Lightsabre UK Interviews Mary Franklin

Our pals at Lightsabre UK have profiled Lucasfilm’s very own Events Manager Goddess and Editor of Bantha Tracks Mary Franklin. If you’ve ever attended Celebration, Comic-Con, E3, Celebration Europe, DragonCon, WonderCon and any other con you’ve probably seen Mary in a blur of activity. Her love of the fans is equal to her love of Bossk — and that’s saying plenty!

Here’s an excerpt from her interview:

Which of the myriad Star Wars characters do you feel the most affinity for?
Bossk. I love Bossk. Most of the bounty hunters try to be subtle and cool and aloof, but Bossk doesn’t bother with that. He just looks like he’d rather rip your throat out now than be coy. I also love the character of Han Solo. Conflicted heroes, like Solo, and Aragorn in the LOTR movies, are the ones I find most compelling.

“I Got Your Promise: Not a Scratch.”

Why would the Official Star Wars Blog report about a high-speed chase in Poughkeepsie that ended in a crash? Well, check out the name of the “ol’ Smoothie” that came to a screeching halt.

A City of Poughkeepsie man was arrested Thursday after leading police on a high-speed chase through the city, which came to an end on the lawns of two Washington Street homes.

Officer Garth Mason was on Market Street at 6:37 p.m. when he saw a car, operated by Landocalrissan Butler, 27, of Winnikee Avenue, speeding and moving into the officer’s lane, almost striking his car, said Deputy Chief Tom Ghee.

Han Solo is Highly Effective

Io9.com takes a look at their favorite spaceship captains from Serenity, “Battlestar Galactica,” “Star Trek,” “Futurama,” and Star Wars for leadership lessons worth following.

5. Just because you have a crappy ship doesn’t mean you’re a loser. Everyone knows that Han Solo, captain of the Millennium Falcon from Star Wars, is piloting a souped-up bucket. And yet his seemingly-crappy ship is probably the very best thing for helping out a group of covert resistance fighters like Obi-Wan and Luke. Plus, he knows his ship so well that he can totally slam those stormtroopers in their McFighters. Lesson learned? Every crappy PC is a lean, mean Linux box waiting to be born. Oh, and in case that didn’t make sense: It’s not the tools; it’s what you do with them.

Romney’s Jedi Mind Trick

You didn’t seriously think we’d get past Super Tuesday without some sort of political headline making its way across this blog, did you? The New York Times reports on Republican Mitt Romney’s campaign, and the final paragraphs illustrates a candidate fishing for the all-important Star Wars fan vote.

Mr. Romney has been making more of an effort to cultivate the news media as part of his refashioned candidacy. When he sauntered back onto a flight on Saturday, he broke the ice with an unusual remark.

“What did they say in ‘Star Wars?’ ” he asked. “What’s that line? ‘There’s nothing happening here. These droids aren’t the droids you’re looking for.’ ”

Eric Fehrnstrom, his traveling press secretary, said it had actually been rendered: “These are not the droids you are looking for.”

“These are not the droids you’re looking for,” Mr. Romney said. “Sorry.”

Actually, it’s “aren’t.” Fanboy points off for inaccuracy.

“Luke Arm” Prosthesis

Dean Kamen’s “Luke arm” — a prosthesis named for the remarkably lifelike prosthetic worn by Luke Skywalker in Star Wars – came to the end of its two-year funding last month. Its fate now rests in the hands of the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), which funded the project. If DARPA gives the project the green light — and some greenbacks — the state-of-the-art bionic arm will go into clinical trials. If all goes well, and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration gives its approval, returning veterans could be wearing the new artificial limb by next year.

Droid Army Approaching…

WIRED updated recently with a story on an advanced weapons development program of the U.S. military that is working on, yep, battle droids. Not the spindly, squawk-talking variety; these droids are more ED-209 than Baktoid B-1s:

The Navy’s MDARS-E is an armed robot that can track anything that moves. Told that I was the target, the unmanned vehicle trained its guns on me and ordered, “Stay where you are,” in an intimidating robot voice. And yes, it was frightening.

The talkback is remarkably critical, and while I won’t wade into their political or ideological waters, I will say I’m deeply disappointed that no one pointed out the obvious resemblance between the MDARS-E, seen below:

Loch Ness Hologram?

Looks like Princess Leia isn’t the only hologram in the galaxy. To promote the upcoming movie The Water Horse: Legend of the Deep, a Loch Ness hologram was let loose to stun nighttime visitors to Tokyo Bay. Using a large water screen and timed fountains, it almost looks as though a ghostly Nessie comes up from the watery depths to roar hello!
