Jabba the Hutt Costume Test Run

There’s a variety of perks that come with working at Lucasfilm. I get to write all day about Wookiees, clone troopers, bounty hunters and Jedi for Starwars.com. I interview celebrities about their love for droids and Sith Lords. I attend conventions to report on the latest Star Wars news and hang out with our awesome fans. I even make Yoda puppets at my desk.

But this is the first time I’ve ever dressed up as Jabba the Hutt.

Because StarWarsShop.com is in our office as well I always get to see the cool stuff we sell online before it gets written up. So when we got the new Jabba the Hutt costume from Rubies, I couldn’t resist trying it on.

Baby Princess Leia Velvet Painting

Black velvet paintings usually depict bullfighters in action, sad clowns and of course the one and only Elvis. But this is the first time we’ve ever seen a black velvet portrait of a baby dressed as Princess Leia.

This one-of-a-kind custom painting was done by artist Zenon Jimenez for Indignico Inc.

Dragon*Con: Steampunk Star Wars Costumes

We’re a big fans of the Steampunk Star Wars art by Eric Poulton, as well as the customized action figures by Sillof, so it was only a matter of time before fans created their own Steampunk Star Wars costumes to show off at thie year’s Dragon*Con.

Fans from the costuming group Outland Armour wowed Dragon*Con attendees with their costumes of Queen Amidala, Padme Amidala,
Luke Skywalker, Mara Jade, Princess Leia Organa, Slave Leia, Han Solo, Chewbacca, Darth Vader, Boba Fett, and Aurra Sing!

Laura, the Events Coordinator and Webmistress for Outland Armour, writes:

The Outland Armour crew participated in the steampunk fashion show on Friday, one of many wonderful events presented by the brand new Alternate History Track at Dragon*Con. We modeled our newly created Steampunk Star Wars designs, and they seemed to be a pretty big hit with the crowd. It was a lot of fun! All of the models and designers in the fashion show did a great job and there were some really beautiful designs from everyone involved. Excellent stuff.

Earlier on Friday, Lindsay and I were representatives for Outland Armour on the Steampunk Maker’s Panel, and then Sunday the whole crew presented our Steampunk Costuming with Outland Armour panel. Both panels went well, but we especially had a great time hanging out with the crowd and answering questions at our Sunday panel. Thanks again to everyone who came out to see us, and our apologies to anyone who didn’t get in. Hopefully the con will see fit to give the track a bigger room next year!

Dragon*Con: Love AT-AT-ctually

One of the best reasons to go to the Atlanta-based sci-fi/fantasy convention Dragon*Con is to see all the fans dress up as their favorite film, TV, gaming and comic book characters.

One of our favorites was this adorkable costume of an AT-AT by this lovely couple. Not sure if flip-flops are the best choice of footwear to stomp on Rebel scum in the snow, but I have to admit their look like their ready to have some fun.

What If Venture Bros. and Clone Wars Writers Swapped Places?

We’ve reported before about the awesome Star Wars references in the Venture Bros. animated series on Adult Swim. However, our blogger friends over at io9.com take the idea even further and ponder the idea of how much more different The Clone Wars and Venture Bros. would be if their writing staffs switched shows!

What would happen if you turned the Lucasfilm writers loose on the Venture Bros., and let the Venture staff have a crack at The Clone Wars?

The main difference between these shows, says io9 writer Graeme McMillan, is that the Venture Bros. writers are deeply bitter whereas The Clone Wars‘ writers are, at their heart, very sincere.

So maybe if the Venture Bros. writers got to take a turn writing The Clone Wars, you’d immediately have more weird pop-culture humor. But you’d also get more investigation into the bitterness that’s just under the surface of the Star Wars universe — the fact that Anakin is a jerk who’s destined to become the scourge of the galaxy.

That’s No Moon! It’s a Death Star Cake!

Why have a traditional cake when you can celebrate your birth with a symbol of something that wiped out Princess Leia’s home planet?

Our fave geektastic blogger Great White Snark finds another fab Star Wars cake and writes:

Take this “fondant and our Strawberries Chantilly flavor” Star Wars Death Star cake by the perennially-talented Rick Reichart of Cakelava Bakery, for example. This cake by far presents the best representation of the Empire’s battle station I’ve yet seen.

This Death Star birthday cake was made for Andrew, a 6-year old whose parents started a tradition of ordering a sculpted cake each year for his birthday based on what he’s into.

This year it was Star Wars. In our initial contact with the client she explained: “…having a sculpted birthday cake has been a tradition of ours that I would like to uphold – I know it’s excessive for a 6-year-old, but the cakes are so beautiful and they always represent a ’stage of life’ for our son and what he is really into that year (his cake last year was Racer X from Speedracer!)”

Utini! It’s a Jawa Cake!

We’ve seen loads of Star Wars birthday and wedding cakes, but this is the first Jawa cake worthy of screaming Utini!

From Great White Snark:

The Jawa cake comes to us courtesy of Melbourne-based cake artisan Sweet Libertine Cakes, who describes the cake thusly:

A cake for a huge Star Wars geek’s 40th. Rum and Raisin Chocolate cake, 3×6 inch cakes and 1×5 inch carved. All accents are gumpaste or fondant. “Utini!” is the only legible word said by the Jawa in Star Wars and everybody at the party knew exactly what it was. Geeks and Nerds Rule ;)
