Walter Cronkite Visits ILM in Early 1980s Video

June 28, 2010

TheBehindtheScenes.blogspot.com recently posted a heads-up for a rare video gem from the ‘80s offering a glimpse inside the Industrial Light & Magic facility during the classic trilogy era.

Legendary newsman Walter Cronkite, who hosted a news science magazine show called “Universe” between 1979 and ’82, took cameras inside the cloistered environs of Industrial Light & Magic where it appears at least one “making of” Empire set-up was re-enacted for the benefit of Cronkite and his audience. Some great chatter between Cronkite and George Lucas, too, who personally hosted the tour.

Check it out — the audio/video quality is pretty sketchy, but the rare look inside the ILM studio during the company’s early days is worth the watch!

Lobot Speaks in the StarWars.com Soundboards

May 19, 2010

In case you missed it last Friday, the StarWars.com Soundboards updated with an entry for Lobot, the mute Cloud City operative who works behind the scenes for the scheming Lando Calrissian. Think Lobot’s a strange fit for the Soundboards? Perhaps, but we’ve asked StarWars.com’s senior designer Craig Drake, a vintage synth musician when he’s not designing cool Empire Strikes Back landing pages, a few questions about his Lobot “speak”:

So, why give Lobot a voice?
“Let’s face it, Lobot is the man!… er… man-droid… er cyborg. He’s the unsung Cloud City hero. I’m sure most Lobot fans have been curious about his silent yet effective methods over the years. This was a chance to bring them to light without unmasking too much of his mystery.”

501st Member Plays McVader

February 4, 2010

The 501st French Garrison website recently posted a bunch of images documenting the photo shoot for McDonald’s 2009 French ad campaign which featured Darth Vader sitting in a McDonald’s restaurant “beckoning” his meal (the poster from this campaign just missed being included in the Complete Vader book — read about it here).

If we read our French correctly (ok, we translated through Google), the site states that 501st member Julien Vergnes (aka SL 8106) played the role of Vader for the ad — a pretty big honor, to be sure, although we’re not sure if he, or the guy behind him, was having a better time!

Check out our recent announcement for the new US McDonald’s Star Wars campaign.

Tauntaun Taxidermy!?

January 22, 2010

It turns out that Han Solo was not alone whiling away the hours as “art work” in the halls of Jabba’s Palace…

Spotted in a reference photo is none other than a mounted tauntaun head!

Can you say “tauntaun taxidermy” three times fast? We can!

Be sure to check out this awesome fan-made Tauntaun Taxidermy craft too!

All just in time for the brand new Wampa vs Tauntaun soundboard at Starwars.com.

The Most Beautiful Footage of Rick McCallum Eating a Sausage You’ll See Today

December 22, 2009

You’ve seen the astonishingly beautiful photography of Philip Bloom. The talented cinematographer can extract exquisite high-def video images out of prosumer gear, as he recently proved with his much-blogged about visit to Skywalker Ranch. Bloom has definitely caught the eye of Lucasfilm, and in particular, producer Rick McCallum. While in Prague, Bloom shot low-light footage with a Canon 1Dmkiv that must be seen to be believed.  As a bonus, it includes a cameo appearance by McCallum, which Bloom describes:

Rick and I stuck with the cold the longest and we did some nice stuff in the main square, including the money shot…Rick eating a massive hot dog. Love that shot.

See the video on Vimeo here, and read Bloom’s behind-the-scenes blog post on his site here.
