Star Wars Lucha Libre Masks

StarWars.com Team | May 5, 2013

luchalibre

It’s Cinco de Mayo, but it’s also the day after May the 4th. You may still be feeling the need to celebrate Star Wars today, but don’t know how. Fear not; there is a way to make Cinco de Mayo strong with the Force.

Ever wonder what it would be like to see a tag-team wrestling match with Darth Vader and Darth Maul against Boba Fett and General Grievous? We do too, and better yet, they should be wearing Lucha Libre (Mexican wrestling) masks!

Lucha Libre masks hold special meaning for the luchadores who wear them. The masks represent animals, legendary heroes and ancient gods. The luchador never reveals his true identity by taking off his mask or he could be disqualified from a match. Even when luchadores retire, they often still wear their masks in public.

Here’s what we think Star Wars luchadores masks should look like, illustrated by Star Wars artist Randy Martinez. Print them out and wear them for fun!

Years before I started working in events at Lucasfilm, I worked in the kitchen at Skywalker Ranch. I’ve since traded a chef’s knife for a laptop, but every once in a while I get to play in the kitchen again.

To help celebrate May the 4th I was asked to create some recipes for Star Wars-themed mocktails. Each drink had to combine fun Star Wars elements into something delicious to drink. Challenge accepted!

From Origami Yoda to ART2-D2

Tom Angleberger | March 26, 2013

origamiyoda1

Sometimes people ask how I choose the Origami characters for my books. The odd thing is that they sort of choose me. Yoda was the start of the whole thing. I wasn’t sitting in front of blank computer screen wondering what to write about…I was actually folding an Origami Yoda. The book was inspired by the origami, not the other way around. And if the origami hadn’t fit on my finger like a puppet, none of it would have happened.

George Lucas’ Grand Vision Ties Together the Wonders of Art and Storytelling

Steve Sansweet | March 11, 2013

Brocure cover

Years ago I had a dream. My collection of Star Wars memorabilia kept growing. And while friends could stop by sometimes and see it, wouldn’t it be great to have some way to actually share it with a lot of other fans and collectors! It took a great deal of planning and a lot of time, but the result is Rancho Obi-Wan.

George Lucas announced his latest dream to the world last week. It’s somewhat more expansive than mine, but born of the same kinds of passions: falling in love with something, having the chance to collect what you love, and then sharing it with the world. The Lucas Cultural Arts Museum will be an institution like no other: It will concentrate on populist illustrative art that tells a story, art that goes back more than a century and a half and continues into tomorrow with the latest in the digital and cinematic arts.

Fully Operational Fandom: Building Tiny Worlds

Amy Ratcliffe | March 7, 2013

Hoth diorama header with fof-400px

One must have patience to be a Jedi, and one must have even more tenacity to be a diorama builder. Legions of Star Wars fans are devoted to creating miniature replicas of scenes from the films, and I bet most of them could teach Obi-Wan a trick or two. Barry Riddle would surely be considered a master.

Riddle’s work caught my eye a couple of weeks ago. He used 140 square feet in his living room to re-create the Battle of Hoth — complete with stationary explosions and smoke. None of the images in this post are manipulated. I was impressed by the details, the scale, and the beauty of the diorama. If someone is putting in the effort to build a scene like this in his house, he probably likes Star Wars. Just a little bit.
