Ever wonder how much energy it takes to run the laser on the Death Star? Now you don’t have to wonder thanks to the eggheads at Science Blog.
For the earth, it works out to around 2.2 x 1032 joules. That’s a preposterously huge amount of energy! It’s a solid week of the sun’s entire power output. Dumping it in about a single second, as required to blow up Alderaan, is a very, very impressive feat. Doubly so when you take into account the fact that the binding energy is just enough to dissociate the planet into a diffuse cloud. If you want to actually blow the thing up into pieces flying out at many times escape velocity, you need much more energy.

Latimes.com reports the winners of Guac Bowl 2009 today, an annual event that attracts entries from guacamole aficionadoes. While “He’s No Guac to Me Dead” didn’t take this year’s Best Presentation Trophy (that went to an entry titled “Ms. Guac Man”), we think Rob Saccenti’s Han-in-carbonite creation is definitely double-dip-worthy.
From the story:
Saccenti once again wowed spectators with “He’s No Guac to Me Dead,” a life-size replica of Han Solo encased in carbonite and guacamole, but the only trophy his Guac Solo came close to winning was the Icarus Award.

When we first read about TiltShiftMaker.com on BoingBoing.net we were so impressed with how easy it was to turn any photo of a real-life scene into what appears to be a toy diorama. Living, breathing 501st members look like custom action figures, the Lucasfilm campus looks like a model, and crowds at conventions like Celebration IV and Celebration Europe look like intricate dioramas.

We’re not exactly sure if this is an officially-licensed Presidential action figure or not, but the fact that it’s posed with none other than Darth Vader makes it too irresistible — not to mention timely — not to mention here. Lucas must have been on to something when he singled out Obama as a modern-day hero-in-the-making last June.

While promoting her new horror film My Bloody Valentine 3-D, actress Jaime King is quick to point out to the press that she’s not only a real geek, but she’s a big Star Wars fan as well. Here’s an excerpt from a recent interview she gave FEAR.net.
I heard you are a Star Wars geek.
I am. I am actually doing the new Clone Wars animated series right now. I’m excited about that.Which voice are you?
I can’t tell you yet, but I play a few voices. I harassed [Clone Wars director] Dave Filoni until he gave me a part. I sent him emails, and I followed him around Comic-Con saying “Hire me. Hire me. Hire me. Hire me.”You have been to Skywalker Ranch, right?
Yes, I have. That was the best. I have gone a few times – every excuse I can find to go there, I use. And then I cry when I have to go. It’s utopia for me. The idea of being out in nature, then having all these guys there, doing what they do creatively… being in that environment…. I feel like George Lucas has created something so universal, that speaks everyone’s language, that transcends time and age. It’s something everyone can relate to. I just think George Lucas is awesome.
