Some fans waited in line for 6 hours. And even though the theater reached capacity an hour before the panel, hordes of people waited outside with one hope: to see Mark Hamill. I’ve never seen Mark Hamill in person. I’ve watched him hundreds of times in the Star Wars films, I’ve hung his photos on my wall, and as a kid I hoped to one day marry him. So after years of wishing and daydreaming, I rushed into the theater, plopped down into a seat, and prepared myself to see Luke Skywalker in person.
Throughout the six Star Wars films there has been a constant, and that person is Anthony Daniels, the actor who portrayed C-3PO. On day two of Star Wars Celebration Mr. Daniels did his “An Hour with Anthony Daniels” show. I call it a show and not a panel because that is exactly what it was, an amazing show. I had the privilege to see him host Star Wars in Concert but that was a scripted performance. When you give Anthony Daniels a microphone and a giant crowd with no script, it is a whole different type of show.
Dave Filoni promised he would bring the big guns for Star Wars: The Clone Wars at Celebration VI, and he wasn’t kidding. I was thrilled when he announced the season five premiere would be screened at Celebration. I was excited to see the new episode, sure, but I also knew it would mean watching the series on the big screen. It’s the best way to experience the show. The animation looks beautiful on my television at home, but it’s just nothing compared to seeing it in huge, glorious detail. The episodes play like movies anyways; it’s perfect. And holy Ewoks, did the premiere deliver on all counts.
This morning’s Del Rey panel was my very first Star Wars Celebration panel ever, but I wasn’t too nervous since I was up on stage with people much more talented and expressive than me: authors Aaron Allston, Troy Denning, James Luceno, Drew Karpyshyn, and Timothy Zahn; Del Rey Editor-at-Large Shelly Shapiro; and our esteemed moderator, Pablo Hidalgo. So let’s get to what was discussed!
Crowds of fans poured into the Chapin Theatre. Onstage a DJ played a techno remix of AC/DC while images of the band flashed on giant screens. Before long the crowd (including myself) started clapping to the catchy beat. People jumped and waved as t-shirts were thrown into the audience. There was so much anticipation and energy in the crowd. Everyone was ready and pumped for the main act. No, this wasn’t a rock concert. It was the Super Secret Star Wars Panel!
With Star Wars Celebration VI officially underway, members of the 501st fully deployed throughout the Orange County Convention Center, bringing that extra little something that only fully dressed Imperial Stormtroopers, Sith Lords, and Officers can bring to the biggest Star Wars party yet! (more…)
Random House Audio, publisher of the Star Wars audiobooks, has set up a recording studio right on the convention floor for Star Wars Celebration VI this week, inviting fans to come by their booth and record excerpts from Timothy Zahn’s HEIR TO THE EMPIRE. The first day brought a steady stream of readers, with the most popular choice being a scene featuring Obi Wan and Luke, and some excellent interpretations, including this Sith at the mic!
