Star Wars Knock-Offs of the ’70s

June 16, 2008

starteam.jpg

Brian Heiler over at toplessrobot.com recently posted a cool article about blatant ‘70s Star Wars rip-off toys – you know, those quasi-Star Wars wannabes that got you teased on the playground when trying to pass off that “S.T.A.R. Team” villain for Darth Vader or the “Star Hawk” for a Y-wing.

Check out the article here.

Well This is ‘Something New’

June 2, 2008

Rebelscum recently updated with a fascinating look back at a little-known Star Wars ad campaign staged for Panasonic back in the late ‘80s, a campaign that endowed Threepio with a butterfly net, Yoda with ear buds, Chewie with daffodils, Ewoks with leafy produce, and the Maker himself with his own wood-cut sea-faring dragon.

A great, thoroughly-researched article that includes posters, TV ads, behind the scenes imagery and more, all of which have rarely been seen here in the US. Head on over to Rebelscum to check it out.

Cool R2-D2 Collection Video

April 29, 2008

dustin.jpg

Dustin Roberts, former Star Wars Fan Club president and owner of R2D2central.com – a site devoted to all things Artoo — recently posted a cool video short showcasing his vast collection of Star Wars merch. Naturally, it’s astromech-heavy, but also a wonderful example of how to successfully showcase a collection (space-challenged collectors will be jealous!).

We asked Dustin a few questions about his collection – check out his responses and a link to the video short after the jump –

Got Props?

April 28, 2008

stormtrooper.jpg

Thought all the original screen-used props from the Star Wars and Indiana Jones movies were safely locked away at Skywalker Ranch? Well, you’d be right for 99.9-percent of them – there are, however, a few pieces that have managed to find their way into private collections, several of which are posted at yourprops.com.

While not all the items’ authenticity is guaranteed iron-clad (replicas are also showcased), it’s interesting to see what pieces have escaped the gravitational pull of the Star Wars and Indiana Jones productions and landed somewhere in the lower reaches of the collectosphere.

Click here to check out the Star Wars props or here for Indiana Jones – you can use the search bar at the left to isolate the actual props from the replicas, or simply enjoy the tour of a pretty impressive collection of movie wares.

Star Wars Collecting in Poland

April 24, 2008

polish_jedi1.jpg

While it seems Star Wars merchandise has been produced in nearly every corner of the globe, it’s not often collectors have an opportunity to explore the hobby in any depth within those areas obscured by a formidable language barrier. That’s why the recent article on Polish Star Wars collectibles posted at starwarsy.pl (via theforce.net) is such a boon for Western collectors – for the first time, we get some informative insights on the posters, books, pencil toppers and more to come from Poland, a country where information on Star Wars collectibles has always seemed murky at best.

Written by Kuba Turkiewicz with translation by Lukasz “Miagi” Mlotkowski, this fantastic article is coupled with a second piece focusing on the world of Polish bootleg Star Wars action figures – a sideline category that’s picked up a lot of momentum in recent years among diehard Kenner collectors.

You can check out the comprehensive article of Star Wars Polish collectibles here, and the follow-up on Polish action figures here.
