Director Richard Kelly Visits Skywalker

October 29, 2009

The week director Richard Kelly visited Skywalker, as well as the Lucasfilm-ILM San Francisco campus, to screen his latest film The Box, as well as indulge us as we (me included) asked uber-geeky questions about his new movie, his breakout hit Donnie Darko and about filmmaking in general.

Richard blogged about his visit on the MTV Movies Blog:

The good people of Skywalker Sound and Industrial Light & Magic hosted a screening of The Box an invited me to stay at the legendary Lucas ranch for the night and tour the facilities.

The property itself is everything a fanboy could dream and more – as an alumni of USC and an acolyte in the church of Lucas – I was speechless when I was granted access to the Sergei Eisenstein apartment, a spacious lodge with a vaulted ceiling and fireplace.

It was then on to visit the wonderful folks at ILM in San Francisco. We did a post-screening discussion on The Box (opening November 6th!) which was moderated by Kate Shaw – Director of Training and Education – who asked a series of insightful and thoughtful questions about the film.

It was an honor to be among fellow artists and technicians who appreciate the art of science-fiction and open to exploring the themes of the film. I have to say it was probably my favorite Q+A that I have ever done.

Taylor Swift the Wookiee?

October 28, 2009

While some girls would rather kiss a Wookiee, others would prefer to BE a one. Country-pop singer Taylor Swift says her favorite Halloween costume was dressing up as Chewbacca.

Taylor shared, “I think my most memorable Halloween costume was last year’s Halloween costume. My best friend Abigail and I have always been sort of anti-teeny-tiny, little costumes and so last year, Abigail and I dressed up as twin Chewbaccas, which was an actual Halloween costume.”

Taylor explained her choice in the out-there costume, saying, “It was really, really wonderful. I just am never going to forget it. There was lots of Chewbacca noises being made.

Max Records Used the Force in His Audition

October 19, 2009

Max Records, star of the movie Where the Wild Things Are, drops some Star Wars references about his audition with director Spike Jonze into his interview with Conan O’Brien on The Tonight Show.

Max: “The final audition was probably the strangest that was with Spike here in LA. During which he shot foam bullets at me which I tried to block with an umbrella like a lightsaber.”

Conan: “But that’s not in the movie!”

Max: “You don’t understand, Max has to have awesome Force powers.”

As an added part of the BBC celeb music game show Nevermind the Buzzcocks, team leaders and comedians Phill Jupitus and Noel Fielding debate a music topic after every episode. This time it’s a debate pitting super-band U2’s The Edge versus super-astromech R2-D2!

“Into the Sarlaac pit with the pair of them!”

Peter Serafinowicz Mauls Buzzcocks

October 16, 2009

While fans know actor Ray Park as Darth Maul in The Phantom Menace they may not realize that British actor/comedian Peter Serafinowicz was the voice.

On a recent episode of the British celeb music game show Nevermind the Buzzcocks, Serafinowicz gave the audience a taste of what the iconic Star Wars baddie sounds like when he talks about revenge and cheese.

Yoda: See Lee Strasberg

October 7, 2009

The Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute is world-famous as the place to learn Method Acting. Some of the greatest actors on film studied there such as Anne Bancroft, Dustin Hoffman, Montgomery Clift, James Dean, Marilyn Monroe, Julie Harris, Paul Newman and Al Pacino.

At the institute, Lee Strasberg was a respected and beloved teacher whom the actors nicknamed Yoda for his wisdom, humor, and stature.

It’s easy to see the comparisons between Yoda and Strasberg when he would tell his students: “Don’t plan. Be.”

So when reading her best-selling memoir Official Book Club Selection, we were excited to learn that comedian and actress Kathy Griffin mentioned the affectionate Jedi Master nickname in her book.

Strasberg would come to the Institute, too. We called him Yoda (his looks had a little something to do with it.)
