May the 4th Be With You: A Star Wars Pun Primer

Eric Geller | April 29, 2013

Star Wars Day is one of my favorite days of the year, but not just for the obvious reasons. Sure, it’s a day when the global fan community can come together and celebrate the greatest entertainment franchise in human history. And sure, many companies offer discounts and other special offers on their Star Wars products to reward the diehard fans who are scouring the Internet for them. But the Star Wars theme is only half of what makes May the 4th so great. The other half: puns, my favorite genre of comedic humor.

The letter to Chief Justice Roberts on YouTube

You never know how you’re going to meet and make new friends through Star Wars. It could be standing in line for a week waiting for the next movie. Perhaps it’s at a big Star Wars Celebration convention. Or maybe it’s someone you’re marching next to at a 501st Legion parade. In this case, it was a viral video of a really smart and articulate 12-year-old boy reading a letter he wrote to Chief Justice of the United States John Roberts after he heard that Justice Roberts and his wife had two adopted children.

The Star Wars Feel: Storytelling Hallmarks of a Galaxy Far, Far Away

Jennifer Heddle | April 24, 2013

Some of the most popular Star Wars tales in both comics and prose fiction take place in eras or locales far removed from the stories of Episodes I-VI. The most recent example of this kind of story is Dark Horse Comics’ newest installment in the Legacy series, which takes place over 100 years after Return of the Jedi. Although a series like Legacy may not depict characters we’re immediately familiar with, it’s important that it still feel like Star Wars. But what does that mean, exactly?

Remembering the Velvet Admiral, Richard LeParmentier

Albin Johnson | April 22, 2013

This week the Star Wars community bids farewell to a much-loved friend. On April 15 Richard LeParmentier, Admiral Motti from A New Hope, became one with the Force. To anyone who attended conventions Richard was the upbeat and always-friendly celebrity who was ready with a smile and a conversation. It didn’t matter who you were, the admiral always made time for the fans.

Make-A-Wish Rebel: Portrait of a Star Wars Fan

John "Dak" Morton | April 19, 2013

In May 1997 just after the re-releases, I attended my first Star Wars convention, reuniting with my fellow actors for the first time in 18 years. The event was in Hackensack, New Jersey, just across the Hudson from New York City and the Twin Towers. In the nineties, I donated all my proceeds for children’s charities, and at the Hackensack show, I raised money for the Make-A-Wish Foundation, the non-profit that fulfills the wishes of children under 18 with life-threatening illnesses. At my table, the Make-A-Wish representative who would sit with me to handle the cash transactions through the weekend told me the convention had sponsored a dedicated young fan from Scappoose, Oregon, a bedroom community just northwest of Portland. He was there with his best friend, his brother, and his parents.

An 18-year-old Ben Fitzgerald arrived in front of my table driving his hot rod landspeeder: a high-tech, Swedish wheelchair. His third upgrade.
