io9.com recently posted a nifty set of crafted photos that depict an imaginary 20th century filled with various examples of Star Wars hardware — astromechs in World War I bi-planes, scout walkers storming a World War II beachhead, TIE bombers bombarding a seaborne destroyer and more. Here’s the description from io9:
Part-Star Wars homage, part-alternate history, If Star Wars Was Real retells the history of the 20th century with some added players, offering up a Photoshopped-fantasia of nerditry and “What If”s.
Check out the images at io9.com.

For those of you who can’t get enough of your LEGO Star Wars sets, here’s a fun little video from Toys ‘R Us to take you all the way to Denmark to see the LEGO offices (with special guests!) as well as interviews with LEGO staffers and designers! Our favorite tidbit from the video? We find out that LEGO supplied Admiral Ackbar with his own tiny coffee mug!
This fun and informative video from LEGO Club TV entitled “Behind the Bricks” takes you to Billund, Denmark, the home of the LEGO design lab and the birthplace of LEGO itself. It was shot after completion of online voting by fans of LEGO and Star Wars that determined which Star Wars movie scene would be transformed into an exclusive Toys ‘R Us LEGO Star Wars set.
LEGO designer Jens Kronfold Frederiksen discusses the process of making the hugely popular LEGO Star Wars sets and other LEGO toys and Mini Figures. This interview is amazing not only for its content but for all the classic and current LEGO Star Wars sets that are displayed, including a vintage LEGO Star Wars Imperial Destroyer, LEGO Star Wars Millennium Falcon and tons of other LEGO Star Wars sets we would love to get our hands on!

Actor Nathan Fillion is one of those actors who makes everything he touches awesome. He gave us the heebie jeebies as the evil preacher Caleb in the last epic season of Buffy The Vampire Slayer. He gave Han Solo a (parsec) run for his money as one of the hottest, most sarcastic heartthrobs in the galaxy as Captain Malcolm Reynolds on Firefly and Serenity. He made us laugh as the egostical and dubious superhero Captain Hammer in Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog.
So when Fillion tells you to do something, you better listen up. This week, on Twitter, Fillion reminded his followers to head over to Atom to vote for their favorite Star Wars fan film:

Be sure to vote for your favorite flick to win the Audience Choice Award, which will be presented in a lavish ceremony at Comic-Con on July 24! Voting closes on July 10, noon PST!

(Photo and Chipmunk Wrangling by Chris McVeigh)
Here’s a new photo from our favorite chipmunk wrangler and photographer Chris McVeigh! This time we see his live chipmunk model Molly hanging out with Han Solo on video as well! This must have been way before Han crossed paths with Chewbacca.
McVeigh writes:
Molly — like any other chipmunks I’ve worked with — is highly motivated. Once she knows that there are almonds available, she will make trip after to trip until either she gets tired or I run out of almonds.
This video shows you just how fast this process can be. I have only eight seconds (or so) to take pictures while she collects the almonds and stores them in her cheeks. Getting the focus and depth of field just right is always a challenge, and to make sure I get the shot I want I will usually shoot multiple times with different F-stops and ISOs.
Originally, I wanted to have her emerging from the Millennium Falcon, but as robust as the new toy is, the ramp is still too small to accommodate a fat little chipmunk.

Frequent starwars.com contributor Gus Lopez recently posted some captivating photos of a trip to the Star Wars filming sites in Tunisia, including the Skywalker homestead, Mos Eisley environs, and Obi-Wan’s house, among others. What makes these so compelling is how Gus has matched up the original screenshot from A New Hope with the new images — head on over and take a look! (Incidentally, The National recently shared another fan’s experience of several of the Star Wars locales in Tunisia as well).
While checking out Gus’ photostreams, you also may want to check out a couple very cool items he’s got showcased in another image series — a 1979 cast and crew goblet issued by the Finse hotel that housed the production for The Empire Strikes Back, and an actual Hoth Rebel headpiece prop (wow!).

Just in time for summer, here’s a nice selection of Star Wars and surfing connections. I have to admit the airbrushed Star Wars art on surfboards is all kinds of rad. I’m beginning to think that the teachings of the Force aid with finding the perfect wave.

Not all headlines about George Lucas are about the filmmaker George Lucas. When looking at the latest news today, we were very interested in a story about another George Lucas who was recently appointed the next Archbishop of Omaha, Nebraska.
At a news conference, the 59-year-old Archbishop George J. Lucas thanked Pope Benedict XVI for naming him to the position and called the new responsibilities “humbling” and a “privilege.” Archbishop Lucas, who shares his name with Star Wars director George Lucas, told a reporter that he had resisted the temptation to end Mass by saying, “May the Force be with you.”

According to the CG Society’s official website, legendary Star Wars concept artist Ralph McQuarrie has been awarded the distinction of “EXPOSÉ 7 Grand Master” by the group.
“The CGSociety is the most respected and accessible global organization for creative digital artists,” reads the group’s site. “The CGS supports artists at every level by offering a range of services to connect, inform, educate and promote, by celebrating achievement, excellence and innovation in all aspects of digital art.”
Fitting, then, that such an esteemed group of artists would honor McQuarrie’s work and career with such a prestigious award. Most Star Wars fans would agree that it is certainly well-deserved!
Head on over to the CG Society’s website for the award announcement, interview, and a great look back at McQuarrie’s spectacular career.
