Star Wars Thriller at Dragon*Con 2009

September 9, 2009

If you couldn’t make it to Dragon*Con this year, you can at least see some of the many costumed attendees in the best way possible — as they dance to Michael Jackson’s “Thriller.”

Dragon*Con: Steampunk Star Wars Costumes

September 8, 2009

We’re a big fans of the Steampunk Star Wars art by Eric Poulton, as well as the customized action figures by Sillof, so it was only a matter of time before fans created their own Steampunk Star Wars costumes to show off at thie year’s Dragon*Con.

Fans from the costuming group Outland Armour wowed Dragon*Con attendees with their costumes of Queen Amidala, Padme Amidala,
Luke Skywalker, Mara Jade, Princess Leia Organa, Slave Leia, Han Solo, Chewbacca, Darth Vader, Boba Fett, and Aurra Sing!

Laura, the Events Coordinator and Webmistress for Outland Armour, writes:

The Outland Armour crew participated in the steampunk fashion show on Friday, one of many wonderful events presented by the brand new Alternate History Track at Dragon*Con. We modeled our newly created Steampunk Star Wars designs, and they seemed to be a pretty big hit with the crowd. It was a lot of fun! All of the models and designers in the fashion show did a great job and there were some really beautiful designs from everyone involved. Excellent stuff.

Earlier on Friday, Lindsay and I were representatives for Outland Armour on the Steampunk Maker’s Panel, and then Sunday the whole crew presented our Steampunk Costuming with Outland Armour panel. Both panels went well, but we especially had a great time hanging out with the crowd and answering questions at our Sunday panel. Thanks again to everyone who came out to see us, and our apologies to anyone who didn’t get in. Hopefully the con will see fit to give the track a bigger room next year!

Dragon*Con: Love AT-AT-ctually

September 8, 2009

One of the best reasons to go to the Atlanta-based sci-fi/fantasy convention Dragon*Con is to see all the fans dress up as their favorite film, TV, gaming and comic book characters.

One of our favorites was this adorkable costume of an AT-AT by this lovely couple. Not sure if flip-flops are the best choice of footwear to stomp on Rebel scum in the snow, but I have to admit their look like their ready to have some fun.

Snapshots from the Fan Club Breakfast

July 24, 2009

This morning marked the seventh not-so-annual Fan Club Breakfast, hosted by Official Pix at the Marriott at the bleary-eyed hour of seven in the morning. This makes for a long day of activities — it’s Star Wars Day at Comic-Con International — but it’s also a great way to start. More than just eggs and sausage, it’s an informal place for fans to gather with representatives from Lucasfilm, Hasbro, Uncle Milton and more.

Here are some snapshots. For a set of pictures from the Breakfast, see this Flickr set here.

Among the guests present is James Arnold Taylor, the voice of Obi-Wan Kenobi and Plo Koon in The Clone Wars.

Supervising Director Dave Filoni.

Dave was on hand to give out raffle prizes to lucky fans, including a set of Mimobot drives.

Perhaps the most coveted prize was an extremely rare autographed George Lucas card, handed out by Doug Yates, Lucasfilm’s Vice President of Marketing, Distribution and Online.

Another highly prized  raffle item: an original 1984 Droids A-wing in excellent condition. Steve Sansweet gives away the prize.

Get a few costumed Star Wars fans together, add some dance music and watch the magic happen. Check out this video of fans dressed as Taun We, Boba Fett and Ephant Mon dancing to the Bee Gees “Stayin’ Alive” at AdventureCon 2009.

Say, Ephant Mon has some sweet moves!

Any convention that mixes R2-D2, Tesla coils, fire-breathing sculptures, a human-size mousetrap, art cars, unusual inventions and crafts is bound to have something for everyone.

Bay Area Maker Faire — May 30-31, 3009 — brought together craftsters, robot wranglers, science geeks, rocket builders, Burning Man artists, steampunks and more.

San Jose Super-Con 2009 Recap

May 26, 2009

Not all conventions are made equally. While San Diego Comic-Con International is still considered the Mother Ship of geektastic gatherings, some of the smaller conventions still hold a special place in my heart. San Jose Super-Con (held May 16-17, 2009) is one of those tiny conventions that still believe comics, not movies, are king.

Here’s a recap of what you might have seen/heard/witnessed/tweeted if you were there.

WonderCon 2009: Best Costumes

March 5, 2009

Words/Photos: Bonnie Burton

Half the fun of going to WonderCon every year in San Francisco is seeing all the costumed fans who dress up as superheroes, pirates, steampunkers, movie and video game characters and even Muppets!

We’ve already profiled our favorite Star Wars costumes this year, but here’s a list of some of the other costumes we couldn’t get enough of.

Superheroes:
It’s just not a comic book conventions without fans dressing like characters in actual comic books. Little kids and growups alike don masks and capes to wander through the convention floor looking for crime and photos ops. As an added bonus, Batman actor Adam West attended WonderCon this year and got to see all variations of the masked man he made so famous.

Watchmen:
Just in time for the March release of the Watchmen movie, fans dressed up as their favorite characters like Rorschach, Silk Spectre and Sally Jupiter. No Doctor Manhattans were spotted, but then again it takes dedication to show up to WonderCon blue and naked.

Yip Yip Martians:
If you grew up watching Sesame Street, you’ll recognize the interplanetary visitors called the Yip-Yips — nicknamed for their yip yip language. They seemed right at home yipping around WonderCon.

Report from WonderCon 2009: Lucasfilm Presentation (Part III: The Ryloth Trilogy)

February 28, 2009

You’ll excuse me if this next blog post gets a little meta and breaks a fourth wall or something. See, for better or for worse, I volunteered to go head-to-head against Steve Sansweet with the new Uncle Milton Force Trainer. It’s the much buzzed about toy that scans brainwaves to activate a fan within an acrylic tube, that then levitates a Force remote (or, ping pong ball to you terrestrial laymen) to various heights. I tried it out on Friday and, after some practice, got the hang of it.

Not nearly enough practice for the big show on Saturday, though, as I went up against a venerable Jedi Master like Sansweet. He had perfected its performance, launching the remote into the stratosphere while I apparently failed to unlearn whatever it was I had learned. My Force remote barely budged. It’s as if I had a pocket full of ysalamiri jerky or something. And if you get that, you’re as big a geek as I.

Anyway, this was really a lead-in to showcase some of the online Clone Wars comics we have been doing since the launch of the show. I introduced Tom Hodges and Katie Cook, who were in attendance in the audience, and also was able to give a sneak peek (note, correct spelling of peek – you’re welcome) into next week’s webcomic, “Curfew,” by Katie, which introduces the Twi’lek girl character of Numa.

We then segued into discussing the Ryloth Trilogy — the series of episodes that we’re now in the thick of. “Storm Over Ryloth” debuted yesterday. “Innocents of Ryloth” and “Liberty on Ryloth” are still to come.

NYCC: Best Han in Carbonite Costume Ever

February 10, 2009

If you were lucky enough to be at the Big Apple for New York Comic-Con last week, you might have posed for a few photo ops with Chewbacca, Darth Vader, Boba Fett, members of the 501st Legion and Rebel Legion and the lovely ladies dressed as Slave Leia.

However, often times it’s the hilarious fan-made costumes that make us happy to be spreading the word of the Force. This low-rent version of Han Solo in Carbonite made us short blue milk out our noses from laughing so hard. Most impressive indeed.
