“No, Jeffrey! No!”

May 24, 2007

A real crowd-pleaser is the Jedi Training Academy, now underway throughout the day in Hall G. A staple of the Star Wars Weekends events in Walt Disney World, the academy consists of a seasoned Jedi instructor running young Padawan through a series of lightsaber drills, including a face-off against the evil Darth Vader. Can these kids avoid the temptation of the dark side?

Bonnie Burton Directs

The huge printed Star Wars backdrops are a great way to hone your directorial chops. Also, they’re an easy to point-to answer for when the talent asks, “What’s my motivation?”

Pre-tour of the Lucasfilm Archives at CIV

May 24, 2007

Fans who saunter into the Lucasfilm Archives Exhibit today (room 403B) will find a rare batch of models, props and costumes stretching all the way back to the formative years of the Star Wars saga. Han’s Hoth coat is here (finally putting to rest the long-debated blue coat/brown coat question) as well as the full Fett (Boba) armor, Luke’s severed Vader’s head from his Dagobah cave confrontation, a collection of Padme dresses, Vader helmets, lightsabers, and lots more.

A rare treat is the handful of early concept models fashioned by Colin Cantwell back in 1975/76, when the familiar designs we’re all used to were not yet fully realized — don’t miss the saucer-shaped landspeeder and the battleship-inspired Star Destroyer (at the time, I called the “mystery” model a possible windmill or the like — these were actually the power capacitors from the Imperial bunker in Jedi). Here’s a few rare glimpses before the show during set-up.

Sneak Peek at the Auction Treasure Trove

May 24, 2007

Collecting with a conscience just got a lot cooler thanks to the Celebration IV: Silent Auction of vintage goods to benefit Make-A-Wish. Everything from the beloved Ewok Village to rare items that even I didn’t know existed can be bid on at CIV. Lucas Licensing Archives donated boxes and boxes of rare, classic items — in fact, a few of us gasped when we spotted mint to near-mint condition treasures. Whether it was Jabba the Hutt Playdoh kits, Darth Vader Underoos, or plush Ewoks in both brown and pink varieties, there seems to be something kitschy and rare for every kind of collector.

Hitting the Ground Running: R2-C4 Print

May 23, 2007

We’re now in Los Angeles, and sitting in our inbox is a missive from Don Bies, Droid Supervisor for the prequel trilogy and generally recognized as the guy who keeps R2-D2 ticking. He sends us a rather cool looking print that should look familiar to those of who have DK’s Star Wars: Complete Visual Dictionary. Here’s the description:

“Another C-IV exclusive! Don Bies and CG Artist Mike Verta have teamed together to produce this digital high quality print of an expanded view of R2-D2. Limited to only three, it is printed on canvas and measures 27″ X 42″ and is signed by the artists. It will be on display in the R2 Builders room and will be auctioned off for charity via silent auction on Sunday. For more details, stop by the R2 builders room.”
