Everyone has at least one friend who has seen parts of the Star Wars original trilogy but can’t quite tell you every plot point in order. Joe Nicolosi recorded his friend Amanda as she retells the story from the tiny amount she’s seen with hilarious results. Starwars.com chats with Joe about why he decided to illustrate his friend’s retelling of Star Wars.
What made you decide to record your friend Amanda about her ideas of what happened in the Star Wars trilogy and then illustrate it in video form?
Amanda seemed very confident in her knowledge of the Star Wars saga despite never having watched any of the Star Wars films. That was the first good sign. When we sat down to watch them, she started telling me what she thought the plots were going to be, so I told her to hold steady while I went to get my voice recorder. Aside from watching the original trilogy in a single sitting, that was the best decision I made all day.
What was the funniest part of the retold story for you?
The bit where she thought that Chewbacca was a mutated Ewok is the highlight for me. It’s the farthest thing from accurate in the whole video, and it implies that she’s given the subject some real thought. Like she had seen pictures of both and added them up together in her own mind and created this backstory of Chewbacca being ostracized from his own race and then guilted into helping the Ewoks. That’s just good drama.

If you’re anything like me, you need spinal photos of sauropoda on a weekly basis. May I suggest you try out the blog, Sauropod Vertebra Picture of the Week. For the past two weeks, they’ve shone their precisely calibrated spotlight on two Star Wars critters that meet their demanding criteria: krayt dragons and rontos.

Thank you, Internet!

For the next several weeks MTV.com will be fully exploring the toughest of the tough, all in the name of crowning the Greatest Badass of All Time. Through lists, your votes and analysis, they’ll whittle down the contenders, leading up to the big announcement at New York’s upcoming Comic-Con. As usual, Boba Fett, Indiana Jones, Han Solo and Darth Vader make the list.
EXCERPT:
Boba Fett: A one-man band of badassness, this mysterious Star Wars bounty hunter wasn’t so much about what we saw him do, as the damage he had the potential to inflict. A carbine rifle, a rocket pack, a grenade launcher, armed-to-the-gills wrist gauntlets and so much more, all crammed into a suit of Mandalorian armor that makes Captain America’s shield look like Silly Putty. Will George Lucas’ repeated need to demystify Fett (the prequels, the special editions) come back to haunt Han Solo’s hunter? Or will he return to his ’80s heyday?
Indiana Jones, Han Solo, Rick Deckard: It’s the ultimate Harrison Ford face-off, and since our survey will also include the ’90s, we’ll throw Jack Ryan into the mix later. When Reaganomics reigned, however, it was Ford’s characters from Blade Runner and the Star Wars and Indiana Jones films that gave us hope for a better, more badass existence. Decades later, we now know that Han dances with Ewoks, Deckard was likely a replicant, and Indy was escaping nuclear bombs in refrigerators well into his 60s. Will such blemishes hinder their badass campaigns?

What do lightsabers, catapults, Mecha, Kung Fu, jet packs, time travel, Taco Bell and Christopher Walken have in common? They’re all on the Periodic Table of Awesoments which is chock full of the geeky things we love.
Modern day awesominers know there are actually 118 fundamental “awesoments” that compose all good things. The Periodic table of Awesoments can be a very useful tool. It’s designed to show the relationships between awesoments, and often one can even predict how awesoments interact simply by their positions on the table.

As Thanksgiving Day approaches and you shudder to think about what family debate topic will inevitably bubble up as you stuff yourself with mashed potatoes and pie, at least you can feel comforted to know your dad won’t blow up your home planet or chop off your hand.
io9.com takes a look at the worst dysfunctional families in science fiction, with of course the Skywalkers making the list.
The Skywalkers (Star Wars): The Skywalkers are more or less the gold standard for family dysfunction. Putting aside that twins Luke and Leia have the hots for one another, Papa Vader chopped off Luke’s hand, nearly killed him, and annihilated Leia’s entire home planet. Makes those family dinners pretty awkward.
Adding Han Solo’s DNA to the family tree doesn’t improve matters, as his Force-sensitive offspring Jaina and Jacen just end up battling to the death.

Finally, a Star Wars fan film worthy of Dashiell Hammett. If you like hard-boiled detective movies like the Maltese Falcon, then you’ll appreciate this fan film-noir featuring Ben Kenobi as the Private Ete… er Jedeye actually. Lots of witty fast-talking dialog and one-liners and filmed in black and white, of course.
