).

Details on New Essential Atlas Book

Author Daniel Wallace revealed this week in his blog details about his upcoming book Star Wars: The Essential Atlas (working title), due out in 2008 from Del Rey.

“This book, written by myself and Jason Fry, will be the deepest look Lucasfilm has ever allowed into the geography of our favorite galaxy far, far away,” Wallace writes. “There’s lots more still to do on this project — and our draft could still undergo heavy rewrites — so take everything with a grain of salt at this early date. But I thought it would be a good idea to address some of the questions that I’ve been getting.”

Q: Is this a star charts book, or is it a new version of The Essential Guide to Planets and Moons?
A: Yes! The Atlas will combine extensive star charts/maps with planet profiles like the ones in the original EGPM (though almost certainly laid out differently).

Q: Will the book be light years better than the original EGPM?
A: Yes, lightyears. I can say that because I wrote the original, and realize that I spent way too much time recapping plots instead of actually describing planets. Hey, it was my first book.

Q: So what’s in it already?
A: We’re still at first-draft stage, so full caveats, but in broad strokes the book is equal parts cosmology, planet profiles, political structure, colonization, history, the sweep and scale of wars, and bulleted lists presenting miscellaneous items of kewlness. I mean, I like Star Trek: Star Charts, but it’s just charts. By contrast, the Atlas will hopefully feel closer in spirit to classic, meaty RPG resources like Platt’s Starport Guide or Han Solo and the Corporate Sector Sourcebook.
